Virus Warning

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Has anybody else noticed that when you google for any businesses that there is a warning that states this site may cause harm to your Computer?
Even if you type in Davesgarden you get that warning, and when you click on the link, it takes you to a warning page...

Has anybody gotten a virus from any of the business web site links???

I was looking up pics of verbena but when you click on the pics, you get that warning page tooo. so I guess googling is out for now :(

Why can't people be content to use their PC's instead of trying to destroy everybody elses... grrrr

I just used the yahoo search engine and it doesn't give any warnings

I'm getting it too.

Dave, here's the text of the warning:

But I'm thinking it's a google problem, because when I google for a book on amazon, I get this different message. And I know that Amazon wouldn't deny me and my credit card access. :)

Whatever the problem was, it appears to not be happening now.

Twitter is all a flurry with this story, due to the fact that it has great potential to slow business down dramatically for a lot of folks. One person said that googles malware provider went down. I'm sure it is just a matter of time for them to resolve this and get back up and running properly.

Maybe it already is, didn't read Joans post first time.

BE very careful...We got the virus about 2 weeks ago. Our computer has Norton and updates ever 1.5 days BUT there is 2 small windows of time you can get infected, even with good anti-virus software.
The first small window is by the time Anti-virus software companies are made aware of the virus, and a 'patch' is made.....AND the 2nd small window of time is how long it takes you to update those definitions or 'patches'. I believe it was a window that looked VERY much like 'WINDOWS' that got us....it said it suspected a virus and it needed to do a scan! THATS THE SCAM......Windows does not notify you of a possible infection, your anti-virus software will somehow flag you, remember that! If you see these 'WINDOWS, window', click the X in the upper right hand corner ALWAYS, do NOT hit their 'cancle' button because it will STILL infect you with some type of virus.
In our case it was called a 'Redirecting' virus, when we would do a search on Yahoo, google, dogpile, any search engine....things would come up pertaining to our seach BUT the website it was going too had NOTHING to do with our search. Dave's Garden led us to some insurance company or off the wall selling site.

The kicker here is...once this virus gets it's foot in your computer, it tells your anti-virus software that it's ok to be in your computer, that it's really not a virus! So when our computer did it's update within 24/48 hours for viruses, it did NOT SEE ANY!
it took us about 5 days to realize SOMETHING was not right. It still cost us $100 from Norton to fix it.
**The best thing is update those patches daily, AND if you see anything 'pop up' other then the anti-virus software you pay for every year, CLICK the X to close out upper right hand corner. Most of these scams will have OK button and a CANCLE button- DO NOT HIT THE CANCLE BUTTON. If you have any questions, please ask, I will try to help.

Google's response. Slow to load because so many people are accessing it, but it basically says that there's nothing to worry about and it's part of their attempt to identify unsafe sites. http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?answer=45449&topic=360&hl=en&ei=EGWESb6YMYaR-gbTu40o&sa=X&oi=malwarewarninglink&resnum=1&ct=help

It also gives Dave, as the webmaster, instructions on how to make the message stop, but I think it already has.

Thanks Joan !

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Whew.. My being computer stupid. I go into mild panic. Can't afford to have to repair mine again. Thanks Joan!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

There's lots of panic going on, worldwide. They really need to put a notice on their home page about this.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

They are now saying that StopBadware.org went down and that is what google uses to detect malware, and this caused all the google searches to return the warning. It's supposed to be fixed now, but I still can't access parts of the badware site.

Yahoo had an extremely active morning because everyone was using that search engine instead of google. :)

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Appreciate the updates. : )

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

You're welcome! I'm going to finally go take a shower now that the crisis appears to be over. :)

Joan, that was very interesting. I sent an email to Google. On that page were the boxes to do a Yahoo search. I found that odd. Or are they connected and I don't know that.
