Mine usually come in heavy on the feeders for about a month in febuary, then as things start to bloom they prefer the flowers. We have hundreds of trees and shrubs in flower for them to savor. After the flowers have slacked off they come back to the feeders more.

Show me your hummingbirds
I'm assuming they were nesting. They disappeared for about 3 weeks. Now they're back with a vengeance. We have a huge old holly tree here that I always assumed they nested in but I didn't see hide nor hair of them for awhile.
Well that gives me hope and just as an added incentive, I bought a hanging fuschia to entice them. Covering all bases. LOL My hummer flowers aren't blooming yet.
Thistle, I obviously misunderstood. I thought you were just getting your hummers for the first time. I'm really glad they hadn't deserted you.
I have a few steady customers at both front and back, but as RJ said, finding where they nest is more than just a challenge here. My flowering quince is totally out of control and a week or two ago there were hummers in there nearly as thick as the bees on my flowering rhodie.
I keep meaning to cut the quince back, but have no motivation this time of year.
Ooh, and somebody's protecting his feeder . . .
oooohh. Snapping beaks for sure. Great picture.
I love it when they fan out those little tail feathers.
We have a really plump one that seems to sit on the feeder most of the day. He/she will drink then look around for awhile and then drink some more. It isn't fazed by the others bombing in and out.
So little time, so much to drink! Cute
Excellent. My neighbor just saw one at her feeder, too. Maybe they just needed the encouragement of the sun.
Jana, Hooray for you! And you got a picture too! I have been trying to get a good pic of my hummers since they showed up in March, and still don't have another to show. It has become a game.....they sit and drink until I THINK about my camera...then they are gone in a flash. Put a new feeder outside the living room window today, so maybe I will get one there.....
Hi guys,
Just wanted to update and say that they're finally back for good. Right now they're concentrating on the "Burning Love” Lychnis, but the Jacob Cline Monarda is close to blooming and they've been checking. ;-) Good news is that they finally warmed up to the new feeder, which is about 3 ft from our chairs in the garden, so it's nice to watch them.
Wonderful pictures Jana, sure takes a long time to warm up to a new feeder.
Good to see you back, Jana. Your garden looks great.
I'm glad to see that the hummers are trusting your garden. I think that once they've staked it out as their territory you'll probably have lifelong friends.
The Lychnis looks great. Mine is kind of floppy and I often forget to stake it until it's too late.
Thanks!
Katie...my lychnis started to fall over too. I find that English "Y" stakes are great at holding them up. The flower heads do flop over sometimes in the afternoon sun, but seem to recover the next day.
I'm not sure if you remember our first e-mail, but it was regarding persicarias. I yanked them out last year, but they came back in a different location this year! I've let them stay, and I'll post pictures when they bloom.
That's right - I remember that we "talked" but forgot that it was about persicarias I'll have quite a show this year as well I'd love to see yours!! Funny every time I drive by a dollar store I think of you
HAHAHA! Well, there's worse things to be remembered by than a dollar store. :-)
Oh yeah It's totally in a good way The key is to know what to get there and what to spend the money on I was remarking the other day to myself that the replacement pyrex lid that I got there is better than the one that came with my pots as it doesn't heat up like they do
Mom and I both love the dollar store. I think half our clubhouse kitchen supplies come from there.
For some reason, Sally, a picture of you and your mom up in a tree clubhouse came to mind, then I rmemebered you lived in a community and had a clubhouse for everyone. That was a very nice picture, though. You were having a tea party with the birds. ^_^
I love the idea of a bunch of adults using a tree house kitchen!!!
Wouldn't that be fun? So far, we've only had 3 hummingbird sightings in the yard. i think I'm just not out there when they are. :)
The treehouse sounds like fun, but I don't think either one of us is up that anymore! Tea parties yes, trees no.
My hummers love the catmint.
Great picture. I had a hummer this morning on the mini fuchsia. The blossoms are only 1/4" long but he was getting something out of it.
HJM, that's an awesome "flaps up" picture!! They should use that in flight training to explain the physics of it. LOL
Great picture!!
Must be a him with all that green
I thought the hims where the bright colors????????????????
I think he is bright. More so than a female.
The really bright colors show up when the sun hits right. Good shot Tills.
Thanks, him or her. can't believe I got it
Why can I see the made in china sign on his rear LOL.
You are looking at the wrong bird LOL
