The thought of "froo froo girls just sitting around doing their nails" is a perfect description for some chickens! That made me laugh out loud!
Your Opinion on Your Breeds
silkiechick wrote;"to my knowledge can not be traced back to one specific breeder or group of breeders but i have seen many people try to take the credit for creating them for the same work."
Wow. My apologies. I was not trying to give ANYONE credit for "creating" them. As I said "they were the first place I ever heard of showgirls. Don't know if that was where they originated,"
I was so glad to hear about them again. Now I'm sure sorry I asked. Didn't mean to ruffle feathers, I'll stick to the other forums from now on, I guess.
Catmad! NO no! Don't go anywhere! She didn't mean it to come off that way. Please don't stick to other forums! We love all chicken-heads here! I think Silkiechick might have just been saying that nobody maybe knows for sure where they originated. It doesn't matter though, they're lovely!
No ruffled feathers anywhere around here (except for the ones on my ducks who are having a bath right now).
I agree Cat.. I believe silie was trying to set the record straight and clear.. and leave no stone unturned.. It is so hard to do that and not sound snobish.. sorry silkie, but tryin to stand up for ya here.. not that you need standing up for.. just that, I LOVE your explaination..
I have been trying to understand "Kinder Goats" and your explaination of the showgirls made the goats clear as a bell to me!
So catmad.. PLEASE.. go back.. reread what she said once again.. only this time put a teachers voice to it.. it really will sound different.. and educational.
no reason to appoligize and leave u didn't ruffle any feathers here. sorry if it came off that way, i love talking chickens and i wasn't saying you personally i don't even know u, sorry i should have specified that better. yes, we love all chicken-heads and hatchaholics here and all r welcome.
yes mox that was one of my points.
oh fran, lol u hit it right on too and thank u. yes it was ment to educate not to sound snobish, lol i am very far from snobish so please i hope u all never think that of me, i sooo did not mean to sound that way and if it did i appoligize it was not my intentions in any way.
there was another bigger point also but it was totally missed, i don't want to post and have it taken wrong again so i will leave it at that.
silkie
Silkie, I really appreciate the explanaiton! I had no idea what a "showgirl" was. I thought we were talking chickens in Vegas! You really helped me out. I am very sorry that catmad got upset. As we discussed before, some folks are more sensative. I hope mad will come back. Come back..........Come back............ please...........we like people who are strange like us and love our feather footed friends......Come Back...........
(sssshhhh your not supposed to tell folks were strange ssssshhhhh)
Secrets out!!! ;) straaaaange!!
I'm stranger than you are! Nanny nanny poo poo!
Speaking of strange, I believe my gold laced cochin rooster to be my strangest breed. He does a lot more dancing than any of the other roosters (the dropped wing dance and the food's over here dance) and he runs in circles around the hens a lot. He is also the only roo that doesn't seem to make the hens squeal during the "business" portion of their relationship. I think he must be more gentle or something. Oh, and he also does fake runs at me, and then veers off at the last minute.
Claire i'd watch that roo he sounds like he has intentions on being aggressive towards you.
Oh dear now everyone knows how strange we are i hope they don't go running and screaming
Well I know now that I will fit right in!!!!!!!!
Wren, so you have strange tendancies too? We go off the deep end from time to time. So put on your floaties!!
I have been off the deep end probable more than all you. My motto is "I am purposely insane"!!!! LOL
I have always said, be that best at whatever you are. Strive, Strive, Strive, to be the ultimate "whatever"! (It's the type A personality thing, don't care what you are, the world needs varitey, but be the best one you can be!)
Marans!!! What can I say, as Frans stated I can't keep enough eggs around. Mine are pretty friendly but I spend a lot of time with them.
Spangled Hamburg: AKA the old bitty. a real screamer at any hen laying in her nest. And at me also If I want her egg.
Golden Campines: beautiful birds lay small white eggs, very quiet but skittish.
Lakenvelders: Screamers also, but beautiful birds and great flyers, small whites.
Blue Andalusians: Beautiful birds, quiet, lay small whites
Polish Crested: very docile, lousy egg layers, want to be pampered and are always under my feet. never again.
Crevecoeurs: extremely docile, good layers, small white and want to be held or so it seems, constantly flying on to my shoulders. They are beautiful birds I would recommend to anyone who really wants a pet.
Adding about my Australorps: They really seem to like flying as of late! Soaring right over the coop and pen.
I fit in here just fine... I am strange...
as for the chickens, I have not had many kinds, just the rocks of last year and the ROO was mean but the girls were laying medium size eggs. They were not too friendly but I chalk that up to where I got them from.
This year I have the Ameraucana babies and I agree with frans, they are cute and turn to look at you when you talk. I handle them every day so they get use to it. I cant wait for the colored eggs...
I love the Americanas too, very sweet hens, not so much for the roos, they are very mean to the girls. I love barred rocks too. I have a very talkie one who constantly yaps at me when I am outside. My favorite for laying and personality are the Americanas and Marans. But I love the Faverolles. They are so very sweet and cute.
