Thanks y'all!
Tubby I am really excited over this and am trying to get thebest out of the bales I can. So far I havent been dissapointed!
Jnette, I put an organic fertilizer by Miracle grow , on them about 2 weeks ago. Other than that it has been strictly bales on top of horse compost!
Digger.... Hmmmmm, Im NEVER out of trouble!!! Hee hee! Thats what keeps me going!

Good Mornin' Y'all, Well this good Saturday morning I have tiny new Grape Tomatoes starting out. All covered with rain from last night!

I couldnt get a really good pic of my Yellow Squash. We had a lot of wind when a front moved through last night, My plants got knocked over , so Im hoping the sun will help them right themselves today. Im not going to force them, I dont want to break any stems.

Potatoes are blooming! Here are the purple blooms.... I think these are the White pototoes.

My only problem ( that I know of ,right now) is that Im worried about all this rain and dampness. My potatoes are starting to show signs next to the bales, of possible mildew or Mushy leaves. I am trying to keep the leaves off the bales , hoping this will let them "air" out a little. I have to be really careful so as not to break any of them! It is still very cool at night when it rains, then "whoooosh", the temps soar up to the High 80's with direct hot sun , so it gets rather steamy on the bales.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

O K.. A lesson well learned....... Do Not plant Squash plants near the sides of the bales.
Be sure to center them. They apparently need those big stems and leaves to help support themselves, and I planted them on the edges of my bales.... Disastrous!!!! My Yellow squash cant take even the slightest wind. I have to right them constantly. They have become heavy with small fruit and the sunshine cant help them stand straight any longer!! Pics this afternoon.

Eufaula, is there a way you can put something under them to hold them up? Not sure, maybe a partial bale, or something like that? What a shame. But, I guess that is what this is about. Learning.

Eufaula: good reminder! Squash and zucchini need to be in the CENTER of the bales for sure.

Dahlonega, GA

Oofie , Some of mine turned last year , and the longer they grew , the more they straightened out . Maybe all isn't lost . I did straighten them out somewhat , but the new growth was straight . digger

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Everything seems ok this morning. My Squash are upright and growing. They lost a few branches but seem to be able to stand up just fine for now. I will know better next time to center them.

Dahlonega, GA

When they grow off the edge of the bale and hit the ground for a foot or two , I think it'll happen again . Mine did , but didn't hurt them . Maybe you can stake them with sticks . digger

Wake Forest, NC

The bales will sag, of course, as time goes by, so it's not uncommon for squash and zucchini to droop over the sides, depending on whether any fruit is pulling them that way.

IMHO I'd just let them take their own course and not risk damaging them trying to reposition them or staking, etc.

Dahlonega, GA

Mine will do it again . I'll leave them alone this time if you think it's ok . I don't see why it wouldn't be . thanks , kent . digger

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Yep they seem alright but a little "antigoggled" ( one of Granma's words). Look as if they are about to slide downhill!

I definitely quit trying to "help Out"! I was breaking off and damaging more than helping!

So in a couple of days I should be able to harvest a few Zuchini and squash. Ive got the sautee pan ready and onions ready to chop. Hm Hmm gooooood!
I think this is a good time to end this thread, and start another about the harvesting to come! This thread got longer than I thought it would! Wheeeewwww! But that goes to prove how many helpful wonderful people there are out there!
