What Happened to Pixamo

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

The website doesn't work and it's been removed from the forums too.

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

I seem to remember getting a message pertaining to this but can not remember if it came from Dave or Pixamo. I only had a few photos uploaded and did not bother retrieveing them at the time as I had them saved else where. They (Pixamo) are no longer in business as you have found out.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

That's weird, I never got a message about it. Fortunately all my pics that I had uploaded there were still on my hard drive so I didn't lose anything.

North Augusta, ON

I got an e-mail from the folks at Pixamo....they gave us all like a month to remove our photos if we needed to. It was quite a while ago.

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

ecrane I wonder if the message ended up in your spam file?

It was unfortunate that they went out of business. It was great they made contact to inform folks...but unfortunate for those that did not get the message.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Previous messages from them came through fine and didn't go to spam, but even if this one did end up in the spam folder I still would have seen it--I get non-spam messages dumped in there on a regular enough basis that I always go through and look at what's in there before it gets deleted. As long as the email address it came from or the subject line had "Pixamo" in it I would have seen it.

Sioux City, IA(Zone 4b)

guess they did not do a good job informing everyone

ecrane3, that's odd that you didn't get the message...

As has been said, we shuttered pixamo quite some time ago but I don't know anything at all about why. I'm sure there was a good reason, though, as my colleagues here don't do anything without a very good reason.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

It's always possible I accidentally deleted it, I get a ton of email so chances are I've accidentally deleted something at least once or twice. It's no big deal either way, all my pics are saved on my computer so I didn't lose anything.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I didn't get notification either and I also check my spam. That's too bad. I really enjoyed the concept, although there were still some bugs with it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't get any notice. It doesn't matter because my pics are on my hard drive, too. That was a lot of work we did uploading a lot of pictures.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I did get the notice. It was several months ago, as threegardeners said.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I didn't get any notice either.
I am on 3 other picture sites anyways.

Sebastopol, CA(Zone 9a)

I was notified and greatly appreciated the notification.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Well, this is distressing news! I did not recieve a notice and had moved all my pictures there from Webshots and closed that account. About half my pictures were not backed up and are now lost. I can't blame them though. I knew I should have backed them up on my external drive and just never got around to it. I guess I just have to chalk it up to one of life's lessons learned the hard way. I don't have the energy to stamp my feet and cry over it these days.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

You mean you don't keep them on your computer after you upload to a website? I keep all originals/unedited in one folder, edited & re-sized in other sub-folders for a total of 42,166 images in 933 folder and then have all plant images uploaded here on DG and I also have 3 album sites I use to share images with family & friends and have an external hard drive now for backing up everything. Never put your eggs all in one basket as they say.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have all my pictures (not in files) all over my computer but I have never organized them. I never keep the originals. Once I crop them, then that is the one picture I save.

I am so sorry what happened to you Zanymuse.......that is something that could have happened to me. I don't have time to both garden and fool with the plant picture files.

I have 14,814 personal photos that I keep on my computer.

Zanymuse, I feel awful for your loss. I sent a note to my contacts at NameMedia to ascertain the condition of the servers that formerly hosted Pixamo. There is a VERY slight chance of a recovery but it is extremely slight. They shut it down quite some time ago and I would be very surprised if the data is still around.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Zanymuse that is so sad. I hope Dave can recover them for you. I feel so bad for you. I got the notice also. AOL also dropped their photo online service in December. It must cost too much for them to run it.

How do you guys know how many pictures you have on your computer? Mine are organized by Zoombrowser and I can't find a total.

I have 1.5 terabytes of pictures just about. I am going to need more room very soon. Tom finally backed up most of them to external disc drives but they are not all backed up. He ran out of room. I was going to look into a site called Carbonite. I heard a commercial for it. Anyone use this service?

I was thinking I would like an outside back up in case my computer with the external disc drives got stolen.

Sue, how much room is on your external hard drives? Do the websites you have your pictures on, allow you to upload the original sized ones, or the ones you shrunk? Mine are so big now they eat room! Thanks

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Hubby just bought me a 750 GB external hard drive.
Kell, when I look under My Documents>My Pictures, when I have that folder highlighted and then click under File>Properties, that's where I find the count and size info.
I am gradually going through my original sized ones and only saving the best. I have sold a few images here and there and they usually want the original size so I won't dump those but I do dump all the name tags once I have them labeled and the blurred or crummy composition ones of course.
The websites I have them on do allow full size, of course, it eats up the room of the free sites like Picasa (can be upgraded with paid membership) and Flickr (also can be upgraded) but I also have my favorite site called SmugMug. Nice site, can also list images for sale, haven't done that yet.

Hebron, KY

I didn't get a message either.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I found it! That is so cool Sue. My pics are divided over 3 drives. It only showed C drive. I didn't see how to switch it to D and E drives to count those too. My C drive has 73,178 files and 2,299 folders. So are the files really pictures? I only have pictures on that drive. Shoot, 73 thousand pictures. If I triple for the 3 drives that it is 219 thousand pictures. Most of which need to be deleted. LOL. Some days I spend hours deleting it seems. I can never keep up.

I should dump my name tags too but every once in awhile PlantFiles has a question and it is nice to have it. Or I want to know where I took it and sometimes the name tag says. Be careful of dumping what you consider not your best. I am always surprised at which pics people want to buy. Not ones I consider my good ones. I sold another one today that was so so.

Tom just told me he got a 1 terabyte and a 500 GB external hard drive. I always thought they would be external as in outside my computer so I could hide them but they are in my computer so if stolen they would be gone too. I should put a note on it asking the robbers to pull them out and leave them on my desk. LOL Not that I have ever had a break in and I would hope my alarm system would save me, but I would just die if all my pictures vanished. I really feel terrible for Zanymouse!

Thanks for all the info, Sue. One of these days I am going to download Picasa on your recommendation.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I think all your images would overwhelm Picasa, it automatically downloads all images found on your computer into its function, in your case, it would take hours!! Maybe you can turn that function off and manually chose what to add.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I was just going to use Picasa for fun. I want to pay for a place to store my photos. When I think of all the time I have spent taking them, a fee is worth it. I think you get better service if the site makes money so to keep you it wants you happy. Otherwise they need you to buy copies or some how spend money to keep them in business.

I found a blog where people are all talking about storage sites and Carbonite got trashed. So forget that one. Mozy got rave reviews.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

SmugMug has some excellent reviews, some are a couple of years old and the site has upgraded considerably since those reviews:

http://www.epinions.com/content_189483748996 Make sure to read their In Conclusion comments

I have a different theme background (mine are just different colors) for each album.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Dave, if the pictures can be recovered it would be wonderful but please do not feel bad. I have been alive long enough to realize that I was foolish to have failed to keep them safe on my own. To have placed blind faith in the survival of a fledgling website was unwise. LOL who said age brings wisdom? Well, I am older now and have had another life lesson to make me wiser ;~}

(Zone 1)

Thanks Dave.

I didn't get a message from Pixamo either and I'm sad they decided to shut down. I am new to uploading/downloading photo's to anywhere on the net ... had never done it until joining DG and really liked Pixamo. I don't remember what photo's I put on Pixamo and I'm not a good photographer anyway, LOL so it's no big deal about me losing my photo's but I feel bad for Zanymuse and others who may have put so many there and lost those files.
