Have some buds to share!
Hoya polyneura - discovered these just about a week or so ago. Had thought about getting rid of this hoya unitl now! (Oddly the same thing happened with brevialata - as soon as I thought about getting rid of it - it budded!)
March Hoya Buds
Great picture showing those buds underneath the foliage! Can't wait to see a photo of the blooms when they open! I had a polyneura last year but it didn't survive.
Love that variegated bella! Wow, I've never seen an EA bella for sale anywhere. I love variegated foliage and would love to find that one. I have a little teeny bella (the solid green one) that I got in a trade last year ... looking forward to it blooming some day!
Wow! You have so many in bud right now, how exciting! I hope you will post more photo's when the blooms are all opened!
praetori .. another on my wish list ever since I saw a picture on this forum last year!
Lin,
I couldn't believe when I walked into a grocery store near my parents and found FIVE of the Hoya bella "Luis Bois"! I didn't even know EA sold those - I bought them all! Sold 3 and traded the 4th . If I come across anymore by chance I'll certainly let you know! I hope the others that went to new homes are doing as well as mine is! It's a gorgeous plant! It's grown continuously since I got it and the new growth is tinted red....ahhh, simply beautiful. It really stands out amongst the other hoyas!
Kelly
I actually have several others forming peduncles, but probably aren't close to budding at this time...serpens, vitensis, davidcummingi, lacunosa, brevialata, fungii, nummerioides...I think that's it! Hoping it's going to be good couple of months for blooming!
Oh, if you do ever see one, please pick it up for me and I will reimburse you and pay for shipping!
I haven't seen any EA Hoya's here in over a year now. All we seem to get is a lot of ferns and common ivies. :(
Wow, You must be in Hoya Heaven with all those plants budding out!
Congratulations, they are beautiful! I didn't know EA sold H. bella either.
Kelly---I think I might have asked you this before, but can't remember for sure (isn't old age FABULOUS?)...anyhow, how do you grow your hoyas? Do you have a greenhouse, a light set-up, or just on windowsills....thanks...you have several that I either have or want badly, and since we're pretty close geographically I bet what works for you will work for me :)....
Shelley
Hi, Shelley,
I grow mine indoors - some (all of the ones above) are grown in a southern facing window protected by a sheer curtain year-round and a maple tree in the summer. They do get supplemental fluorescent light as well. Of those above the praetori is in semi-hydro (most of mine are in semi-hydro at this point), but the other three are not. Polyneura and bella are in the EA mix they came in and buotii is in a mix of cactus soil, orchid bark and perlite. I've not changed out any of my EA except curtisii to the semi-hydro. Haven't done the buotii yet either just because it's growing so well the way it is! I will say there is a 90 gallon aquarium in that room so the humidity level stays around 50% - a little higher than desirable for inside a home! I can post a picture of the set up that includes these if you want!
Glad I'm not the only one who has trouble remembering! You may have asked the question before, but I wouldn't remember, so ask away!
Kelly
LOL ... I've found that not remembering comes with age! My Mom used to say some folks had selective memory. ^_^ I really get aggravated when I'm staring right at a plant and know exactly what it is but for the life of me can't spit it out ... just draw a blank! Didn't someone say "Getting Old ain't for wimps"?
Kelly, would love to see some photo's of your set-up!
Kelly--Thank you! I think that 90 gallon fish tank might be the secret ingredient in your mix :)....I'm using east and west windows, uncurtained, but humidity in my house is horrifically low....I'm getting an H. buotii cutting from the DL order soon (I hope), but am really worried about it---it's fairly thin leaved, right? So, I worry about how it'll survive the trip from Australia, and then I worry about how it'll adjust to my desert dry house... (and if I have any time left over, I worry about the economy and global warming) :-D.....anyhow, aside from the fish tank, it sounds like our setups are fairly similar---you give me hope that I can actually flower some of these guys on a window sill....and yes, as Lin said, would love to see photos....thanks again...
Shelley
Here's the living room window. Believe it or not there are 52 plants in the window (give or take 1 or 2...kept coming up with a different number every time I counted....?!?...lol) Most are hoyas and a few are orchids. In the foreground are some little terrariums I'm messing around with - so far so good!
Oh, yeah...that's Mylo in the lower right corner - he's keeper of the window hoyas and king of the stinkbugs....

Congratulations Kelly it is beautiful, I'm drooling.
I had a big one and I killed it =( like I said I had no idea EA had them.
Kelly,
Really nice set up and great looking healthy Hoyas.
Doug
Thanks for the kind comments....still have no game plan for when the little plants grow up....actually scares me a little, but doesn't keep me from ordering more!
Kelly
p.s. There are more plants on the enclosed porch, in the basement and a few in the kitchen, bathroom and the office.....
Shelley,
I forgot to answer your question regarding buotii - it is thinner leaved. I didn't realize David Liddle had it. Mine came from Asiatica in late 2007 - it's grown tremendously since then! It's been a favorite of mine all along even though this will be the first it's bloomed! It does have 2 or 3 other peduncles though!
