Omega 3 eggs

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

I saw an ad on Craig's List yesterday for Omega 3 eggs.
I decided to investigate, this is what I found. I will not be deceiving my customers.

Isnt that something!!! Deception is right!!!! Thanks Bernie ;)

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

We have indeed had discussions about the difference in free-range bird's eggs and store bought (caged) eggs. We all mostly agree that the free range and fresh eggs are better. I am not sure how omega 3 comes into play with eggs. I eat salmon for my omega 3. I am not sure about any of it. Even after reading the claims of both. I am just happy to eat my own eggs that are fresh and not in a grocery store for weeks on end. I don’t always trust reports either way, because often times there are other reports that contradict them almost immediately all claiming to have scientific proof one way or the other. So, I will stick with my own fresh eggs that may or may not contain omega 3. ;) Thanks for your reports as well ZZ. (Now I am really confused. hehehe it’s not that hard to do.)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Really, it's a huge question.. but I just don't agree with that reporter at all.. It's not misleading.. it's in there.. They don't make huge claims that the eggs have as much Omega as Salmon or anything..
My take on the Omega Eggs thing is... If you keep birds separate, feed them special feed, (that contains natural Omega 3) then yes, by all means it's fine to ask more for them, and I see nothing wrong with saying it's in the eggs! Since when is it dangerous to eat eggs?

I am going to be my own experiment. My cholesterol was not great.. it was 226 last year. I've been eating eggs like they are goin out of style for this last year since I got chickens.. LOL Now I am anxious to get my cholesterol checked to see if it's skyrocketed as that reporter (and some people) claim... some say it's dangerous, some say it's not.. I tend to believe it's not.

I've searched and searched to find a true answer to the cholesterol in eggs and the safety of eating them.. Nothing has convinced me either way.. My best answer so far is my mom who is 95 and nearly lives on boiled eggs.. especially since we have fresh eggs now.. (she has no teeth) She loves them! If I make it to 95.. it will be mostly cause I follow her lead.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I have not died from eating eggs yet either. Now my baccon habbit on the other hand... :0
It will be interesting to see how your cholesterol is when you go in next. Keep us posted oh guinea pig of DG. hehehe ;)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Me too..

I also like Pork Steak.. I'm bad.. :(

Let's not talk about Hot Links or Chorizo.. LOL

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh no! I will start to get hungry again!!! hehehe We just processed a pig and got some of the best meat ever! mmmmmmm good!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Drooooooooooool...bacon, pork steak, hot links....

I quit eating meat (for the most part...Like I'm not giving up Corn Beef & Cabbage next week or that Prime Rib on Christmas) because I wanted to lose some weight. I've lost 65lbs in a year.

IT was wine or meat.... no brainer.

So... consequently I eat a LOT of eggs and I'm doing fine!

Ginger

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Thats good news. My cholesterol has been fine as well.

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Oh.. and sometimes I eat eggs pickled in wine :) or balsamic vinegar or both.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Deviled eggs, scrambled eggs & ham, easy over, fried egg sandwich, boiled eggs, potato patties, egg gravy, (I haven't had it in years), omelets with veggies & cheese, how many other ways!
Oh, shoot, I forgot brownies & chocolate cake made with fresh eggs.
How do people get by with only a dozen a week ?
I have one customer who buys 10 dozen every 2 weeks. Wish I had more like them.

Our pullets are starting to go full tilt. About 50% right now. I can't wait until I can get them outside. It will brighten up the yolks for sure.

Oh, by the way, we raise all our veggies & chickens substanable. (Spelling).
I do use organic straw for part of the litter & in the nest boxes. A friend farms organic & has lots of straw. No straw needed in all the pig confinement builds around here. I try to buy all my pork from a free range pig farmer. Meat has so much better flavor.
Pork from confinement barns smells like the manure.

Thanks for all the input to my thread.

It was a good topic Bernie..

Howdy girlS!

Ginger

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, it was a great topic Bernie! I would like to know the bottom line on eggs and cholesterol..

Years ago there was a lot of talk about the danger of eggs because of the cholesterol.. then there was that commercial "The incredible Edible Egg" in attempts to correct the damage done to the popularity of eggs... I am wondering what the final final was..

This thread keeps my curiosity alive.. :) I appreciate it!

I also want to be informed, so I can pass on the FACTS to my customers, if I ever sell eggs..

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Now we are getting messages on the benefits of high fructose corn syrup...LOL

One's cholesterol level has a lot more to do with your genetics than what you eat.

The Framingham Heart Study (followed a large number of people in the town of Framingham MA for many many years) also found no real correlation between cholesterol levels and the incidence of heart disease, especially in people over 50. It seems that as people age, having higher cholesterol than what is considered "safe" can actually be a good thing! But you'll never hear your doctor say that. I think ZZs mom can eat whatever she wants at 95, and as many eggs as she wants! :-) As we age we need to make sure to get enough high quality protein, and eggs sure provide that.

I love this blog: http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com It's a dose of scientific reality in a crazy world. If you scroll way way down you'll find a search box on the right hand side. Try typing in "Framingham heart study cholesterol" and browse through the results.

