What have you wintersowed so far -part three.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Sure thing :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Peppermint will grow from seed... but a specific cultivar is unlikely to grow "true." I try to deadhead mine to prevent self-sowing, and I just propagate it by division. I do the same with named varieties of other herbs, with the exception of basil (there are a few basils that can't be seed grown, but most are fine from saved seed as long as you don't get crossing).

I sowed commercial hybrid seeds of "Double Decker" (from Summer Hill) Echinacea this year. I've also heard that at least some seedlings from seeds saved from a Double Decker plant will bloom with those double blooms, although sometimes not until their second year of flowering.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Okay, you all have given me the urge to wintersow. Here's what I've started with :
English Lavender
Black eyed Susan
Sweet William
Hops
Purple coneflower (these seeds were hiding in a drawer...they are from 2000! I just threw them in a pot instead of the garbage. We'll see...)
Sargents crabapple (tree)

I'll keep you informed as I go...

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

blomma, they are from seed I collected at a Horticultural Center (with permission). They looked just like Fanfare to me. They are just an experiment, and I doubt they'll germinate, because I shared some with my mom, and those are the only seeds out of some 50 varieties she sowed that didn't come up. Can't hurt to try, though!

Thanks for the heads-up, though!

Whoa, Anita! Made me dizzy reading your list. You have been busy! Great list of plants. I particularly like your selection of penstemons and poppies.

Angie

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

The penstemons are new to me this year. So I'm curious to see how they do.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Anita -- I just love the Husker Red. It's a second year bloomer, but so worth the wait. I just love the foliage and lil white flowers.

I'm up to 76 containers.... i'll have to make a list of what i've sown though....

Corrales, NM(Zone 7a)

Awesome Anita!

So have you done your Dahlias this early before? I saved those back. I also pulled a few others that I thought I would save for later.

I am almost to the point of being able to sow everything else. We have been SOOOOO warm.

I am up to 85 and I have 24 containers on my counter waiting for today. Then I have finally reached the end of my pile o' jugs. LOL. From here on I will have to just sow as I get containers. I should have anything covered that NEEDS the cold.

Thief River Falls, MN(Zone 3b)

WooHoo!
I finally got my seeds! I am getting my containers ready this morning, then I have a brief meeting at DS school. I will then hurry back and get going on seeds! I just hope I'm not to late?

critterologist? Have you ever sown mina lobata or butterfly pea? Just wondering if I need to 'scratch' the seed before I WS.

I feel like Im back in the game! Thanks for all your encouraging posts!

Wow, you guys have been busy! I have new sprouts - this is so exciting. Two of the Rudbeckia hirta containers have now officially joined my family, along with the 3 containers of poppies. It was 27 this morning, DH had put a couple of moving blankets on the babies before I got up. That was so considerate of him.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

I'm happy to report I have 2 jugs that have sprouted. I have blue flax and gypsophilia sprouting this morning. Also I discovered that the grape boxes that I sowed last week were rather dry. It has been very windy lately and I hope I didn't let them get too dry. Now I know to check them more often. Last year I left all my containers in back of the house and this year decided to move to the front for S exposure. It has made a difference for the sprouting. YYYaaayyy

Wow what you all going to do with all those plants.lol

OH heavens are we having a nice day... i've been out [in the mud] cleaning up debris from last year and LOTS of stuff is popping up.. problem is.. i have no idea what they are. I actually came in to take off this heavy sweatshirt and put on a Tshirt because the sun is too warm... then i remembered i have to grocery shop [oh crap]

so -- i have to skedaddle...

Kannapolis, NC

I hate shopping of any kind, except plants! That I can do all day long. But grocery shopping is one of those things I've got do again pretty darn soon.

Angie

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Shirb, I'm sorry, have no clue about mini lobata or butterfly pea.. I'm trying some sort of sand pea or butterfly pea for the first time this year; looks to me like a seed that would appreciate a soak for a few hours anyway, just as you would any pea or bean.

Does Penstemon 'Husker's Red' come true from seed? I've got seeds from 2 different sources this year, and I'm really hoping to add this one to my garden. Love the foliage!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Angie, I'm with you 100% on the shopping thing.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

yea -- same here... but the kids were complaining there wasn't much food in the house.

so -- i got enough for 2 days. with Pot Roast for tomorrow.

well, now i've decided to wash the garage floor - from winter yak... then wash the cars... THEN get back out in the dirt.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I am a lucky woman..DH does the grocery shopping and the cooking! I do the walmart shopping!

I did some asclepias incarnata seeds today.

Havelock, Canada

I have more to add to my list of what I have WSed. Did much more on Wednesday. I do have to go and check my spelling of the names because I am quite a neophyte but learning all the time. I will post my updated list on the weekend.

Just a question - Maybe I should start another thread but thought I would throw it out here. I am in Zone 5a. How late is too late to WS my seeds?. I still have some great ones left that I wanted to start earlier and now am afraid that I have waited too long. We are having mild weather right now but our deep freeze weather is sure to return. The temps will fluctuate a lot this month and even next.

Any advice would be appreciated. Would it help if I told you what I have left to sow? I do have some seeds handy but will have to dig through my treasures to retrieve the seeds I saved on my own.

Happy Gardening
Spring is on its way!

Elaine and Otis

Just in case anybody is wondering who Otis is ..................................

Here is a picture of him with my DGS. Otis is now 15 months old and my best friend.- most days. He adores my Grandson and never wants to leave his side. He was stymied by the gate being up but still found a way to keep an eye on him.

Thumbnail by Procrastinator
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Kraehill. I've been thinking P. 'Husker's Red' was a "propagate vegetatively" cultivar, but a lot of folks have mentioned growing it from seed, so I thought it might come close to "true" that way also.

