Got my bales in yesterday .First treatment today and gonna try Romas and Sweet Million . Uffie , you got the jump on me . I found fescue for 2.75 and got 10 bales . The young man even brought them within 7 miles and offered to deliver them all the way. Oh, these country boys are sweet. digger

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

WOW!! $2.75 and delivered! You racked up Digger! Hmmmm, too bad I dont know any country boys around here! LOL!!!
With these 7 bales full, I really need at least 12 more bales. I even put in some Beauregard Sweet 'taters this afternoon, so no more room at all now!

Weve had a lot of rain but summer is coming so Im getting ready! I got a great deal at Wally world yesterday They had the 25 ft sprinkler type hoses for only $5.00. I brought one home to try it out and its great. I just have to remember to not turn the water on full, just a trickle works best.
I experimented with it by draping it over head to see how well it works. Ive decided to get some coated wire and attach the hose to the aluminum frame. facing the holes of course towards the bales. I plan to go all around the frame with it! It makes the most wonderful mist, so it soaks right into the bales without runoff.

Eufaula, I have always said there is nothing like regular water to any plant. Yours obviously love the new watering system. They look great!! Ok, come on Sally, I finally got my bales too and have them going. However, we got a hail storm today so I do not think I am really late. Our last frost date is the end of this month.

2:30 am and can't sleep , so I'll get my dg fix . Gosh those are great pics uffie,Your getting in the groove !
Jnette , mine are just now all planted . My bales were at 110/115 degrees and wouldn't cool down . I finally dug holes in them and put some soil packed in the bottom .All this time I've had them , I've had to put them in 5" pots and sweet millions went into tall drink cups , then grew so tall that I cut the bottom out of another cup and inverted it over them and filled with potting soil . The roots are going to be14" deep on them . Wheew . Went today and got Black Diamond watermelon, but will have to put those in ground , don't have enough bales

Just let my little dog out and the moon is beautiful tonight . digger

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sally, how do you get a hole that deep in your bales? Jeanette

Dahlonega, GA

Jnette , I ask dh to go down with a chainsaw on the inside of the strings . Just a plunge ,as deep as you want , and cut about 6" long and cut like that , It's easy to pull out . digger

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Sally. Hopefully tomorrow. I sorted out and gave 4 flats of annuals to my niece today. After all that I am tired and I do have a lot of new space on my shelves for the plants I kept to grow and to pot them in bigger pots. They are really getting big and the weather is not cooperating.

Jeanette

Dahlonega, GA

Maybe you can hold them awhile , just repot so the roots can keep growing . that's what I had to do . When I put them out , they were well on the way . digger

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, and now that I got rid of 4 flats of plants I have the room to repot mine. LOL, guess she will have to do the same. It is about 3 weeks too early.

Sally, how many cuts does he make with the saw? One along the inside of each string? I wonder if my dh saw is too big. He has 3 or 4, but no small ones.

Jeanette

Dahlonega, GA

J , with the string on the ground , like Kent says , DH makes four cuts to the bale , that gives a place to plant two tomatoes . Visually divide the bale in half , two cuts opposite , just inside the string , on one half and the same on the other half.that will give about a six inch square to dig out , on each half with the ends cut .The cuts will parallel the string . If you can't picture it , I'll take a series of pictures tomorrow and post .I dug out deep holes then with my fist , packed them down inside ,added dirt , then planted deep , packing more dirt around each tomato .I can plant other stuff in between ,that doesn't require such deep holes . The bale is loosened now and it won't be hard to pry holes for other crops . Will probably plant more spinach in the shade of the tomatoes , 'cus I like it in salads , cooked with ham , or anything you can put it in .Can't get enough of it . digger

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Yes, Sally, I see what you are saying. Sounds good. I haven't done much to my bales, except they have a cup of fertilizer and lots of water. I will check tomorrow and see if they are heating up at all. Our weather is finally starting to warm up so that should help. I'm thinking that maybe I will have DH put the visquine on the hoop house so that should help warm the bales too.

I just thought of something. The cattle panels curve over the bales. I bet he won't have room to cut the bales with the saw. I wonder if we can pull them out a bit and then put them back without having them fall apart after they are cut. We'll see.

Dahlonega, GA

If the panels are high enough to walk around the bales, they should be o.k. to use chain saw .They are probably too heavy to try to move , don't think they'll fall apart , but I wouldn't try it . We decided to cut our bales next year b/4 we wet them. It is easier to cut dry than wet .You might just try cutting your slots real close together in center, might be easier to get chain saw in that way . Let me know how you do it and what works for you . digger

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Wheeeeeew! Just reading all that Made me tired!!! LOL! I sure am glad I got mine into the bales early and the weather cooperated!
My biggest worry now is keeping the Rabbits at bay with the wire fencing I place around my bales! Of course , good Ole Diesel's bark helps out a lot with that!

Oh and Happy Mother's Day Everyone!!!
