Gail-- the chiritas can be cut and rooted just like streps.
March II Blooms
This is the first flower I've had on a petrocosmea, so I'm really excited. The leaves are so cool on them, I usually forget "Oh, they flower too!"
To me, the flowers on 'em aren't really that impressive--but I'm proud of this, 'cos I feel like if it made a flower, I guess that means I'm taking care of it properly.
Petrocosmea - meglingensis
There are so many pretty noids that people show. I wish we had some local nurseries that would carry Optimara violets.
Nice petrocosmea, Mermaid
Now I have to find a picture of something in bloom. I know of something on the front porch that is an aeschynanthus Holiday Bells.............be right back.
She has some hoyas wrapped around her (smiling)
Nice Pet M3! None of my leaves are rooting...must be doing something wrong
Gail,
What is the one with the variegated leaf in the bottom right corner?
My pet leaves were really S--L--O--W to produce babies--finally got ears on P. shortnin bread after 2 1/2 months but nothing on P. yumebutai --yet.
Lynn, that was a picture from last summer........don't know...........I grew 4 trays of av leaves this winter but got rid of them.........had to have room for my streps...........I shouldn't have shown the first pic I could find.....
Gran, I gave up on rooting petrocosmea leaves ! (LOL)

Gran and Gail,
Why are Pets. so difficult? Just my curiousity?
I asked about the AV because I love the pattern of the variegation. It doesn't look like typical Tommie Lou,Mosaic or Champion.
Planti...your violets are lovely and wonderful for pure enjoyment. I like Optimaras for growing in natural light.
M3, your pet flower photo is exquisite, the detail is amazing. I would like to see it framed as art.
ibrabec, you might like some of the Apache violets for pretty pink variegated ruffled leaves. Ex: Apache Freedom. This is an old pic of Laser Celebration and it had dynamite variegation but the only drawback was the flowers were droppers (not sticktite).
Gail, that plant is a dreamboat. Doesn't get any better.
How funny you should say that, Goldleaf. I just dmailed Nichole and told her to go put my name on one of the babies I had sent her way. There were lots of stickings of her and then I forgot to keep one.
Oh, I can't wait until mine gets bigger . . . that pic of yours Gail just makes my heart skip a beat!
This is the first flower I've had on a petrocosmea
Petrocosmea - meglingensis
Do you know the common name of this pet? Some of my leaves came with only the common name, like Shortinin Bread.
I think that P. meglingensis is a species name and P. Shortnin' Bread is a cultivar name either a hybrid or a plant significantly different from the described species. My P meglingensis has no cultivar attached either.
A while back there was a discussion about sinn. "Bright Eyes" and that it was sometimes difficult to get seed from it. I mentioned that mine had seed pods, and someone (Goldleaf?) said I should plant them--well I did on Feb 24 and here they are this morning-- yay!!!! I love growing from seed-- only have 52 other pots of species Begonias and Gessies started. I always do this and then-- once they grow have to figure out what on earth to do with them!!! many plants from the seeds I planted last fall are getting ready to bloom-- I can't wait!! I am up to 3 light stands now from zero when I first started hanging out here!! I think this forum should be renamed to "African Violets and Gesneriads Enablers" ^_^ Y'all need to remember I live in a 620sq ft cabin!!ROFLO Aside from that-- this is the best group on DG--Love Y'all!!
Hillbilly Gran is right. Pet. meglingensis is a species, Short N' Bread is a hybrid.
So far there are only 3 Petrocosmea hybrids (I think).. Short N' Bread, Fluffer Nutter, and Momo. All the rest are species.
That means there's so much "un-tapped" stuff just waiting to be hybridized!!!
That explains my confusion--thanks--I have leaves of 3 hybrids and 3 species--have I mentioned NONE OF THEM ARE ROOTING? I moved them to the window. Not holding out much hope though.
I found that my pets needed a lot more humidity than my Av's-- I kept them enclosed in a plastic container until just a couple weeks ago.
They were enclosed.
Well--darn!!! I did lose 3 out of the 5 leaves I had of those 2 varieties-- I will keep my fingers crossed for yours!!!!!!
i thought this was a strep thread? ;0)