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Oh.. Otis is a beauty!! and I think he was eyeing that bowl more than the DGS at that point anyway LOL..

What is his breed? I'm thinking Golden? We had two, but the oldest passed away last year and the younger just wouldn't come out of her depression. So we found her a home with 2 small kids and what a world of difference in her.

But I still miss them both :(

Havelock, Canada

Otis is indeed a "Goldie." It is a very touching story of how he came to me but I can't get into all that here.

He is the product of eweed's generosity - to help me recuperate from back surgery. The only physiotherapy I was to do after my major surgery was to walk and we walk 3 to 5 miles some days. He is great company and a godsend.

I had a very generous sponsor from DG who was my Guardian Angel. The details of Otis finally getting to me (by plane) are heartwarming and will bring a tear to anyone's eye. The people in DG are amazing and I will always be grateful to so many that made my dream come true.

He is my "miracle dog" and I went from feeling like the unluckiest person in the world to the luckiest. He is a daily reminder of just how many wonderful people there are in the world. Too often we here only the negative. Not in this case though.

There is a reason they are called goldies. They have hearts of gold and are so loyal and ooze personality.

Now - Back to our regularly scheduled program - LOL

Any ideas about how late is too late to plant perennials and biennials?

Hugs
Elaine and Otis

Here is another but you can see that Otis is indeed eye balling Aiden's food and looking forward to clean up time.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Elaine -- i do recall stumbling upon the thread when Otis was a puppy. and i remember how he was traveling to CA... it was a great story...

but now.. i just have to ask... What plant did he 'up root' [to put it gently] ? gotta admit, i was chuckling at his story in the Dawg Howse.

regarding zones... I'm 5a too .... i just keep on sowing until i'm tired of it.
I have a lot more seeds to go.... and geeze, it's already the first week of March. I do not have any germination out of any of my containers yet... though when we may have a bit of a warm spell [50-60's] it's not long enough to get them going... and then we are back freezing again. I bet we hit 70 today... i spent the day outside and i'm beat. [and my back is killing me]

though i may WS more tomorrow... i bought one of those big rubbermaid totes i plan to fill with nursery pots.

Terese

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi Elaine,
Great pics! I know that some people say that boys shouldn't be called "beautiful", but Aiden really is a beautiful child and Otis is beautiful, too! Happy belated b-day by the way. Sorry I didn't catch it yesterday (it was yesterday, right?)

Tonya

Havelock, Canada

Tonya and Terese - Big Thanks. Yes. My birthday, "ouch" was yesterday.

I have been told that Aiden is pretty. That is okay with me. I don't get caught up in the terms. As long as someone doesn't say he is butt-ugly or something to that extent.

I will show you another picture of Aiden that was taken about 1 1/2 weeks ago while Aiden was here.

Terese. The baby that Otis ripped out was a Passion Flower. I chilled them, soaked them, put them in good starting mix and only had one germinate out of 15 seeds. I was so disappointed but had high hopes for this one little sprout. You know the rest of the story. I am never going to get suckered into buying something that say, "for experienced gardeners." What a farce. Made me feel so inadequate.

Thanks for the feedback about when to stop sowing. I bought more seeds today - I can't help it. I am a seed addict. I still haven't planted all the ones I wanted to get planted.

I am going to head upstairs to play in the dirt and do some more WSing.

Here is the pic of Aiden. I think he is pretty adorable but he is my only grandchild.

Hugs and Blessings

What a cutie!!!

Havelock, Canada

Thanks! I can't remember why his chin was dirty but oh well. He is a kid and my mother always said, "A dirty kid is a happy kid." Meaning, they were busy getting into something and having fun,

Terese - Otis came from Everson, WA but his good Samaritan was from CA. We had a handler take Otis for last minute required vet check and cross the border then on a plane from Vancouver to Toronto.

Hugs Elaine and Otis

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OH Elaine... when i put "CA" i meant Canada, not California.

I just recall all the photos of ALL those puppies.

Havelock, Canada

Terese - Sorry. I misunderstood. It sure was a nail-biting time though.

Hugs and Blessings

BTW - Otis says hi to Bud

Elaine and Otis

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

He is a doll! And I can't believe Otis is only 15 months. He looks very mature! My dog is almost 4 years old, and she still has that rascally puppy gleam in her eye.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I always sow my dahlia seeds in February. This is the first time that I started my tubers this early though. I wanted larger plants come May. I'm not so sure it was a good thing though. Time will tell.

Corrales, NM(Zone 7a)

I have some seeds of the Dahlia unwin too, but hadn't planted them out yet. I will have to get on that. :) I haven't ever had Dahlias before.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I love them. Bishop's children is a great border variety. They don't get big and work well in the middle of the bed.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

Adorable baby (love those fat baby cheeks!) and a beautiful golden. We had a golden who died a few years ago, my heart was broken. Best, most affectionate dog I ever had. My favorite breed.

There's still probably time to sow most perennials in Canada. Some seeds do need several months of cold strat, but that far north there's probably a lot of cold time left. Things that don't really need cold strat can be sown anytime, all year long. And really fresh seeds often don't need their usual cold period to break dormancy. Columbine is a good example. It can take several months of cold to germinate them, but if really fresh, just falling naturally from the plant, they can germinate immediately.

And then many don't need a cold period at all, and wintersowers start them any time of year.

Karen

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

critter, I've had Husker's Red seed around the garden, and my seedlings look like the parent. You may see the occasional green leaved offspring, but all those I found had the dark leaves.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Neal, that's exactly what I was hoping! *fingers crossed*

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Here's a new thread --> http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/960226/
