Hi,
I threw this chart together as I was packing the Calla lily bulbs for the 2008 Calla co-op. Its pretty sloppy because I was just showing the participants what they ordered.
Many people have asked me to put it in plantfiles, but where would it go?
If I knew it was going to go down in history, I would have put a little more time into it.
I will be packing the 2009 co-op next month, maybe I will make a nicer one.
chris
Where to put this in plant files?
If you could edit the photo (zoom and crop) to make seperate pics for each named cultivar, then you could post the individual pics to the appropriate plant/cultivars. That would be optimum, as the person who is looking for a particular cultivar would then see the image of its associated bulb. Otherwise, if you are planning to post the entire photo as a unit (as it appears above), I would think it would go under the general calla lily entry. There is usually a general catagory for each plant in addition to the various entries for named cultivars.
Of course, this is just my humble opinion. Others may see it differently.
I agree with scutler. If you could get a clear shot of each separate bulb/corm and upload each to it's respective Calla in Plant Files, that would be helpful to anyone checking that particular listing.
I don't think there's a specific forum for Calla Lily's but since (I think) they are in the Aroid family, if you could get a clearer, cropped photo maybe Admin. would add it as a sticky at the top of the Aroid forum. There are two information stickies at the top of the Aroid Forum and another for Calla's might be helpful to those who enjoy growing this lovely plant: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/aroids/all/
I would also think about whether the differences you show between the different cultivars are actually identifiable characteristics, or do all calla bulbs look similar to each other and the variations you're seeing there are part of the natural range that you could expect for any calla. If it's the former and cultivars have distinctive characteristics, then I'd go with the suggestion of separating them and posting them with the appropriate cultivar. But if it's just natural variability manifesting itself then it might be better to put it in the general calla entry and indicate in your description that this demonstrates the range of typical appearance.
There really isn't a general entry for Calla Lilies. We've been working on eliminating all of those 'catch-all' types of entries in PlantFiles, because most of those entries were created when PlantFiles was born, and the database has now outgrown them. We work with the photo submitter and the photos are moved to the correct species or cultivar entry prior to the removal of the entry, if we can identify where they belong. There are now entries for species and individual cultivars, but if there are any general entries left, it's because we missed them, and once identified they will be slated for elimination.
Chris, do you still have all of the bulbs? If so, individual photos of them would be great to add to each separate entry. If not, can you separate them in the photo to upload individually? Photos of the bulbs would be a great addition to each of the PlantFile entries.
Ok, well, when the new ones arrive from this years coop, then I will take seperate pictures. I dont think there is a general Calla entry, but it is very possible that its just me that cant find it. If someone could give me a link, this is where I would put the complete comparison chart.
Each variety of bulb, really is that different. If one bulb looked a certain way, then the entire variety looked that way. Some varieties looked the same as others but many had big enough differences to narrow down an ID for someone.
Many of the varieties we are ordering are the same as last years. I will be curious to see if the new years look the same as last. That will make it for sure that the bulbs have distinct variety characteristics.
I dont know much about them except that, I love them, they survive in spite of me, and I know how to pack them for shipping. I didnt know that they were an Aroid, I will also have to find out what an Aroid is. LOL
I made last years chart just to show people the differences in bulbs that they ordered. This way they didnt think I picked the large bulbs for certain people. If they ordered 'flame' or 'parfait', they were small. If they ordered 'naomi' or 'ascari' they were big.
I will take many pictures and then let admin tell me where to put them if anywhere.
Thanks,
chris
As Joan stated, we are attempting to eliminate as many 'general' entries as possible. PlantFiles has grown far beyond the need for catch-all listings.
Best case would be to take pictures when the new bulbs arrive and post to the individual cultivar. You can still do the comparison chart, which is a nice touch for your co-op. Just zoom in and snap individual shots of each one after you have taken the 'family portrait'
Images of roots, seeds and stems are badly needed in PlantFiles. Everyone thinks to snap shots of the flowers, but the other characteristics are just as important.
Maybe this photo could go in an eggplant entry? ^_^
Sorry, I couldn't resist. The eggs for size comparison was a great idea.
We would be happy to work with you to find the entries for the different bulbs from this year's coop. If you have any problems finding or creating the entries for them, just let us know. Most times people think to upload photos of the gorgeous blooms, but photos of bulbs, roots, foliage, stems, bark, seed heads, seed pods, seeds, seedlings, etc. are all valuable identification tools and are very welcome in the PlantFile entries.
Its funny how you 2 work with the same brain at the exact same time. LOL
I received many comments about the eggs. ie: ostrich or hummingbird? lol.
I will get back with you after I have the pictures.
chris

