Thanks, y'all!!!!! The day got off to a rough start (dog crossed paths with a skunk), but I'm sure the rest of the day will be great!

EEEK! Tomato juice bath? Makes a pink dog for a bit though.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Yes, I did, and yes, it turned my large white dog a strange shade of pink wherever it touched. I couldn't get it all out (and it doesn't really take the smell out), so when I marched her into PetSmart, everyone who didn't know why she was there thought she had blood on her.

It was a gruesome sight, but I actually thought she looked more like a punk rocker than an extra from a horror flick ;o)

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

At least the tomato juice will wash out--when my dog got skunked a few years ago I did the peroxide/baking soda/dish soap bath as well as tomato juice, and his mostly black coat ended up with some reddish highlights from the peroxide that lasted for quite a long time! Not a very fun birthday present though!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That is way too funny LOL

Happy birthday!! And yes, thanks for all you do here! It doesn't go unnoticed ... And sorry about your dog. Maybe the rest of the day will be a blessed one. :-)

Oh, Liz...I hadn't thought about the side effects of peroxide on a darker hair color, but of course that makes sense. Okay, at least she'll be a pretty girl when she comes home.

They warned me she'd probably still have a light odor even with their best efforts; for the next 3-4 months anytime she gets wet, the smell will be noticeable. Sigh....

Thanks for all the warm wishes! The sun is shining and most everything is right with the world, except for the pooch's predicament ;o)

Hey Terry,

Hope you had a great day today. Happy Birthday to you!!!

If you notice some smell, one thing I did with my dog was spray some Febreze on a paper towel and then wipe him down with that. It definitely helped temporarily, although afterwards I had to switch to a different Febreze scent because I associated that one with skunk smell! LOL

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LOL ecrane. I don't think anything is permanent (sorry Terry :() Especially when they get wet. Fortunately though its toned down enough to tolerate. I always think if it's bad for us think about the poor dog with that incredibly sensitive sense of smell!!!

So why can't they smell the skunk at a good distance away, and STEER CLEAR????

chuckle...

Thanks for the Febreeze tip--we may have to try it. Despite the groomer's efforts, we can still smell it strong enough I banished the dog from our bedroom last night, and probably will for several nights. (She sleeps here-and-there in the house anyway, so it's not terribly traumatic for her to not be able to sleep in the spot at the foot of our bed for a while.)

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Terry, maybe you can hang one of those Pine Tree air freshener thingies on her collar/around her neck that people use in cars. (And if you hang one on her tail every time she wags it'll perfume the air, eh?)

I feel for ya! And the dog! (I wonder how the skunk felt about things.)

Chuckle...yeah, that would be a sight, wouldn't it? The cat is going nutsy trying to cover up any areas she thinks she smells skunk.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

That po' po' cat, another neurotic creature in the makings!

Po' cat? Harrumph. Fat, spoiled cat, more like it. (She's not my cat; I'm merely the lowly caretaker while DS is at school...I'm charged with keeping the food bowl topped off and the litterbox empty ;o)

Neurotic yes, but I don't think I've ever met a non-neurotic feline.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ya what is with that? I can sniff a skunk a mile away but the supposedly sniffer-enhanced dogs and cats just HAVE to wander on over to check it out. I've had to deskunk both a dog and a cat on two separate occasions in my lifetime so I think both species are a tad challenged in the skunk department. Anyhoo glad to see you kept your sense of humour throughout the mishapTerry and hopefully had a great B-Day.
