New baby Jacob ewe lambs

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Yesterday we drove to Nickerson, Nebraska to purchase two young Jacob lamb ewes. I think they are adorable! I have not named them yet. One has four horn buds already (Jacobs can have 2, 4 or even 6 horns).

This one has a more curly fleece - she is adorable! I can't feel the horn buds on her yet.

This one's fleece seems more dense and she has the 4 horn buds. Cute little fluffy head!
She has less black spots but she has the eye patch on the other side.

Not to be outdone in the cuteness department, Luna was doing flying leaps while I played with the lambs.

Can you tell I just couldn't stop cuddling these gals? I'm so pleased with them. They will have great fleeces as they grow up!

congrat on the cute new babies.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

How fun! ;)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Thanks! I just spent another half hour in the barn with them. They smell so wonderfully lamb-y, like fresh wool. I could just snuggle them on my lap all day long!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Luna's gonna get torqued about that!

What is the origin of Jacob's sheep? Are they fiber? Can I have one? PLEEEEASE?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

they r all adorable, congrats!! love the pics!!!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hey Livestock Lovers! Does anybody have pictures of baby sheep just a couple of days old? One of the DG writers would like one to use in an article. My lambs are too old! Somebody must have one!

Jay - Luna demands attention constantly when I am in with the lambs (they are in the same pen now). She paws at my legs when I am giving scritches and snuggles to the lambs. I swear, she really is jealous!

Catscan - believe it or not, Jacob sheep are mentioned in the Bible, so they are a very ancient breed. They are GREAT for fiber, and they are very sweet and huggable, if you can get past the potential for 4 to 6 horns! Of course you can have one! Maybe we will breed ours in a year or so!

Check out this link for interesting bits of info! http://www.albc-usa.org/cpl/jacob.html

Claire, I have several. :) How many would they like?

Ferndale, WA

Gotta tell ya mox, Your right about them being in the Bible. I know nothing about them but they are cute cute cute, and that smile on your face says it all. Congrats, Haystack.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Gallesfarm - Carrielamont is looking for them - perhaps you could dmail her one or two. She wants one with no people in it - just a baby lamb.

Haystack - thanks! I read the Bible once but it was many years ago so I don't know where they are mentioned, but I have read in a few places that they are in there. I'm glad you knew about them being in there so I don't feel like I'm spouting nonsense! They really are cute. Every time I go look at them, I'm smiling without realizing it!

I remember the sheep...it is in the Old Testament. After crafty old Laban has tricked Jacob into first marrying the wrong sister, Leah, instead of Rachel (who he loves), thus getting two unmarried daughters off his hands in one stroke, the old man tries to convince Jacob to stay by saying he can have all the spotted sheep...but then he gives the dark sheep needed to produce them to his son instead. With God's help, Jacob figures how to breed for spotted sheep using a spotted ram...and Bob's Your Uncle, establishes a large flock.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Ah Catscan, you have an impressive memory indeed! A good story! Did he get Rachel after all?

I have decided to name the one with two eye spots "Panda" but I haven't got a name for the other one yet.

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

Maybe you should name them Rachel and Leah

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I know MaryE has pics of baby lambs. It's almost lambing time for her again.

Will you get a ram to breed your ewes are will you "Rent-A-Ram"?

My friends who have a farm a few miles away are raising Jacobs sheep. They are trying to start and preserve the heritage sheep. They also make a good bit off just the wool. They have 2 other heritage breeds, but can't remember the names at the moment. When I watch their farm the ram can get a little aggressive with you. Their sheep are just starting to lamb well. I will try to get one of theirs and dmail it to you. They just had 5 over the weekend. I was there today and was holding one with the cord just drying.

Claire, Luna looks thrilled to have new playmates!! How sweet. I do love the white and black cow markings the new ones have. What a treasure you have found. I would spend my off hours in the barn too. ;)

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Cajurn - we'll probably "rent" when it comes time, but we won't breed until they are at least 18 months old.

George - I think Gallesfarm had pictures for the DG writer so I think it's all settled. That is a great picture of them though - what a group! I like preserving the heritage breeds too. Maybe your friends have Navajo-Churro sheep? They are another heritage breed badly in need of preservation.

All of pictures are awesome.... I want a few lambs so Billy can get better on his Mutton Busting... LOL and besides they are cute...

morehead, KY(Zone 6a)

Ok, I asked my friends the name of their different flocks and i know these are not spelled correctly, but will be spelled like they sound.
1. blue faced leister(my favorite)
2. tease water
3. Lincoln
4. Jacob
George
They have a matching funds program here in Kentucky since tobacco is pretty much on the way out. These sheep are pretty expensive, but agriculture dept. Helps with buying new rams and fresh stock. You just have to be willing to trade around with other breeders to keep the line strong. They had to travel to Georgia, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to get the different herds. They are are fiber sheep.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh wow, I am very envious. The Blue Faced Leicester are wonderful for spinning wool. I would love to have some of those. I don't know much about the Lincoln but I'll look them up in my book. The Teeswater is something I've been looking for, but I can't find them around here yet. They are almost like angora goats - long curly locks. They are totally cool!

Ferndale, WA

Catscan!!! I'm impressed with your story about Jacob, and your right on. You only left out how many years he had to work for those women, and yes he did end up with both of them. Fourteen years he labored for them. Not bad seeing as how I have been laboring forty five years for just one.LOL I got a great deal I might add.

Sometimes being able to see the different ones with their animals say's so much more than words. Mox you tell the whole story with your smile. I love it. Haystack.

Most of you on this forum might know that Jeanmarie AKA (Sewincircle) is my great neice. You know I have never even met her and also have never seen her. She is so precious to me and I know that she has some new showgirls. Don't you agree with me that she should at least post a pic with her and the girls so I can at least see who I am so proud of. If you should agree with me please let her know. I figure she will probably respond to your pleas. Haystack

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh wow, I didn't know that! Definitely, Sewincircle, if I can post pictures of my silly grin, you can post pics of you with a showgirl!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

I second that motion!

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Samigal, WELCOME!!! They are adorable. I can look, not touch. hehehe

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Hi Samigal! Thanks for coming by! I'm glad you like the lambs. We'll have more at the end of April, so keep your eye out for new threads on Icelandic lambs around the 27th of April.

Ferndale, WA

Hey Sewin!!! ROTFLMBO. That darn devil got the best of me. I'm sure we are closer than ever. LOL Don't you just love it. Say you do. Pic's, Pic's Pic's. I'm sorry!!! I just could not control myself. You are my sunshine you know. Haystack.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)
