Gardening: Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #30

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Congratulations, kl. Well done.
Mona, if the poppies don't grow either, I'll believe that 6-pak is cursed and will have to make offerings to the seed gods before I use it again.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Mona, I've come home with my pockets full of seeds so many times too. Just can't resist. I've become the same way about perennials, at first because I'm so cheap, but as time has gone by, I now so enjoy raising a plant from seed to maturity so much too. As far as gardening is concerned, its become more about the journey than the destination.

I have wintersown Red Flax germinating today! And found some Sweet William germinating yesterday. Spring really is on the way!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

last october my DH got so mad because I noticed this new gallardia that I had wanted but had been sold out every where growing where may you ask well you can ask it was just by the drive thru at tim horton coffee and well I held up the drive thru because I decided that getting out of the car and collecting a few dead heads was just what I wanted to order and not a coffee since we had gotten one at the last timmies

the ladies at the drive thru laughed so hard I had to ask what was so funny they said I was like the 10th person to do that just in a few days

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

lol! My husband and daughter were mortified when I started doing this in the fall. They aren't sure whether it is 'stealing' or not. I always ask if there's someone around, just can't in a public park. Of course, my asking always embarasses them more :) So far most of the seeds I've 'snatched' have been duds anyway, there must be a lot of hybrid planting going on in public places.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Kelly, I've had that happen too, and one time the seeds germinated but the resulting plant barely resembled the parent. I think most parks and public plantings are modern hybrids, especially annuals.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

I have columbine! They have got to be the most erratically germinating things I have ever attempted to grow! They're hogging my mat, because I did a whole flat of various kinds. Some have been up a while (like almost a month!), some are just getting started, and some haven't germinated at all (including some commercial seed :(

Do you think I can take them off the mat? It stays 68 or above in my house anyway, so they certainly won't freeze... I hate to give up on the slow starters, but it's about time, and I also worry that it's not great for the ones that are up to continue being heated.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Columbines don't need heat to germinate... in fact they are great candidates for winter sowing... hope you don't mind another article link: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2091/

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

:) Had to try both ways, as I was not very confident about the Winter sowing, first time and all. Some of my winter sowed columbines are up now, so I'm a believer. Still enjoy having them inside to baby though. Now that I know both ways work I can be flexible depending on space!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

the worst was when I went to white house perennials garden center and I saw the biggest poppy head ever and I just had to have it so I made my sister stand facing me blocking the owners view so I could cut it and put in a bag hahah all my sister said was I own half of those seeds hahahha

Star,
That was the funniest seed collecting story I've read in a long time. Maybe ever. Laughed so hard I had to practice the kegel maneuver! Dad would have called that one a keeper, then emailed it to me. LOL!
I don't think it is stealing to deadhead flowers, but rather a public service. You go get them other seeds on your next visit to your sister, DREAMS!
I've used everything from the cellophane to actual cigarette packs in a pinch to save seed in. After I quit my office job, I used all those knee high stockings for seed collecting. I really hate anything resembling nylons. So I couldn't wait to get rid of em.
My family has quit looking askance at my seed collecting activities. My friends aren't quite sure what to think. I'm with you, Star and don't care.
I always try to have pockets or baggies, or something to collect seed in. Just as soon as you don't, something wonderful comes your way. That's why seed collectors are so good at improvising. LOL! Never thought of using my socks, but then again, I seldom wear them. Would have tied them in a knot in my Tinkerbell t-shirt. I have done that before too.

Forgetting here Star ,
Did you share your story about tumbleing down the hill with your class one day trying to gather seed, Ella really is good at getting what she goes after no matter what the cost.
She just doesn't realize the laughter and joy she bring's to all that watch her lovely tumble's.
One of kind you are my friend!!!!

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

I had to have DW read about your adventure. She giggled till she got to the end. Then laughed out loud..She said heck I would have taken off my bra to carry seeds,.LOL

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Hahahahahahahaha.... Tubby. You tell your DW thanks, : ) now I have a new avenue for seed gathering if I have nothing else. Not much up top, but hey when ya on a seed mission anythign and everythign will work. Tell her good idea : )

Carolyn. Nope not yet, when I get some time, will have to get that one put on Dg for folks. need to label that one all eyes are on me or something like that . LOL

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I see seeds as the only thing in this world that belongs to everyone they are just there free and waiting for someone that cares to bring them home and give them a new place to live hahahhahahah

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

>>preferring the tried-and-true Crossing Of The Fingers methodology, followed by a beer celebration.

ROFL -- yeah, i prefer the crossing the fingers method too.

Maaaan, i'm wondering how i manage to get so far behind on these threads... seems i just can't keep up lately.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

dont you know its a full time job ahahhahaha

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Great story Ella!
Tcs, want you to know that your gaillardia pulchella just popped right up with great vigor. The other gaillardias that I planted the same way indoors have done nothing, so hoping its just that they need stratification and maybe the wintersown ones will grow. I looked it up and some places said it's an annual. Is yours annual or perennial, do you know? And is it a red and yellow one, or pink and yellow as some pictures I saw?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

some gallardias are annuals and some are perennials
the annuals are usually called goblins
just like rubeckias some are annuals and just reseed and some are perennials coming back from the root each year its all so confusing so I always put some seeds from each plant at the base in the fall and I am never disapointed that way

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

perennially -- this is a photo of one of mine. http://davesgarden.com/community/trading/image.php?user=tcs1366&pid=59179

we had a big discussion on what i have, as I am not sure. Mine originally came in a mix. I was thinking at first, it was Goblin, but it's not, as Goblin is more compact. I now have it listed as "Indian Blanket" and i have so many of them in the back, i have no idea if they are coming back from seeds or not.

...but - i just checked my spreadsheet from last years sowing, and i did not grow them last year. SO, they could be a perennial.... or they just self sow very well.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

just found the thread in "Perennials" where we were discussing what i have. Looks like Indian Blanket

Hey Star I'm starting to see Spots too!

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Just wanted to let y'all know how much fun I had in the yard yesterday. I put seedlings in the beds of 4 different kinds of hollyhocks, some Malva sylvestris and malva muschata and some purple hyacinth bean vines. Last week I put out some poppies. Almost all of the seeds came from the piggy swap! I have to admit, I'm really having to let go of my tendency to want to plan it all out and just go with the haphazard cottage garden look instead. It's a good experience, getting in touch with my "wild side"!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Lala... Oh oh.. looks like ya caught it too. Lookign good there!!!!!!! heheheheheh . fudge, now gotta try and hunt so I got some without the spots.

I got soem thigns transplanetd today and then the rains came. We got em tonight tommorrow and on sunday wil have either rain or snow. That a bunch of rotten eggs for us in the south. : (

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

nb ... you are planting out already??
we're still below freezing today.... though our temps have been up and down a lot lately... i think we were 52 on Wed and 47 yesterday with pouring rain, thunder and lightening.... we probably wont warm up a bit for a good month... but midwest weather is quite unpredictable.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

We have had unseasonably warm weather, high 80's. The lowest forcasted for the next 10 days is 35 and 36 on Saturday night and Sunday night. I'll put a cloche of some kind or sheets over what I've put out those two nights just to be on the safe side. I really ws itching to put some more stuff out this weekend, because I have plenty that is ready to go, but will wait till next week. It's easier to protect the plants in their WS containers than all spread out in the beds. No rain for us here, nuch to our chagrin! The drought continues.