Kelly
Kelly, I Love that window! Perfect for plants of all kinds, especially Hoyas! I would love to have one large window that would hold so many! Your bella is amazing, and I will be so excited if you find another to pick up for me .. although usually it works just the opposite, you find a few and then no more! Keep me posted!
Your linearis looks great too ... mine doesn't have much life left. I do better with the thicker leaf varieties of hoya!
Milo is adorable! Is he an "only child"? We are down to 3 cats in our family and someday hope to adopt a dog.
Lin,
I had purchased one of the Hoya linearis from the EA site- it did not do well....the cuttings didn't even do well! This one I came across in January, I think, at a local Lowe's! It's doing great! It's a much lighter color than the other! Let me know if there are other EA's your looking for and I'll keep watch! The bellas were on sale for 4.99 (actually it was all 6" baskets on sale).....I SO lucked out that day!
Mylo has 4 kitty sisters - I know it seems excessive, but honestly it's more like I have two pairs and a single! Lucy and Allie are best buds, Mylo and Gigi are best buds and Sydney's noncommital yet friendly to all! I also have two senior dogs...Mikey and Murph. Glad to know I'm not the only multi-pet person. How many cats did you have at one time? It's so hard to lose them. My neighbors told me recently that there's a young cream colored, three-pawed kitty wandering around the 'hood....I think they've sort of adopted her...at least I'm hoping so....
Kelly
Are you serious ... the bella's were $4.99 at Lowes?? Our Lowes have the 6" EA baskets for $15.97! Last year they had them priced at $14.97 and they've raised the prices this year. I can't justify paying that much for generic houseplants that you can find almost anywhere but wouldn't mind paying that much for a nice hoya that I don't see often. The same size baskets of EA at Wal-Mart are $11.97. I wish our garden centers would carry more of the hoyas. They have tons of Exotic Angel plants but only ivy, heart leaf philo's, lipstick plants and every once in awhile a dischidia but it's been a long time since I've found a hoya.
You sound like us with the cats! We started out with 3 of our own, then inherited my mother in law's two old cats, making it 5. Then when my mom passed away, we adopted her cat. The past four years a few of them have died so we are down to three now, ages 15, 14 and 12. We miss having a dog in the family but hopefully some day we will adopt another canine.
Lin,
Vermont is like where you live when it comes to finding an EA Hoya at Lowes or Home Depot - I've never seen one at Walmart. The few that I occasionally find are so completely soaked that they seem to weigh 15lbs, and I feel that it is already too late to save them. I won't take the chance on a $15 Hoya. A couple of weeks ago I found what was labeled Hoya green leaf; it looked like DS70 or whatever they call it these days. The plant was beautiful, but once again it was so soaked, I don't think it could be saved.
Doug
Lin,
The linearis was at Lowe's - I think that was $14.99. The bellas were at a Giant Grocery store and one of the specials that week was all 6" pots were ony $4.99 - what a bargain! I'm so tickled that it continues to do well!
The tough thing is - as Doug said - is being lucky enough to find any non-carnosa's that haven't been saturated! It's amazing how many times I've gone to take a basket down and ended up with dirty water down my arm! Yuck!
Do you any criteria for adopting a dog? Breed preference or size?
Kelly
Kelly---First of all, along with everyone else, I think your setup is just beautiful---and such big healthy looking plants! Congatulations, and you give me hope :)....second, DL doesn't list h. buotii, but I e-mailed him and asked about it and he allowed as how he did have some and if he could, he'd include it in my order---so it's not 100% sure, but hopefully he'll have a cutting for me....I wanted to order the buotii from Asiatica, but their shipping costs were so brutal it would have cost me over $40 for one 2 1/2" potful...I have ordered from them in the past (before the shipping increase) and they do have very nice plants...sigh....anyhow, the fact that it's growing and even putting out peduncles for you is a good sign and I'm pretty excited....AND, I, too, think the h. bella 'louis bois' is gorgeous...may have to put that on my list for the future....
Shelley
Our Home Depot's always have bone dry plants, whereas the plants at Lowes are always floating in water! I really hate seeing the holiday plants (Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day etc) when they are wrapped in the colorful foil and watered until they are soggy!
Kelly: We have no particular breed of dog in mind but have always gravitated to the larger breeds. My husband grew up with a smaller dog but my family always had the Labrador's, Shepherds.
Back in the 70's my husband and I rescued a little guy, mom was a pure bred toy poodle, father was unknown. He was a little shaggy poodle/terrier mix of some sort. At the same time we had a large mixed breed (Lab/Shepherd) and a pure bred Alaskan Malamute. We had to keep the little one separate from the others as he had that mentality of being "king of the world" and wanted to fight with the large dogs. They just wanted to play but then one day the Lab/Shepherd mix turned on him! I guess he just couldn't take the yapping and snarling of the little one anymore. Scared me Big Time! If my husband hadn't been home I'm afraid the little one would have been dead, so from then on we couldn't keep them together. I have always loved Yorkies and think about someday having one in the family but who knows what we will end up falling for, LOL. My husband loves Lab's and we've talked about a Yellow, Chocolate or Black Lab or possibly a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. We like German Shepherds too ... but, I'm pretty sure when we adopt another dog it will be a rescue from the local humane society! We were at the shelter at Christmas time to donate large bags of dog and cat food and had to look at all the animals! We fell in love with one mixed breed dog but knew it wasn't the right time for us to adopt with the older kitties who've never been around dogs.
