Ardesia. That Nuccio's Pearl is just exquisite! I have one that has sported and it has pink spots on it.

I really think if any flower deserves a separate forum it is camellias - but it is a Southern plant although I don't know why every one would not want to look at them!

It all depends on the no. of people willing to participate and keep it going.

I think Nuccio's Pearl, Prof. Sargeant, and Pink Perfection are must haves for any camellia collection. Also Bob Hope.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks, I LOVE Camellias. Interesting comment about them being "southern plants" that I would I have had to agree with until recently. I think the president of the American Camellia Society is from CA and I just watched a TV program on one of the largest collections of Camellias which is in CA. Doesn't Monrovia grow many of their camellias in CA and the Pacific Northwest?

Greensboro, AL

yes SOUTHERN and WESTERN! Check out my article above. I first encountered camellias in an abandoned garden at the San Diego Zoo that had been built for the 1909 Panamanian Exposition.

I was hooked when I found them again in Alabama in antebellum (pre-Civil War) gardens. They really are long-lived plants.

Coushatta, LA

Gloria125,how many pictures do you have on Camellias?

Greensboro, AL

Rose Girl. Unfortunately I do not have a camera. The photos in the article from from Plant Files. I have a few scans of blooms blooming right now.

I rescued a gal. Niccio's Pearl at WM, almost down to it's last green stem, priced slashed to a dollar! Niccio revived from that indifference from the staff.
This is my favorite, Betty Scheffield. Tri color, white, pink and red.
And yes, LK, just like brugmansias, they can be pretty pricey! I paid $35 for this one about 3 years ago.

She is a beauty too Jaye thanks for sharing it.

This one always blooms for Valentine's Day. Im not sure what it is. Its one of the old one's that was at my 100 year old house when I bought it.

This is a scan of blossoms blooming today.

Gloria,it looks like a Apollo, but not for sure.

Greensboro, AL

it is an anemone form like Prof Sargeant but not as full in the center. Im sure it is quite old - 1940s or so.

Coushatta, LA

This is what made me think it was a Apollo, because sometimes blotched white on it.

Coushatta, LA

Gloria,i scanned these pages hope they help. These are the ones i have listed above. Each name on the list follows the picture going up and down,NOT ACROSS.CLICK ON THE PICTURE SO YOU CAN SEE IT BETTER.

There is a slight white blotch on this one, but I think that is a result of genetic sporting. Most of the blooms have no white - and no exposed stamens in the center.

Many of the old camellias here do sport - there will be all white blooms and one branch with red and white blooms.

Yes that one looks like it.

I wish I could find the breeding information. The ACS doesn't even list it.

Coushatta, LA

I know sweetie that is why i was fighting for us to get a forum going. So we could get information from people who has it.or tell what we know.

Coushatta, LA

All we can do is keep this thread going maybe just maybe they will open their eyes.

Greensboro, AL

I hope we get it - and I hope people will use it for that purpose. There are a lot of blanks on the information pages in Plant Files.

And . . . there are a lot of old camellias that who knows any more what they are.

Coushatta, LA

So do i sweetie.I know that their is not enough information in the plantfiles. That is why i scanned those pages so people could fine the name or picture.

Coushatta, LA

Gloria, keep posting i will get back on tonight after my son goes to bed.

Greensboro, AL

What is the catalog that you scanned, Rose Girl?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

There is a project going on right now at Magnolia Gardens in Charleston, SC where they are trying to build a data base and map the really old (over 100yrs.) camellias around the country. It sounds so interesting. I have a tiny plant, just a rooted cutting really, of one of the original camellias from Middleton Place, also in Charleston. The parent plant is said to be from the 1700's.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

That sounds interesting. I need to find the spot that mine is going to occupy. My front yard is east facing so it gets morning sun. I lost my really big oak tree in 2003. So my shade comes from the house and a neighbors trees. I have a magnolia planted and another shade tree on the other side of the yard. But its not very big yet. Its been in the ground about a year, so maybe this year it'll do some above ground growing. I hope so my electric bills are outrageous!

Darla

Coushatta, LA

Gloria,it is a Garden Book Shrubs and Climbers.

Coushatta, LA

Ardesia, that is very interesting. It would be real neat to find Camellia's from that time.

Coushatta, LA

Gloria, this is the front of the book.

Looks like a good basic book - especially if it has camellia apollo. There was not that much in the Google search and most of that was hype not substance.

Yes. I would like to see some kind of program for propagating the old camellias.

They are disappearing so fast. There used to be a lot in the old cemetery here (1830s) but the city turned the care of the cemetery over to the prisoners and the chopped up all of the camellias - plus turned over some of the tomb stones. great idea, City Fathers!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Is there an online Camellia cultivar database or listing? If so, that could be used to fill in the missing information in PlantFiles. I looked, but I didn't find one. So far there's less than 400 cultivars in PlantFiles, and if we worked together we could fix them up pretty quickly, as well as add the missing ones.
