Maybe the last fire before spring? Pull up a chair & visit

Good for you! You will be looking at the rest of us that are bundled up from what we call cold and you will be laughing... LOL

Man, y'all have been gardening without me! I didn't realize our "fireside" was still going. Last I was here, we were leaving for Scotland in March and I haven't been back to the "fire" since. I'm home, but wishing I was still in Scotland, or anywhere that's it's cooler than it is right now in Texas. I think the devil lives in Houston and rents out Hell because Houston is hotter. I'm sure getting wimpier in my old age, because this heat is killing me. You'd think since I was born here and I've lived in Texas most of my life, I'd be used to it.

Does anyone have anything thriving rather than just surviving this heat and drought? Anything with blooms other than hibiscus? My coral vine and hibiscus are going strong, and I have some tough daylilies that are still blooming, but the foliage is looking a bit scorched. Most everything is looking a bit scorched and wilted.

I'll remember to check back in more often. I don't want to miss anything :)

Whew!! I can't believe y'all keep stoking this fire! LOL This weather has been grim. How could it stay so humid when it was also so dry? Finally raining here and we are gratefully receiving it.

How was your trip to Scotland? A good one I hope.

Seems most of the flowers that bloom in the heat of summer are small ones. Those in ground are struggling. The ones I've kept potted and watered are delivering scanty blooms. Maybe the smaller bloomers can endure the heat better.

I do have a couple of different Hibiscus finally beginning to bloom. I also have Crinums, cigar plant ~ Cuphea ignea, Angelonia, rock rose ~ Pavonia, hummingbird plants ~ Hamelia patens & Dicliptera suberecta , Angelwing Begonias and a new one for me that is loaded with delicate blooms is the Golden Thryallis. Not showy but pretty...

My Hot Cocoa doesn't seem to be bothered at all by the heat

Mmmm mmmm and it goes so good with this fire! LOL Very pretty!

It's about 6' tall, I can't reach the top to deadhead it. I originally had it in a planter, and thought it was pretty wimpy, but I guess it just wanted the 10 hours of sun it gets now and room to stretch!

I've also been really pleased with the dwarf buddleia (sp?) I think the name is Lo and Behold Blue Chip

I've never had luck getting a buddleia to survive a summer here. I had one make it almost a year, then gave up the ghost. The last one I tried, I put near a sprinkler system head, so it got water, but still didn't make it. I'm not sure if it's the heat or the heat/humidity combo, but they croak. Does anyone in Houston gets these to grow and what's the secret to keeping them alive? Do they need some shade? I love the look of the plant, but can't seem to find a spot they're happy in.

Pod, my trip to Scotland was wonderful. I always love going there though. It's got to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. I just love the land, the history, the people, and the climate. Wish we could afford to live there full time.

Y'all keep posting your "best of show" summer bloomers. I'm interested in anything that thrives in this heat!

Irwells, your path out to the patio area near the trees is so nice. It even looks cool with all those nice green trees as a backdrop.

The "cool" is definitely an illusion!

Someone replace that fire with an A/C or block of ice, something cool! After the horrid summer heat we've had this summer, I don't even want to think about a fire! BTW, the sprinkle yesterday when the temps plunged to 73° in the afternoon felt good! I was freezing and loving it!

A/C..I hear that!!!!!

We got 1 1/4 inches yesterday and it sure felt good. The garden is lovin it too.

There is finally some green in this here ole' garden.

Monday I picked 2 1/2 lbs of okra and yesterday's harvest was 4 lbs even. There's plenty for the freezer now.

Here is a picture I took a few days ago...from left to right, sweet taters, southern peas, okra, beans, and peppers. This stuff has survived in spite of this Summer's heat.

How's y'all gardens doing?

Jerry