Here is my gorgeous wooster wooster. He is an Ameracauna. He was supposed to be hen, but turned out to be a rooster, and what a rooster. Funny, too because he almost seemed like a runt in size compared to the hens as a chick.......I have another rooster that does the wing down dance and such.......he's also had some ups and downs, like being attacked by opossums - very mean now, and who could blame him? Anyway, I know this thread is about breeds, but my Ameracauna and I have a great bond. Yes, he loves the girls well, but he also does his job. He looks tall into the feeder when I walk in the coop because he knows that's where new feed comes from, and then he clucks and shows the girls where to get the food. He used to be a ball of fluff in my palm, and now I pick him up every day and tell him how gorgeous he is!
I must have a Maran. Even before this thread I wanted those dark brown eggs! Also, I only have one, but New Jersey Giants seem to be very very sweet.
I'm planning to build a chicken house and get some chicks this spring. I haven't had chickens since I was young, but I remember how much I loved them. I would like some advice for a small house suitable for 4 chickens, 1 rooster and 3 hens, and a large good egg laying breed with a protective but friendly rooster, that are also cold hardy. I was thinking about Rhode Island Reds.
Eleisn, good choice. RIReds are an excellent all around breed. They are friendly and good layers! "You chose well Obiwan!" sorry, just watched star wars for the bazillionth time.
Fauna4Flora - what a gorgeous boy! He's so handsome! I love the name Wooster - I might use it here!
Elleisn - I'm curious - why do you want the rooster? Do you want the hens to hatch baby chicks? It just occurs to me that if you want a house for 4 chickens, it sounds like you want to start small. Why not just go with 4 hens? They will all lay wonderful eggs and be quieter without the roo, and even though the eggs won't be fertile (i.e. they won't hatch into chicks) they will be great eating eggs. Also, you won't end up with more than you wanted. If you are having the rooster for protection....well....what are you protecting them from? The rooster isn't all that effective against most predators. RIR is a great breed choice! I have quite a few RIR and they lay lovely eggs and regularly too! The roosters do get frostbite quite easily on their combs, at least mine did.
Thank you, Cmoxon! Funny thing is, wooster is my pet name, sort of like when we call the cat kitten-itten or the dog puppa-duppa. His actual name is Robyn.
Elleisn, good luck with acquiring some chickens.....they are really so much to have around, and I agree for some of us it's going back to our roots to have them around.
LOL, yes, we call our Greyhound Stickley by the name of "big nose" sometimes. :-)
I also call Butterscotch "bunny wunny."
I call my horse Thund'r "Tundr Wondr" cause is wonderful to me...
I guess I just want to get another rooster. My rooster was my best friend when I was 12, and I guess I just wanted an excuse to get another one.
Ah, well that makes sense then! I hope you find a friendly one! I have an RIR rooster who is a honey, but not all of them are. I wish you lived closer, I would send you some RIR chicks that I have! They're about 6 weeks old. I know somebody who drives to Denver regularly. If you are interested, let me know!
I'm going to start building our chicken house tomorrow. I have placed an order for 4 chicks due about early april. I am not ready for them yet, but thank you very much. I would appreciate any advice on how to insulate a chicken house, a small one.
Elleisn ~ who are you ordering from that they will ship a small quantity? I am interested in only a few also...
www.mypetchicken.com will ship 3, although they encourage at least 5.
Thank you ~ I will check that link out.
Great info on that site... Thanks!
I guess I am too rural tho and may have to find someone local to split an order with...
How to determine the best minimum for you:
Our smallest order size of 3 chicks applies to major cities only, such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Portland OR, etc., due to the speed with which they can be delivered. If you live within 30 minutes of a major city, the best minimum is 5 chicks. For any town or rural area that is more than 30 minutes from a major city, our minimum is 8 chicks. This is to protect the chicks due to increased time in transit. If you are ordering Bantams, we strongly recommend that you add two chicks to any of the above quantities. We love our babies too much to let anything happen to them!
I maybe need to check with the local feed stores too.
it's great to see new people posting and getting into chickens. u will love and enjoy raiseing them and there is alot of good hatcheries out there. mpc is a great one for wanting small orders most require min of 25 chicks.
best of luck and welcome to the poultry world!!
silkie
Podster, definitely try the local feed stores, too. If possible, you may not want chicks from a "straight run." That means that the chicks have not been sexed and you don't know whether you are getting hens or roosters.
Some feed stores will order what chicks you want and you can pick them up there. You might could get them to split and order with you ours will do that here ^_^
If I can decide what "flavor" I want and get a friend to agree, we can split an order too. He has ordered quantities in the past but am not sure if his house is full right now. Definitely prefer hens. I don't mind the roosters but really don't intend to have setters.
I got my 6 this year from the feed store, they are awesome. When they get the next shipment in next month, I am going back for 6 more... LOL Reasonable too and dont have to worry about the shipping and I get to pick them out.
Are they sexed?
congrats on ur 6 new babies and can't wait to see pics!! what breed of little cuties did ya get and what r the next ones ya get gonna be?