For now we just have to settle for visiting my sisters dogs! One sister who lives in Fort Lauderdale and her husband have a pure bred Yellow Lab (110 lbs), a Black Lab/Chow mix (95 lbs) and a pure bred English Mastiff (over 200 lbs). Their dogs have no obedience training and are uncontrollable but lovable. It's just scary when a Giant breed like the mastiff wants to sit down on the sofa and he sits on your lap! He is a hoot ... they call them Gentle Giants and he really is, but not too bright. He is just sooo huge. Being around those dogs is like having a pack of 3 year olds vying for attention, trying to shove the other one out of the way to get petted! They sometimes want to jump up on you too ... which can be rather scary. My DH and I could not live with untrained, undisciplined dogs in the household. My brother in law jokes that their dogs flunked out of puppy kindergarden.
My youngest sister who lives in North Georgia has a pure bred Golden Retriever and pure bred Springer Spaniel, both good size dogs but very well trained.
Whoa- I can't imagine having dogs that big with no obedience! Mastiffs are really cool though!
My guys are Mikey - 14 year old Border Collie/Shepherd mix - still pretty active considering some issues he's had the past couple of years (as the vet says - if it weren't for bad luck he'd have no luck at all...)- he's just a happy, go lucky, all is right with world kind of guy. Then there's Murphy - 11 year old Jack Russell and Spaniel mix, probably...cute as can be, but we were asked to leave obedience training as he was disruptive and I had no control over my dog...lol...He's funny. When he would sit down after healing, he would sit facing the opposite direction with his back to the group. When he was demonstrating "Leave it", he would be fine with the command but then he would start rolling around making obnoxious noises...people would laugh and he LOVES an audience...the stories I could tell on him....he's smart and sneaky, almost to the point of being manipulative one minute and then wants to snuggle the next...
Shelley,
If I by chance would come across more of the bellas should I pick one up for you as well? It's a long shot, but I came across 5 at one time last year!
Good luck with getting buotii....I, too, ordered two from DL that weren't in his catalog this year. Keeping my fingers crossed! How soon is he suppose to start shipping? Do you remember?
Kelly
Kelly, I bet Mikey is a gorgeous dog with that mix! And, Murphy sounds like a hoot! I've heard Jack Russell's are very smart dogs ... sounds like he wanted to be the class clown, LOL!
This was at Christmas, the most recent picture I have of "Bubba", my sister & brother in law's dog. He is a 3 yr old English Mastiff, a great dog ... they call these Mastiff's "Gentle Giants" and he is very gentle, A Huge dog, but I think his brain is the size of a pea, not too bright!
Oh poor Mikey. don't listen to them. I'd love to give you a biiiig hug. I love big dogs but don't have room. Although my vasriegated minim doxi thinks he a rottweiler. I had a rotty and still miss him. Does Mikey like to lean on you Kelly? My Rotty and Dobies did. When my daughter was in h.s we had a Dobie and she loved to get myn daughter up in the morning by pouncing right in the middle of her. That's hard on the body, not to mention the psyche! :-)
Lin, I love Bubba, beautiful dog, seams that your sister spoils him.
I also like that picture on your babies, mortswife.
These are two of my big crew. Have a son that is a vet student so I ended up with more that I wanted but hey, I love them all.
Pecas (freckles in Spanish) and Oreo. Both rescued by my son; the dog was brought in to the vet clinic my son works during the summer. At six months old the owner wanted to put him to sleep because he was growing too much. The cat same thing 12 days old left there to be put down. I wonder why people don't fix their animals if they don't want more (among other reasons) Their loss my gain.
Hope you like them.
Oh, Lourdes ... the photo won't enlarge so I can see your beautiful pets! I love the names you chose! I am so bad at picking names for pets, always makes me mad that I can't come up with cute names for our critters!
We are down to three old kitties in our household. This is our sweet "Cali" who will be 15 in July.
If I were to win the Lottery, I would have my very own Humane Society!
This is "Miss Princess", (I think you can see her on the back of the settee.) She was my Mom's cat and we took her when my Mom passed away four years ago. I've been saying her name should be "Queen" because she sure thinks she's queen around here! She tries to rule the house and the other two cats. They don't like her at all because she tries to pick fights.
What a beautiful pair, they sure look compatible!
Last but not least for me. This is our "Cookie". She was a feral kitten, @10 days old when we found her in the shrubbery next to the house. The humane society was going to put her down and we couldn't bear to let them, so we ran to the nearest pet shop (got there right as they were closing), bought a little bottle and cat milk ... had to bottle feed her for a few weeks. She is sweet but can be ornery when she wants! She is afraid of anyone and everyone that comes into the house. If the doorbell rings, she dives under the covers on the bed, there will be this big lump in the bed but she thinks she is safe.
