First sprout of the unknown Yellow Chinese Evening Glory. This is very teeny, so the photo isn't very good because I don't have a macro camera.

How exciting, I have also received my seeds and will sow in the next couple of days, will be interesting to see how they develop.

Birmingham, United Kingdom

I believe it is a Merremia vitifolia ssp I am in England and correspond with Prof. Richard (Dick) Brummit the World's Leading Morning Glory Specialist (next to David Austin in Florida) I will get him to identify it, I have to keep pestering Dick (with his permission) he is a busy man and not often at Kew.

Hi Rareseedman,

To my knowledge, this MG has never been ID'd
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6272390

This is Merremia Vitifolia
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6326093

Merremia Vitifolia was identified by Ron 'RON_CONVOLVULACEAE' a few years ago. He has also informed the China site of the correct name and they have yet to update their site.

See Ron's post here
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6293519

I'm not sure if Ron has an ID on the 1st photo above [The Evening Bloomer]
If your friend Prof. Richard (Dick) Brummit has any input we would love to hear it.
Might be pretty hard for him to ID without the major parts of the plant, but with so many growing it out now, maybe those are available now.

Thanks for sharing

Emma

Good time to post some new photos of my vine. No bloom buds yet, but some substantial growth.

A closer view.

You can see this droplet of nectar at the stem/branch joint. I could see several of these nectaries on this vine. I was surprised to see it on the vine stem instead of inside a bloom or bud. Fascinating!

I will have some cotyledon photographs to share next week of Mia's eBay offering, and if memory serves me correctly, also the 2 offerings of Sweeky Buffalo, the Thai vendor. I am very happy to have these to compare and contrast, because I tried a new potting medium which was too stiff for the seedlings to push through. I was able to save one seedling of Mia's. Live and learn.

mine is up, too dark to take pics.. they look kinda reddish tho..

Here is Mia's (ebayer Smartseeds) Chinese MG cotyledons. The seedling seems quite strong and am hopeful it will grow out to show the flowers.

Here is a view of Ian's (ebayer Squeeky Buffalo) Yellow Chinese MG cotyledons. The seed leaves are certainly different shaped from the MG I got from the Smartseeds purchase, and I am enjoying their deep green color.

New growth at the top of the vine. Leaves look a little rough ... I hope it makes it.

looks like it is trying real hard.. I don't like spider mites, esp if that is what they do.. poor plant.. can't you soap them away?
I have no clue what you can and can't do with morning glories..mine look like this:

Colin, I have some of those up.. they look just like yours, too.. different than the Xiongs I have in a pot, they are on the north fence, and next to SOH.. aren't those the ones we all got from that ebay source> ?

yes Debra i think most people got them from smartseeds... but they where also available from squeeky buffalo in thailand...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ahhh.. i missed that one then..

i'm Sorry you missed out Debra...i have a few seeds left if you'd like some....

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

nawww.. I will wait until some other species comes around to trade with ya.. I am pretty much chinesed out LOL

Here is the first seed leaf of Chinese Evening Glory (yellow flower) that grew from a seed that came from eBay seller Smartseeds. It's taking its own sweet time of growing onward and outward.

Here is the first seed leaf of Chinese Morning Glory (yellow flower) that grew from a seed that came from eBay seller Squeeky-Buffalo. Quite different from the Smartseeds plant.

Joseph - Looks nice and healthy! Mine started off really slow too. But seemed to gain momentum after the 8th leaf. Mine is hanging in there. I really want to see a bloom or two. I guess I need to break out the MiracleGro Bloom Booster when I water it tomorrow ... ;-)

The first photo you posted above from smartseed, I have been told is the real deal ...

hey Joseph they look really good... i haven't sown any of the sqeeky buffalo sourced seeds yet... i'll do it now... i love a good mystery :-)

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

I am anxiously waiting to see flowers. Also, I can read Vietnamese if you want to post the Vietnamese website. I also have a cousin and a friend that could speak Chinese. My cousin will be in Atlanta in July, so I can ask her for hep if needed.

Can I still get these seeds anywhere?

Squeeky Buffalo still has his seeds for sale on eBay. I think Smartseeds is out of the seeds at present.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nicole - The Yellow Chinese MG seeds were actually very difficult to locate. It just so happened that someone on ebay was selling them. I hadn't seen them for sale before that nor since.

If I can get mine to bloom and produce seeds, I will of course share the seeds! Keep your fingers crossed!

Also thanks for offering up your help to do translations! :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - Is Squeeky Buffalo's seeds/cultivar different than the one originally spotlighted on this thread?

The first photo came from Smartseeds' ebay listing.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Joseph - The reason I asked, is because I looked at your seedling photos from the two different seed sellers and they do not appear to be the same cultivar. The first true leaves look completely different. It will be really interesting to see what these vines produce in the way of blooms! :-) I hope at least one of us gets blooms and seeds! :-)

I'll wait for Becky. I'm calling my mother tonight to see if she might be able to find some from her Vietnamese friends or relatives.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Keep your fingers and toes crossed, Nicole! :-)

LOL! I had a chance to look at that Vietnamese website. It's a link for a group of students in the southern region of Vietnam. There is a second page of that website and some of them are growing on a mountain. The one on the first page where it's growing on a roof, it's in a cooler climate region of Vietnam. It's an old post, back in 2006, so I don't know if a student would respond if I post something.

Mom is not home, I am anxious to talk to her about it. But I am keeping my fingers and toes cross that Becky gets flowers on hers.
