which ones are you growing and what are they like as garden plants?

Ron as mentioned that Convolvulus libanoticus is scented but i cannot find a source for these seeds... can anybody help?

Colin

I have seedlings of C. chilensis just coming up. Can't wait to see those flowers it will make!

Joseph

hi Joseph good news about your chilensis... i put six seeds in and three have germinated already :-)

do you have any other convolvulus?

Let's see cotyledon photos of the Convolvulus species for general reference and for the PlantFiles
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/107578/

I only have the one species, chilensis, going of Convolvulus, Colin. Ron, I shall try to get a photo of the cotyledons and post them here for evaluation and comparison with those Colin has growing.

here's a qiuck list of some convolvulus species that i've found commercially available...

althaeoides (and ssp. tenuissimus)
cneorum
sabiatus (syn. mauritanicus)

however, they're sold as plants and not seeds, and i think(don't know yet) that i'll need more than one clone in order to produce seeds... so if anyone has any seeds to trade of these or any convolvulus, please let me know (i have a few spare seeds of: chilensis scoparius, canariensis, floridus and remotus to trade)

i have chilensis sprouting at the moment and will put a pic of the cotyldons up within the next few days.....

Colin

Colin - Thanks for posting the cotyledons...they have a significant indentation on the dorsal edge that makes them look closer to Ipomoea cotyledons...

Looking forward to seeing the comparison with the C.chilensis that Joseph has growing...

thanks ron :-)
will do

Will do Ron, thanks! Colin, I like the details you captured on the cotyledon veins!

howdy, Geraldine87~ i would try to look in the Morning Glory forums, with the search engines, and type in [ large flowered ] for searching in the ''posts''if this confuses ya, Dont Worry, it did me!~So d-mail me or say so and I'd try to help more. There are a lot of different types that have large flowers plus, you sometimes can get larger blooms by adding additional nutrients...

Hi Geraldine87... sorry i must have missed you there :-s

Colin

Ron... i've uploaded the picture but it's not showing... did i miss something out?

Colin - When you successfully add a photo to the PlantFiles the system will let you know that it was added successfully thank you for adding the photo and ask you if you would like to add another one...

Did the system inform you that the operation was successful and thank you (?)

The photos added to the PlantFiles do not show up immediately but are placed into a pending que for one of the staff to quickly review and then release into the PlantFiles...

You can check to see if you have any images pending by looking on your home page...

TTY,...

Ron

thanks Ron... i think i missed the 'thankyou' bit... but i did get 'do you want etc.' i'll wait and see...

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Colin - Pending images show up immediately on your homepage...reload it your homepage just check your homepage...if they are in the que they will show up in the "You have (whatever # of images) pending...

When I look at your homepage it isn't showing the PlantFile contribution section (take a look at anybody else's homepage for reference,...it shows by default even for people who have not yet contributed anything)...is it possible that in your hompage settings that you have inadvertently dis-enabled this feature (?) ...you might want to double check on that...

Ron

thanks ron... it was turned off!... and now it's on :-)

Colin, for convolvulus libanoticus....

http://i1.treknature.com/photos/1990/convolvulus_libanoticus7_228.jpg

I think it's safe to assume that it comes from Libanon...unfortunately the people I know from Libanon won't have time for plant hunting...

Martin

thanks martin... but i can't get the link to work.... :-(

http://www.treknature.com/gallery/photo177826.htm

Italy - Convolvulus libanoticus
http://www.treknature.com/gallery/photo173726.htm
if the root word was derived from Libani = Mt.Lebanon, it would generally indicate that the species occurred in the area (but not necessarily limited to that ) of Lebanon ; if derived from Libanos = incense, then it would indicate that the plant was somehow either fragrant (e.g., flowers or leaves) and / or some plant part or derivative (e.g., dried sap) was used in the production of incense

The suffix ticus indicates 'belonging to' and therefore libanoticus likely indicates belong to the area of Lebanon...

Colin,

I have althaeoides seeds...

Martin

i sent you a dmail martin...

(Zone 7a)

Does anyone know about Convolvulus erubescens? DG PlantFiles doesn't give its zone hardiness, but refers to it as invasive, which makes me a bit nervous about growing it here. The seed came to me from http://www.nargs.org/ , and the packet says it was collected in "Australia: Bywong, NSW"

I'm also going to try C. cneorum, so any advice on germination and culture (for both Convolvulus sp.) would be most welcome. So far, a good proportion of sand in the growing medium (as well as topping of sand) and as much sun as I can muster seem advisable.

Thanking anyone who answers in advance,

karen

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

cool Karen

all i know about it is its supposedly a perennial vine and the plant is self fertile. it also likes wet areas like the coast. if you grow it in a pot i think it would be fine.

if you get seeds off of it once you grow it keep me in mind. i love the smaller species.

(Zone 7a)

Hi Imzadi - Thanks for responding, and I've put you down on my reminder if I do get any seeds. But, which species of Convolvulus are you advising me about?

I have to say I don't always have success germinating unusual species of mgs, so still hope to hear about that for these two.

Well, while I'm at it, I see we have some newcomers since I disappeared around the Cretaceous. Have any of you germinated a species like Evolvulus nuttallianus? Would like to hear about that, too. I already failed with one batch using the standard baggie method, and then another attempt which involved stratifying the seed over winter.

http://www.treknature.com/gallery/photo134756.htm
I really like this one, and the fact mentioned that it has been applied for medicinal uses makes me want to research it more. I like its looks the best color-wise as well. I wonder if it would tolerate the heat here?? hmmmmm...

thanks for posting these, Ron!!!

(Zone 7a)

Agree about beauty & usefulness of I. sepiaria, Darren - hope you find out more about it, too

Ditto thanks to Ron for the links, too

Still hoping for info asked about here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6605090

sorry about that Karen i was talking about Convolvulus erubescens

(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Imzadi

Good for you, Sylvia, on sprouting Convolvulus floridus - another silver-leaved, white-flowered beauty.

Darren, you could fill your patch of desert with silver-leaved MGs - I had no idea what a variety of these there seem to be. You might want to check out the link I posted above for NARGS - they have seeds for unusual plants from almost every imaginable habitat in the world...Salvia cyanescens would make a great companion for the desert mgs...I wonder how the *silvery*, woolly-ish snapdragon, Antirrhinum hispanicum would do for you? I've seen night-blooming cacti on NARGS in the past, too. Of course, there's no telling from year to year what the membership will donate, but that's part of the fun.

thanks Bluespiral, I will look into NARG as soon as I find some cool time to do something, with, what I find there!
:Darren

Hi bluespiral.... can you put me down for some seeds of c erubescens if you get any?

as for germinating convolvulus(in general)... i have had very few seeds that didn't sprout... i used my soak overnight... nick those seeds that don't swell the next morning, and placing in sealed plastic tubs the following evening, waiting untill they show both the radical and hypocotyl before potting up... keeping the humidity up for a couple of days untill the seedcoats are off... then the usuall :-)

Sylvia... love that sprout :-)

Darren... if you find seeds of I. sepiaria let me know and i'll keep my eye open for some too :-)

pic is Convolvulus floridus.... looking fine even if it is a little damp looking...

here's Convolvulus sabiatus (mauritanicus)

the flowers are lovely when they open(a little later) and they last more than one day...
