Ric was reading a thread about growing Potatoes in plastic tubs. He said it was a pretty long thread and may have been part of an on going multi-part thread. He didn't mark it and we haven't found it. Anyone out there know what thread I'm talking about? Holly

Growing potatoes in a garbage can?

Cross posted. . .glad you found it! I had good luck with that method, until we left on vacation for two weeks, and the neighbor that was watering our garden forgot about the taters in an August heat wave. At least we had lots of very tasty baby potatoes! I'm definitely game to try it again this year!

Thanks Angie, We had grown them in tire stacks many years ago and that worked pretty well. It's done a little differently than this is. Ric thought he would give it a try. Last summer I went back to the old tire stack method to grow my extra Ornamental Sweet Potatoes in hopes to get a lot of potatoes to save as starters for this year. Unfortunately the Ground Hog got all the plants instead.
I'd like to try sweet potatoes someday. Dave's Garden has been really good for me, and really bad for my checkbook! LOL I keep finding all these wonderful things I have to try, so just in the year since I joined, I tried growing cukes, spinach, strawberries, garlic, dill, and asparagus for the first time. So far they've all been a success except the asparagus, and I think that had more to do with the fact that they were on end-of-season clearance and were puny and shriveled than anything!
Do you grow sweet potatoes the same way you grow Irish potatoes? I know you have to start them differently (I keep seeing the term 'slips' tossed around), but other than that, I'm clueless.
Sorry about the groundhog! My varmints are smaller, more like voles and moles. We do get the occasional raccoon and rabbits, but they've been fewer since we got a lively little beagle. I'm just afraid she'll tangle with a 'coon some day, not realizing that they are feistier than our tetchy house cat!
