2009 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds

Marlton, NJ

Congratulations Iris!!! Those are wonderful pics!

bluegrassmom, Does it have to be a book? There is plenty of info on the web. If you still want a book I can ask around for you.

In the meantime here are some sites.

Not a great shot, but I have now have proof of my first hummer. She was shy, saw me through the window turned and I took this shot and she was gone. I'm sure she will be back. Dark cloudy day, not much color in the pic.

I noticed that when my clematis bloom, That is when I first start seeing hummingbirds, I wanted to see if it would be true for this year, The clematis are opening today so I was about a day off this year as I saw the first hummer at 7:30 last night.. Pretty close though!!
A few more from today ...

bluegrass, I'll ask some hummer folks about some books for you.

great pics guys!

That little female seems to have staked out my feeder. But for the life of me I can't get her pic. She has the eyes of an eagle and any time I move toward the window, she is gone in a flash. Pics are coming. I'm pretty sure I am more stubborn than her.

reddirtretiree, That stubborness is going to really help you get your shot!

I finally got a picture of the male hummingbird today ....

Pretty Iris!

Norman, OK

A male showed up this a.m. This is the only pic I've been able to get of him. Again, almost no light and both of the birds are really spooky. Maybe this pair have this site staked out. Now I need to get another pair out back.

Thanks pelletory!

Red, maybe you could move the feeder so many feet each day until you get it around to the back, I'm sure they will follow it, I'm really suprised that they haven't found the feeder in the back yet. I have 3 feeders out and they go to all of them.

Nice ones Iris and Red...I am still waiting not so patiently for my first sound of the Humm!!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

dellrose, thanks! Do you remember when you had them last year? I remember they started to arrive when my clematis starting blooming and I wanted to see if it would be the same for this year and it was almost right on the money! They came in at exactly 7:30 pm and thats when the clematis was halfway open. ... ( clematis.."The President") ...

Beautiful bloom Iris...we don't have much blooming yet as it has been mostly cool weather with no sun...grrrrr! I checked and last year my first Hummer, Indigo Bunting, and Orchard Oriole showed up on April 18th!! I remember how excited I was...it was such a cool day and a day or two later the Baltimores showed up. Just thinking about it gets me excited and at my age that is not an easy thing to do!! LOL!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Thanks dellrose! 3 of those beauties at the same time,,WOW! I would have loved to have seen all those at the same time!! I'm hoping you get a repeat this year and hope you get pictures! I had an indigo bunting stopping by to eat a couple years ago, I have unfortunately not seen him since but am always hoping to!
5 more days till the 18!!! I still excited too, Like a kid in a candy store!! Now that candy store would go back many moons ago!! LOL!

TOO funny

LOL

Obviously these little bird thrived for millions of years before anyone was hanging out feeder for them.

On the prairies this is what they were/are dining on this time of year. Indian Paintbrush.

I've figured out that if you buy a new HB feeder, you shoot get one with perches so they will land once in awhile.

Very cute Rose!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

should only be 10 more days for me!!!!

Norman, OK

We were sitting on the patio last evening and a little male perched in a small live oak tree on the exact branch that one sat last summer while guarding his feeder. Makes me think it is probably the same bird.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

He's still here!

Very nice Rose!!

Could have sworn I had one here the last few days but no real sighting to confirm that.

Norman, OK

Still cloudy here, so not able to get a really good pic. But, I got a couple a little better of the male.
