Greetings from Mexico

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi All!

I'm in Mexico! I'm starting a thread for birds I'm seeing here. Feel free to ID them as well.

First off is a bird that actually posed for me. I think this is a cactus wren?

Some sort of flicker. I don't know what kind. but it has nearly the same call as the ones in my yard.

I think you are right about the first two being a cactus wren because of the bold supercilium. Lee

Hey Marna! So glad you got there with no problems.

Looks like a Gilded Flicker and a Cactus Wren.

Have a great time!

You hang in there, Mrs Ed. I know it must be tough. Gorgeous birds.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

Mrs_Ed, hope you have a great time and get lots of bird photos. Just be real careful.

A birding friend of mine recently went on a birding expedition in Mexico, near Mexico City. He was telling me how they got stopped several times in Mexico City by individuals posing as police. I think the first time they were stopped they wanted $150.00 but they negotiated the fee (fine) downward. The second time they used the language (no hablan espańol) ploy. The last time they didn't stop at all ... just kept driving. I'm not sure I would want to travel outside of the resort area without having a sizable group with me.

Again, hope you have an enjoyable vacation.

Buenas Noches !!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Well, hey whatcha doing there??? Have a great trip!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hi all!

I'm in Cabo San lucas, Resin. (Baja Cal. Sur). I have to say that this is one of the few places in Mexico where I feel pretty safe. The police all are pretty good here, you don't hear any reports of that kind of activity. We think that they don't want anything to screw up the area.

Today I went to the nearby town of San Jose del Cabo. It has a fresh water estuary. It sounds like a jungle between the coots and the woodpeckers. I was DELIGHTED to see li'l Aussie's Mexican Amigos there! Again, I'm not going to try to ID anything here, I'll post later on the ID thread when I get home if you want. Resin, don't feel you have to keep scrolling around here to do it.

You picked a great time to be away, -32°F in parts of Illinois tonight! I thought the woodpecker looked like one of the Melanerpes woodpeckers.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

thanks Claypa. I have a few more WPs.

Let me tell you, at 7am this morning it was -22 back home and 61 here. I was indeed a happy camper

Continuing (I'm getting knocked off the wireless). This looks like one of nanny's warblers

Mrs Ed, have you got one of Resin's books? Your ID skills leave me in awe. However, they are colourful.

Cabo San lucas (Baja Cal. Sur)

Thanks!

Agree with Claypa it is one of the Melanerpes woodpeckers on the first set; wanted the location to check which ones needed to be considered. In Baja Cal., it is Gila Woodpecker, but if it had been e.g. eastern Mexico, then it would have been Golden-fronted.

"this little group was hanging out in a tree above where a hose was leaking at a public beach" - House Finches and Lesser Goldfinches

"This looks like one of nanny's warblers" - Orange-crowned Warbler

"Some finchy-type bird ... Another with orange tint" - House Finches

"Bunch of Coots there. what kind, I dont' know" - American Coot and Moorhen (same as you get at home!)

"wide shot" - Great Egret

"something with red on it. LOL" - Moorhen again

"something with a big bill…" - Ruddy Duck

"Some cute ducks…" - Blue-winged Teal (l to r: female, two males)

Mrs. Ed, you almost had them ID right!! LOL

Looks like a nice place to visit...if I could ever get DH to take a vaction again...

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Glad you are all enjoying my IDs! Thanks Resin for doing the work. We went fishing today, so not so many bird pix. Just some of the beggars. This is truly the funnest part of fishing for me.

It's always a frenzy coming back in from the day and the leftover bait goes to the birds.
