Daily Pics - Vol 177

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

After Resin's wonderful start to the last thread and all the beautiful birds featured it's time to start a new one.

Here's a goldfinch from my garden, they really love the niger seed.

Nice pic Knip! Thanks for starting the new thread!

I once had a pair of European goldfinches for pets. Disaster. They were not happy and I soon lost them to a respiratory disease. As far as I'm concerned they should not be caged. I still feel guilty. They were stunning to look at though.

Thanks Pelle, I love the Chickadee! They are so cute, wish I had some here (you always want what you can't have).

I'm dissappointed I have not seen many Goldfinch this winter. I even bought a thistle feeder and recently took it down since nothing has been eating from it. After having so many last year, I figured they would be back this year. I had a group of several stop by for a couple of days early winter and since then, none.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

thanks for the new thread Knip, Your goldfinch is really nice.
Ah those buntings are such cute birds, and like the Mockingbird too.
Only shot of the Chickadee, but a cute one at that. Pelle and that Goldfinches on the branches so sweet looking. Thanks for your comment on the other thread.

Starlings are not my favorite, but they do make good pictures sometimes.

Nice pics burn!

That first pic is nice showing the size difference between the redpoles and grosbeak.

PERTH, Australia

GP, I feel I should warn you that with so many Cedar Waxwings around, you just might get a visit from a lady named dellrose, who'll be armed with a cardboard box and a very large net.

Likewise, Burn, keep a watch on your Redpolls, and an eye out for a Mrs Ed, who'll be similarly armed (and very dangerous)

Good morning, Fellow Birders! burn_2007, thanks for your comment on the photo of "The Virginia" Waxwings." I see where they are also in Florida, so Resin was right: they are moving around. Here is another pic of our inkberry eaters. Blessings to all.

Nice pics, everyone. For those that have never witnessed the sight or heard the noise of Snow Geese taking off have missed an awesome experience. I came across a large flock of them yesterday that were offshore at some distance. All it took was an eagle or two to fly low over the flock to get their attention. This photo represents about 5% of the geese that were in the air at one time.

Linthicum, that photo of the geese is incredible! We hear them when they fly over the lake, but they're never close to the number in your photo. Bet it was hard to hear anything else. How exciting for you.

Wbbirdwoman, love your Waxwings. We still have a couple flocks here for me to enjoy.

Nanny, love your Nuthatch pix. They're sure cute.

Great pictures everyone.

This Cedar Waxwing looked cute in the neighbor's apple tree.

Never have seen Snow Geese..hope to add them to the list someday tho.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I had some friends who went to Canada and said that when Canadians pronounce Snow Geese, it sounds like "Snoogies". So I forever call them Snoogies!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

OMG Linth, that's the best bald eagle shot yet. I've got to go find one around here! The Snoogies don't look real.

Duc, always love your shots, but forgot to mention in the last thread how great that mockingbird was. I can't believe how well you captured its eye.

Here's a little Blue-headed Vireo in a tangle of branches. He came with a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a Pine Warbler and an Orange-crowned warbler, but I didn't get any decent pics of them! The kinglet flew out of 4 of the 5 pics that I took.

I'm just picking my jaw up off the floor! That geese photo is stunning, I can't imagine what something like that must be like to actually witness for real.

Great pics everyone!

Huge goose flocks are very special* . . . try Budle Bay at the start of October

Resin

* as long as they're not at the end of New York airport runway!

Right! One year I traveled to Quebec where they line the coast of the St. Laurence River on both sides and make lots of noise, hang out, and fly a few feet overhead. Snoogies everywhere! It was wonderful. I also saw them mixed into a huge flock of sandhill cranes in Wilcox Playa in AZ in 1998. And a few on the coast (Massachusetts) in 2000.
