Daily Pics Vol 190

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

I'm really enjoying everyone's photos of the birds. Thanks to all who post them!
Frank, as to your home-made mealworm feeder - before we got the one inside the cage, I took a small margerine tub and screwed it to one end of a 1x1 that I had pounded into the ground near their nest box. It was a temporary thing, for sure. I also thought about taking a small square piece of plywood, glueing a custard dish to the center of it and hanging it with small chain hooked to eyes screwed into the corners. Best of luck with your nesting pair. We have 4 eggs from our pair so far. They had three successful clutches last year.

Thank you Barb. I had thought about cutting a hole for a small glass dish(maybe a blue one) in a board then mounting that board on another solid one. Then mounting that on a metal pipe in the ground. Would head high be the right height? Do I need roost or are the board edges enough?

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

thanks for your comments.
Nice Hawk Adel.
wbbirdwoman, Grand-Falls is about 150 miles north west of Oromocto. It's a very scenic drive down, on the old highway. It's not the same anymore, since they build a doublelane HWY. But it's very nice in the fall with all the colors.
Frank, you put that bluebird house up, just in the nick of time . I had the goldfinches last year, that stole the coconut fiber from my basket. I cut up some bits of rafia string and placed it in the basket among my plants, for their nesting material.

PERTH, Australia

Love the Kite, Dinu.
Funny shot of the Grackle, Elphaba. The Inca Doves are really beautiful.
Burn you must be soooo hanging out for Spring. Nice shots.
Frank, those Bluebirds are just wonderful.

Australian Pelican from yesterday.

Edited to ask Dinu if that is a Cassia behind the Kite. If it is, which species. If it isn't, what sort of tree is it. Looks beautiful.

Thanks. That is not a Cassia in the background, but this: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/100130/ . I think I must take and post some pix to the PF there as it is the right time to shoot. The Australian Pelican is lovely.

garden_whisperer, I loved your bird bath up there. Very nice. Is it made of terra cota? BTW, who closes that door of the bird house? LOL.

Dinu

Lovely Pelican Margaret!

PERTH, Australia

Thanks Dinu. It is the same family as the Pride of Barbados, Caesalpinia Pulcherrima. Fantastic tree.

Thanks Pelle.

I'm not sure what this bird is, so I'll draw on Mrs Ed's ID skills and say "large white bird with sharp beak and long legs"

Good morning everyone! Thanks for all of the beautiful photos. They start my day off right. Burn, that is one of the cutest feeders that I've ever seen. Barb and Frank: I need to copy and paste all of this info about your Bluebirds and send it to my daughter in Huntsville, Alabama. She has her Bluebirds hanging around again. I look forward to reading all of your posts. You're a great bunch. Blessings.

Yah, that's what I'd say, Margaret.

Renton, WA

G'morn all, too many great shots to list-- the hawk is cool, the kite, the bluebirds, pelican and poll and grosbeck

Could that be some kind of egret? (don't know the range)

mine today is a friendly junco who couldn't wait till I left the feeding area yesterday.

Margaret, since it seems pretty large and has black feet, I'm guessing it's a Great Egret, though as dirt says, not sure of the range. (tho large white brid with long legs and sharp beak works, too. :) )

Wonderful pics, all!

Dinu: The Kite is amazing! Would love to see more photos of them if you get the chance.

Margaret, your photos are always such a pleasure!

Dirt the bushtit is so darn cute!! Great shot!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I have not had much..and still don't and have been having a few computer issues. Pus we had several really nice warm days so went outside and worked in the yard a bit. I scored 80 Castle retaining wall pavers in exchange for 8 homemade tamales this weekend...so I am getting an new hosta bed Mrs. Ed!!! hee hee

I seemed to have either sprained or broke my little toe yesterday...nothing they can do about it so no point in going to the Dr. for it. Just trying to stay off it as much as possible! lol

But I have popped in to look at all the great pics that you all have been posting and enjoying the very much!! :)

The crows are doing their mating talk and have seen some carrying nesting material...so spring is on the way for sure. Nuthatches seem to be pairing up and have seen lots of one feeding the other...that is just so cute!

I was on the phone yesterday afternoon when I saw the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker out on the suet. I was so happy...hadn't seen it for awhile and I am really hoping it will stick around!!

Good to see that DH's tamale lessons paid off Nanny!

nice sapsucker!

love the detail on that junco, Dirt.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Ditto on everything Nanny said minus the tamales and broken toe!! I am enjoying everyone's contributions here! I thought spring had sprung here in the Ozarks but we are back to freezing temps temporarily! Love that Sapsucker Nanny, wish ours would visit the feeders.

Grackle sighting! First of the year! (sorry no pix yet).

Las Cruces, NM

Great pictures everyone.

I really should post this one in the "most disappointing" thread because the image exposure quality is so disappointing. I've lived here in New Mexico for 25 years and this is the first time I've ever seen a roadrunner (our state bird) with its prey. It was sitting on the corner of my roof yesterday afternoon, with the sun amost directly behind it. I didn't want to miss getting a couple pictures of it; but they all came out as sillouttes. With some brightness and contrast adjustments, at least you can see what's going on ... lunch time. I'm just glad it didn't offer to share his lunch with ... LOL!

Nice picture Jane. Every time I've seen one of those it has been skeedaddling across a road too fast to photograph!

Well it wasn't long before one grackle turned into 4 or 5. They are so pretty though.

Great pics everyone!

Love the Roadrunner Jane!

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Great pics!! Love the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker...I would love to see one! I like the cow birds they seem so gentle and laid back! LOL

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Gorgeous pics all! Luvs, I like the cowbirds for the same reason. They seem to be well-mannered at the feeders here and don't stay all day and keep the other smaller birds away like the Red-winged blackbirds do. Those guys are bullies!
Mrs. Ed, gorgeous grackle.

Woodbridge, VA

Hopefully, your little toe is only sprained, not broken, Nanny. That Roadrunner picture is great, Jane. This morning, on my way home from the grocery store, I saw a Bluebird fly right in front of my car. DH needs to get his home-made Bluebird box up. Here's a photo of our lazy Downy Woodpecker. He must think that only a chosen few are able to sit and eat...not cling to the suet rack. LOL

luminous grackle, wiley's nemisis, woodcarvers and an upside down goldie. beautiful-very well done
my little contribution instead of working:(actually taking a pictureto show Mrs.Ed-- thankyou)
finally I got a picture of the flighty Parus rufescens, the Chestnut-backed Chickadee- that is
a good picture - most were tails and blurs.

Nice ones wb, dirt and Rose16!

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Jane: I think those Roadrunner shots are really good! Especially the first one.
Dirt: Never seen that type of Chickadee. Very cool.

I have no birds today, but..well..I got this new feeder a couple of weeks ago and I had a feeling it'd be real popular with the squirrels. As you can see, I was right. :)
