convolvulus for gardeners
Colin - Are the vines/blooms in the above photo from your garden? If so, I am quite impressed! Very nice species!
Darren - Your I. albivenia is starting to kick into growth high-gear! Looking good!!!
Hi Becky... yes they are growing over the edge of my greenhouse bench... i have some outside... they are doing fine, but the rain has ruined the flowers... :-(
oh I love all those cool flowers and information.. I can't wait to see my setosa bloom, and I love that field bindweed, looks like the whote and pink I have herre in kansas, daughter is going to texas, she is plant hunting for me on the way..
Debra do you have a pic of your Kansas bindweed? i'd love to see it...
that looks pretty Debra... could you save a seed or two for me please?
sure thing , colin.. will show a picture of the other one sun nite.. you mite want that one..
and here are the sepals of Convolvulus chilensis...
these came with the collection #RB94040
they look quite different... the bracteoles(think thas the right term here) are much closer to the sepals and the sepals themselves are relatively longer...
there is also a difference with the leaves... i can't wait untill these buds burst :-)

wow debra i would like that in my yard too. looks pretty and bet alo looks really nice
Colin - Awesome looking vine! Is that a bunch of buds on it that I am seeing??? Love the red background in the photo, too! :-) Love the blooms on both of those vines! Very unusual leaves...
a profile shot... showing sepals and the darker markings along the midribs...
the bracteoles are further away from the sepals now it's in flower.... the difference i was seeing was due to thinking the flowers and therefore the bud/sepals where going to be the same size....

Colin - I really, really like this bloom: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6727471 How pretty!!! Quite interesting the size of the flowers for each cultivar/species. That pink one just really grabbed my attention the minute I saw your photo! Very nice!!
this one here.. is awsome.. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6727481
just thought this was a nice pic showing the colours, shapes and sizes...
top = C chilensis (chileflora)
midle C chilensis (RB94040 plant A)
bottom C sabaticus
the flower of C chilensis RB94040 plant B shown here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6727471
the flower on plant B has larger and more rounded flowers and differently shaped leaves
the picture at the beggining of this post is the one that accompanied the C chilensis RB94040... as you can see the flower is much paler, a very pretty pale rosey pink in real life
Loss my MG's I planted by wall....think the slugs got them.....
Had put some in pots and they are fine...
Glad I have clematis the the slugs don't seem to touch!!
Good job, you did on Convolvulus althaeoides, Colin. Mine haven't grown that well because they are covered up by other MGs.
Martin
Colin - What a great photo! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6767105 I love the comparison of these pretty blooms! Seeing that photo after taking it, must have made your day!!! Great info about these wonderful vines, too! Thanks for sharing all this information with us!
geraldine - Glad to hear some of your potted MGs are doing fine after the slugs slaughtered your other in-ground vines. That is so frustrating. Been there! So sorry.
Martin - When are you moving?
Colin,
Good comparison pic, it give us more information than words!
Becky, I am not sure, I cannot put my friend out on the street. I had given him a job and a place to stay, I need to clarify with the church leadership....
Martin
Debra - Those are totally cool! This one here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6779341 What is it's growing habit? I truly like the look of the bloom and leaves. Very pretty!! I will be very interested to see how the seeds do for you! Are you going to grow them in pots?
going to grow in a spot by the north fence, and in a pot that hangs.. I am saving seeds for everyone.. they are a creeping vining plant, creep if nothing to cling to and climb if they can grab something.. good for ground cover, or for a small show area..the blooms are one inch in diameter.. ( these are) but in the country where we went on our trip, they were almost two inches in diameter and the leaves grew bigger.. the stay open all day and into the evening.. they close when they are ready to pod. That is what I have observed.
Fascinating observations! Thanks for sharing the info and hopefully seeds, too! What fun!
Creeping or climbing seems to be the habit of the Yellow Chinese Evening Glory, too. Looks like I am going to have to transplant it into a bigger pot with some taller stakes/supports. It's beginning to look like "Chinese MGs gone wild!" lol Must be typically of many wild species. :-)