Here's one: http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/2007/08/cat-and-email-even-scientists-can-be.html

Thank you Galles.. I don't give my own cholesterol a second thought.. but I am curious about eggs and cholesterol.. Doctors for advice? OH NO.. LOL My mom never listened.. she was a vegetarian for 40 years, and into herbs, etc.. I rather listen to her! (go figure, a daughter listening to her mom? ) LOL

Last summer was my first "real" garden.. it was huge, fed me all summer and I canned what I couldn't eat. This year was the first year ever I never even got the sniffles.. NOTHING.. with my job and a kid in school.. that's pretty darn good.

knocking on wood..

*Sigh* and here I am at my desk eating cold Trader Joe's ratatuille from a jar.....

But..I get to go HOME tonight.....(at least that's the theory so far...)

I just went and read the original link. The "expert" cited was somebody from CSPI. Just be aware that CSPI has their own agenda which includes (among other things) getting people to fear eating any animal products, whether it be eggs, meat, or dairy. So when they say eggs are "loaded with cholesterol, which promotes heart disease" that's just another scare tactic. They don't really care about the Omega-3 claim, it was just another excuse to get their digs in about the supposed evils of eggs.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

You probably have a better chance of getting killed on the highway than by an egg.
Nobody does anything about outlawing stupid drivers, so why pick on eggs or meat.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Interesting to know. Thanks for your investigating into it. ;)

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I didn't even see that.. I just saw that eggs were "loaded with cholesterol" and that is what set me off. LOL

The media is so dangerous.. there are so many people who think that just cause it was on the news, it's fact.

Good goin Galles.. :)

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

I've about had it with the evangelical vegetarians and vegans. By and large, I think folks oughta keep their religion to themselves. }:P

I knew a guy, old bronc rider, that in his early 70's his doc said knock off the eggs, you've got high cholesterol. Now, bronc riders are sort of contrary folks, so this ol' fella went home and ate twice as many eggs (4 for breakfast), just to show that doc he didn't know his head from a hole in the ground. Sure 'nough, in 6 months when they rechecked his cholesterol, it'd come down.

And those were store bought eggs, as far as I know. I wonder if he doubled up on the bacon, too? LOL

OK..Now I'm hungry.....Going to have to stop laughing at pictures of Tim and go get some food. Think I'll offer to buy my kids breakfast so they'll bring my Granddaughter..

Last time they brought her wearing a t-shirt that said

"I'M GOING TO BE A BIG SISTER"

YIPPPPEEEEEE!!!!!

Years ago in my hometown there was a guy that ran a bunch of miles every day & claimed to eat healthy. They found him dead along the road one day. He was 43, heart attack. When your number is called, bye-bye.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Tofu and broccoli and dead anyway. Goes to show...
My dad smokes and drinks and eats... lordie, I'm not sure what... casino buffets, frozen dinners, american cheese sandwiches on white bread, eggs fried in bacon fat... for veggies I think he does mashed potatoes. He's running up on 80 now. I hope I got his genes!

LOL

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

LOL.. remember Yule Brenner? (sp)

and you're right Jay.

My great-grandpa, the one who grew dahlias....old Irishman..drank, smoked ran his BP up durring football games and lived to be 97. He last order was that we finish off all his booze at the wake over at the Catholic church because he did want his no good nephew stealing when he was gone....

There it was in the rectory hall... a table full of half empty (Us Irish always see booze bottles as half empty rather than half full..a great sadness to be sure.) booze bottles for us to polish off.

Slap me silly and call me a fool... I just got the T-shirt. DUH. %-) Congrats!

I do believe (being part Irish myself) that alcohol has a definite preservative quality. Between the vinegar in his personality and the alcohol in his bloodstream, buffered with plenty of fat, I do believe my dad will live quite a while longer yet in his half pickled state.

I'm not a big drinker, I don't eat everything with a lard layer, and I'm MUCH sweeter than my pa... yikes, I'm probably nutritionally deficient for my genetic type!

Think I'll go make me an Irish coffee and munch down a butter cookie...
Jay

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

I'm not a big drinker either...I'm only 5'2"

My dad is an 87 year old Swede in perfect health. The only vegetable he will eat is peas....and the very tips of asparagus if forced to.

I recently had a life line screening exam, checks for plaque build up in the legs, and carotid arteries, as well as around the heart. Checks for hidden aneurysm, and abdominal aneurysm. every thing came back normal and good shape. After my wife read the report, she took one look at me and said "They don't know you like I do, there's nothing normal about you." Oh did I tell you, She thinks shes funny. We eat eggs big time and I believe 99% is in the genes. Great Bernie. When It's your time "BYE-BYE. Haystack

Back sort of on topic. This is interesting:

http://www.motherearthnews.com/Relish/Free-Range-Versus-Pastured-Chicken-And-Eggs.aspx?utm_medium=email&utm_source=iPost

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Typical. The top egg carton reads, "Large Brown Eggs". I must be color blind! Look white to me.

Does "Organic" eggs also mean "Free Range" or "Pastured"? I would think you could actually feed your hens organic food in a cage house!

Usable pasture in this part of Minnesota would only be from April 15 until Sept 15. That's only 5 months. What do you do for the rest of the year ?
These people have very little common sense.

Just a few thoughts.
