Genetic for Dummies

Clarkson, KY

Well the barring gene has me flummoxed...maybe a few generations down the road...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I don't know much about the barring gene I'm afraid.

(Zone 7b)

You mean barring as in barred rock?

Clarkson, KY

Yuppers. Makes freaky weird patterns on males and females when crossed, but differently. Males are louder patterns -spangled and stuff. Females get streaks or lacing.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

As I know nothing about fowl genetics, I shall retire to my corner and contemplate the bovine world.
Robert

Clarkson, KY

LOL. Glad you chimed in Robert!! I know nothing either but it's not stopping me...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh come on Robert, tell us about bovine genetics! We could all learn something I'm sure!

Edited to say - after all, this is the poultry and LIVESTOCK forum, not just poultry! Bovine is livestock! So is Ovine and Caprine, so let's hear about it!

Pavonine! Asinine?

Clarkson, KY

Egads! Vocabularian strikes again!!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh no! The Vocabularian!!! (trembling...)

Is she talking about my donkeys?

Lodi, United States

Heh, heh, heh.....

(Zone 7b)

Well my Crele are BB red X Barred and they have the bb colors with the barred look so Barred must just add bars to a color (i don't know)

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Robert-you are only 70 miles north of me. I thought I was the only one "way out here". Please chime in about bovine genetics, you can chew your cud and get that spaced out look just like the cows do. I have 1 bull a Scottish Highland, and 1 steer a zebu. Obviously, not a very good breeding program. I think what make chicken genetics so confusing is that there are so many different colors and so many different patterns.
Lisa

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Lisa,
My cattle are mixed breed, mostly with a percentage (1/4 to1/2) of simmental. A few have some limousine, and some are part angus or brangus. My herd bull is adeep mahogany red purebred polled simmental. The calves are mostly shades of red with white faces if their mothers have the white face. Some of the angus or brangus crosses will have dark smoky gray calves. Color is immaterial to me, since I sell by the pound at weaning time. Rate of gain per day is what is vital in the cattle business today. I personally do not care for horned cattle, even though I do have some.
Calving season is on now. We have 13new babies so far, and should have more in the next week.
We are really dry this year, and are feeding hay and protein supplements.
Robert

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I fell bad for you cattle ranchers having no grass is crazy. I have everything but sheep and we are obviously having to supplement also. Color is only important to me in my paint horses but ability and personality are more important. I just enjoy the genetics discussion because that's were my education lies, but this poultry thing is making my brain hurt.
Lisa

Clarkson, KY

Hey, I'm very glad to hear about the cattle. We're at the haven't gotten there yet stage. One jersey who needs to be bred. Very easy handler. We're working our way up and trying to bring this patch o' ground back from a very bad place.

Don't think I will ever get to horse genetics...

Alfred Station, NY(Zone 5b)

So, back to the chicken genetics.... anyone know if there are sex-linked color or pattern traits in chickens? And are the sex chromosome pairs reversed in chickens compared to mammals? In mammals, females are XX and males are XY. I used to breed cockatiels and it's reversed - males are XX and females are XY. Makes it very interesting when you have sex-linked as well as non-sex-linked traits and you're trying to figure out what the babies are going to be.

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

We have nothing but cattle now, except for DWs two pasture ornaments.
We were fortunate enough to make a late hay crop last fall and had a stockpile when we began feeding in Nov. If we get normal rain in April we will probably not have to sell cattle.
Lisa, I agree with you about horses ability and personality, even though the best cowhorse I ever rode was mean! Riding him across a pasture you had to watch all the time so that he did not hurt you, but put him after acow, and you could relax and enjoy the ride.

Patrob on my computer your post is like ten miles long whats up with that??

Clarkson, KY

Same here Har -probably undeleted returns. Happens sometimes.

{{{maybe it means we missed something really cooollll....:-(}}}

(Zone 7b)

Grownut you haven't spoken to me in Days where you been LOL ^_^

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

"Undeleted Returns" What's that? I'm officially bowing out of this poultry genetic discussion do to utter ignorance. I have a friend who breeds snakes (cobras) for color, they use them in movies and they are collectible. But the information that I did contribute was for mammals and just basic stuff. The sexual dimorphism thing makes poultry more difficult because what you see is not what you've got.
Patrob- My horses are bred for dressage and jumping. I love to watch cow horses work but my saddle doesn't have a horn and the few times I have tried I screamed and that upset the horse. Got to go feed, the donkeys are yelling .
Lisa

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Undeleted returns are when you hit the "enter" key a whole bunch of types after what you type...

....like that.

If you do that after the end of your post, it makes the post really long but empty on the bottom.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Gallesfarm - yes the sex chromosomes are reversed in chickens too.

Patrob - what is a Brangus? Is that an angus cross of some kind?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I know you addressed this question to Patrob but a brangus is an angus x Brahma. I'll let Robert tell you why this cross is used so often.
Robert-Hey be careful with that "lawn ornament comment" just kidding. Claire and I both already have the Whole market when it comes to lawn ornaments. OK I am walking away from the computer. You guys are addicting!
Lisa

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Ah! Of course! I should have thought of that!

I have Light Brahma breed of chickens! Three of them! They are definitely not crossed with any Angus!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL Claire

Clarkson, KY

mmm....feathered cows....

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Grownut....all I can think is...."Dang it, grab an umbrella, here comes another flock of those cows"

Clarkson, KY

I hope you're not thinking that at work. If I behaved publicly like i did reading that thought o' yourn..... hoothollerchucklecrygigglegigglegiggle...weeeeeep....

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)