Yeah, and we are in two very different parts of the country, so it's not like we planned it. ;) I giggled when I saw Melody and I had posted the same thing at the same time. I won't be surprised if we are both typing the exact same thing right now. :)
Chris: I think it will be a great asset to have a photo of the bulb for each cultivar of Calla, at that particular listing in Plant Files. It really helps with identification to have not only bloom photo's (which most of us post) but the roots, bulbs/tubers, stems and foliage as well, so I thank you in advance for adding the bulb photo's to each Plant Files listing.
There are a vast amount of plants in the Araceae family, many listed in Plant Files, and Zantedeschia (Calla Lily) is in there somewhere! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/b/Araceae/none/none/cultivar/0/
Yeah, Joan and I were just separated at birth...
Yeah, and Mel got to go to zone 7 and I got sent to zone 4. Where's the fairness in that?
Yeah, but this last month has been brutal here in west KY. (payback I guess)
Yeah, there is that alright.
Still no cable and land line phone. Limbs are still poking through my greenhouse as well.
But the grass is turning green!
You have green grass? I still have deep snow on the ground and it's snowing again today! Stupid groundhog!
Yep, the grass is green. I'll be mowing in 2 weeks.
Ready! Aim! Fire!....Splat!!!
(I sent you a snowball) ^_^
LOL. If that snowball hits me here in Georgia, (their calling for possible snow on Sunday), Im gonna send you a Hail storm. LOL.
All my daffodils and Hyacinths are just opening!
chris
Daffs are open here as well. Saw a bunch today.
Warn me if you see a snowflake. I'll duck!
The weather has been weird nationally this year. Today the temps were above 82 and tomorrow night will be 35 degrees. Poor plants just don't know what to think.
We had a high of 79º here today, tomorrow is supposed to be low 80's but a cold front is coming through tomorrow night and Sunday's high is going to be only 60º!! Weird weather this year for sure.
Sending all y'all Northerner's ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ Lots of Sunshine
... but, I don't want any Snowballs or Hail or Sleet in trade, LOL.
It's -3 degrees here right now. It seems to me that it's usually starting to warm up a bit by this time of year. It's almost March after all.

I have taken individual pictures of the 2009 bulbs.
Is there an easy way of getting them all in the right places?
If they need to be uploaded the regular way into each variety area, then I will have to do a little each day. My time is at a premium right now and I dont see it settling down for about 6 weeks.
Here is an example of what the pics I took. There are about 45 of them.
They look great Chris! Thank you so much! These will be a great addition to the PlantFile entries. The bulbs really do look different for each variety, don't they?
Unfortunately, you will have to upload them individually to each PlantFile entry. The good news is that you don't have to resize them. They will be fine.
If you can't find entries for some of them and need help creating the entry, just let us know.
Ok, I will try and get them in over the next week. I am glad they dont need to resize.
Some are very similar to other varieties, but most have something that will narrow down an ID to just a few possibilities.
The size of the bulb is a major variety characteristic, not just the age of the bulb.
Thats the reason for the eggs and quarters.
This is the list of pictures I have. Hopefully most are in plant files.

I did a quick search and they are all in PlantFiles.
You may have trouble finding the entry for Large White Aethiopica, because it's a species. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/768/
Here's the last two plants on your list:
Arisaema speciosum http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/56245/
Arisaema griffithii http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54809/
If you have any problems, let us know.
Thanks for the links.
That took way less time than I thought it would!
They are all uploaded except Regal. That will be here in a few days.
Thanks! They are a great addition to PlantFiles and much appreciated.
I really miss the "catch all" entries. They were a good place to check for photos like the one at the top of this thread as well as general culture notes. Growing, say, calla lilies is going to be pretty much the same regardless of which named variety you grow... and now, to find general tips I have to look at hundreds of individual entries. I realize "general culture tips" might not have ever been the major purpose of PF, but it's one of the things I used to use it for when growing a new-to-me species of plant.
I know, water under the bridge. :-)
Jill - Same here, those are the PF I used most, they had a wide range of information and if you did not know the cultivator it gave just good old information on the plant in general. One of those things that goes out of fashion for progress.
Maybe we need a new subsection, "PF for Dummies" or something, with basic info on genus/species.
(Not that I'm suggesting either or us as "slow" -- I consider that whole "for Dummies" series to be genius. LOL)
Ditto - I think it would be great with maybe the links in there to all the species of the plant...
Hmm, perhaps we should start a separate thread about this (feel free if you're inspired; I'm heading back outside)... I wonder who else is missing those general entries... with luck, Dave may even have them archived somewhere. ?
Will do - I know I used them.
