There are two new icons on each article. I have "clicked" on them and don't really understand how they relate. Can someone give me an explanation?

articles
I see those new icons under links and I just had to click on them too. Both are new to me, Facebook and something called Stumble Upon. I don't have a clue about either of them ... old blonde here and I don't get it ... usually I just ignore stuff I don't "get", LOL. ^_^
Stumble upon is one of those compendiums of links....... the idea is the more people add something to Stumble Upon, the further up in rank the item goes and eventually it shows up more frequently in searches and also on websites that collect popular links -- I believe Stumble Upon has its own webpage also that is a collection of items that are selected by large numbers of readers. There are several of these out there now.
Facebook is one of those social networking sites, MySpace is another, I have several friends who are active on Facebook but I have enough to do with t he forums I frequent and not interested in it (well, so far, LOL!)
As far as we can tell, if you have a facebook page, you can link it to that article, or the other way around. We writers have been experimenting and trying to figure them out ourselves!
So it's basically a way to get more traffic, yes?
If you're a writer, you can share your articles with your family etc. .... Yep. I guess basically it is.
Hey, traffic is good! ;-) This kind, anyways........
part of Name Media?
LouC, that was my first thought ... that it had something to do with Name Media, or they have approved the links from DG Articles to those other places.
I think administration ought to remind us of forwarding good articles to friends. I sent the one on cactus to a friend and she is going to join DG just because she got so excited about today's article.
She doesn't know too much about her computer so she can't join until she comes back down here and I sign her up. (LOL)
She even printed out all the colored pictures of the cactus and put it in her plant book she made for shopping for cactus.
What is Name Media?
Name Media is the company that owns DG.
Ah. Thank you.
There is also a Dave's Garden group on Facebook. Quite a number of DG members are a part of it. I'll see if I can find a link to the DG home page on FB.
Here's a link to DG on Facebook....

I just had a thought...that might not work if you aren't already a member of FB, in that case go to Facebook.com, I think, and join. Costs nothing and is fairly interesting. I like the DG part anyway.
The questions have been answered, but I'll add in:
I added those icons as a convenience to users of stumbleupon and facebook, so they can easily share the articles they liked with their friends. The goal isn't to get more traffic (although that's nice!) but more to make it convenient to share the article with friends.
The icons are small and diminutive by design. If you already use those websites then you would instantly recognize the icons and know what they are for.
Speaking of that, if anybody wants sharing enabled for other types of sites, let me know and I'll happily add them to the articles area, too.
I think it's wonderful to be able to share the articles with family and friends! Now I just need to get with it and see what Face Book is all about, LOL. I have heard of My Space ... just always thought it was something for teenagers! Aaaah ... tis a technological age we live in, isn't it?
Many Thanks to Dave & Co. for this caring, sharing place!
Yes, well, recently saw a mention that the Dalai Lama has joined Twitter! I still resist, some of it all just moves too fast for me. ;-)
So now anyone can say 'Hello Dalai.'
*groan*
lol!
^_^ Good one, Victor! ^_^
I love it when Victor joins the crowd!
Thanks for the explanation. I knew it must be something good but didn't quite understand how. More to learn.

Stumble Upon is owned by the eBay folks. I remember a while back when that was announced on their web site.
Karen
Who owns Facebook?
As far as I know they still own themselves.
Mark Zuckerberg founded it, don't know more.
I rec'd a msg that they have changed their TOS and individuals no longer have exclusive rights to pics they post. I'm trying to find out the truth. Their legalese is hard to decipher.
I saw something about that too, but did not follow the link, but apparently they are claiming more rights than once they were.
I read they were claiming them all along, that they were just clarifying. The same way a thread is on here forever (barring something quite exceptional), whatever you blab on FaceBook is there FOREVER. You can't take it back.
Well, my goodness, this has apparently become a cause celebre and has made the Google News Sci Tech top story just now:

I am not a Facebook user and have no bone to pick here, but thought it worth sharing an article about the flap.
I have noticed it in several news articles throughout the day.
Post from Facebook Admins:
Terms of Use Update
Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.
If you want to share your thoughts on what should be in the new terms, check out our group Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.
Wow! Nice to see that kind of response to popular feedback. ;-)
Yes, it is. I'm really not sure if there was a real change in policy or just the legalese became more difficult to understand. Either way, members need to be informed of a coming change before it happens, not after. Many peeps are deleting FB accounts, according to some postings.
I remember reading something about Flickr along those lines too, that they own any photos we up-load. Made me decide not to use Flickr.
Flickr is owned by Yahoo. They do not own any photo you upload, and if you read their terms of service, they spell that out very clearly. In fact, when you upload photos there, you can choose which copyright license you want to use. You can choose any form of the Creative Commons licenses, which can either be very restrictive (you may not use my photos at all) or very free (you can use it, modify it, adapt it for commercial use, etc), or anywhere in between. Give them another try. :-)
Disclaimer: I don't work for them, get paid by them, or even have an account with them. I do, however, occasionally do searches there for photos with Creative Commons licenses that I can use for different projects (mostly backgrounds for PowerPoint slides.)
