Show me your hummingbirds

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Today I was wandering around a local nursery and stopped to chat with a worker there I had seen before. She said, let's go check on "HB". I didn't know who that was, but followed her to see. I had forgotten that, a couple of weeks before, I had seen an Anna's hummingbird feeding at the mahonia which was in bloom in the greenhouse.

Lo and behold, the pair made a little nest in one of the small trees in the greenhouse and they are sitting on a couple of eggs.

I would have given my eye teeth for a camera with a zoom. As it is, though, I'm lucky I had my little Kodak with me.

Can you find the bird sitting on the nest?

They had cordoned off a little area to give mom and dad room while the babies are incubating. That's always nice to see.

They returned to the nest every night for a week. In this pic one is in the nest the other is about to try to get in lol there is not room when they are both in at this age they hang over both sides.

We were just so lucky we could watch them right out the slider they wern't 3 feet from our comming and going and as long as we kepr moving they did not seem to care.

They should be coming up on their migration this month. That is awesome. I need to get another feeder for them. I broke the one last year. Mom enjoyed seeing them on the deck.

What great hummer pics!

Rachel and I were there today and so was mama, sitting on her nest, so quiet. She's really devoted to the eggs right now, so they must be getting close to hatch time. I hope they cover up or hide her tree when the babies come - that's a lot of stress. Or they could just block off that one row of plants. Snow today, so I hope she's staying warm tonight. Of course she was a smart girl, choosing a green house.

Thanks for sharing this heartwarming story. I wish I could see it in person, but the pictures are a close second with the close ups of mom on her nest.

Here's one we took in the winter, December, during the 'big one'.

Here's probably the same little gal at the top of one of our magnolia trees a few weeks ago. She has been guarding that position. There is likely a nest nearby but we have not yet located it. I would love to have a nest closer to home where we can observe it.

I was told by someone that hummers won't build on anything solid it has to swing or have give to it. The thing our birds nest on was a wind chime. It was far from solid.

They have such lovely nests!!

Wish I had found this earlier. I've been watching a live webcam of a hummingbird nest for weeks. They've left the nest now, but if you scroll down the page you can view past recordings. And they've put a feeder in now. Sorry but I don't think it's good for dial up.

Beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing. Wish I could see one up close.

I'm glad mama is still sitting. I worry about a noisy kid getting to close, and messing with her, hopefully it won't happen.

I would love to happen upon a nest! How cool. This is a pic I took this winter. We were lucky enough to have the Anna's stay all winter.

That is so cute. I've never seen them perch before. The sky is so blue in that picture.

Everson, WA(Zone 8a)

Katie they perch all the time at our place but then we have lots of small things for them to perch on.

I think I'm gonna come live with you guys!!

We took a trip to Molbeck's on Sunday. My daughter was armed with her camera, there are two babies in the nest. As soon as she downloads and sends me the pictures I'll post them.

This is the only decent hummingbird picture I've ever gotten. I hope I'll be able to get more someday. I've tried a million times to get a picture of one of them sitting on a branch in my coral bark Jap. maple, but no luck so far.

Linda - I'm SO excited to see your daughter's pictures. I didn't make it there last weekend and was wondering about them. Great pictures, you guys. Sue, that is an amazing picture.

Have any of you guys been to http://www.e-hummingbirds.com?

Unfortunately she didn't get a really good shot this time, but you can see their tiny beaks sticking up.

You sure can. That's pretty cool. Too bad she didn't happen to have a ladder with her .

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I was at Molbak's today. They've put several bushy Camellias around the little family to keep them secure. My little camera can't get as close as some, but you can just see the two adolescents in the nest. There is barely room for the two of them and the gal at the nursery who feeds them says the little ones have been standing up and spreading their wings in preparation for practice.

She says the/a male has been back courting the female and that they've "disappeared" into the Hamamelis together several times, so maybe it's time for a second batch? Who knows?

Stretch...........one, two, three. Lift those wings!!

Great pictures Kathy. What fun, to be able to see them up close.

North Lakewood, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh Kathy they've really fluffed up in a week, last week they looked not very well feathered yet.
They are adorable. Next batch may be on the way huh? LOL That what happens when you go in the bushes together.

They are the most photographed hummers on the planet! Those babies will have stars in their eyes.
