Think Spring! SWAP discussion thread for Feb. 21 seed party

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ohhh I loved that purple millet...I just let the seed heads fall - shoud've collected some seed, I guess. Hoping it'll reseed

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes to both Purple Millet and Sea Oats. Thank you.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Ohhh me too????

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

for the millet or the sea oats (or both)?

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Both, I don;'t have any grasses here.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Here's a picture of my blackeyed susans from last fall.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wow! Is that one plant, or a hedge?

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

It's just one plant. It's crowding my tomatoes so early this spring I'm going to divide it up- I can put some in other parts of my garden and also give some away. I think it grew so big because this part of the garden where I grow my tomatoes has been so well composted over the years.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

From my garden:
Rose of Sharon (purple)
Aster (also purple)
Trumpet vine (Campsis radicans)
Marigolds (mix of orange & yellow)
Clove Basil (Ocimum gratissimum)
Okra Hill Country Red
Orchid pepper (Capsicum baccatum-- I think, have to look that one up again)

Commercial (mostly Baker Creek & Pinetree):
Watermelon White Wonder
Eggplant Turkish Orange
Eggplant Thai Green
Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis)
Sweet Briar Rose (Rosa eglanteria)
Raisin Tree (Hovenia dulcis) small amt
Jujube (Zizyphus jujuba)

I think I also have some Voodoo Lily bulbs (Sauromatum guttatum venosum). Have to check in the shed later to make sure.

Would love some Cassias and Columbine.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I'll bring as many packetted seed & plants as I can squeeze into a shoebox. LOLOLOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I'm a total basil addict, so I'd love to try your Clove Basil! In return, I can offer you a "hot & spicy" basil from Sumatra (Chantell gave me some well traveled seeds last year, and I loved the flavor, like a strong, peppery Thai basil)... or my favorite pesto basil from Italy... or just about any other type of basil, LOL.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I wondered how that did for you, Jill - so glad you liked it!!

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

Kubileya, I've got some columbine seeds somewhere, if only I can find them, to trade for some clove basil too. Or I can just wait for Critter to start some plants and then beg a cutting or two :)

Critter, if I can find my seeds before tomorrow, I'll bring them with me for a little pre-swap if were're still on for tomorrow after work. But I doubt there's anything in them though that you don't already have.

I'll be bringing purple millet for those who asked and xtra. Glad I just won't be totally empty handed.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sorry, Chantell, though I had reported back! I didn't harvest mine much, because one taste and I knew I wanted it to just produce seed for me so I could share it and grow it again next year. :-) Didn't you get a seedling or two at the spring swap? Maybe they didn't make it, or maybe somebody else glommed onto them. LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I can set you up with enough columbines for Miata's basil as well as mine, Kubileya... not sure how I missed your request at the bottom. I'll check my stash, also, as I may have some cassia somewhere and doubt I'll manage to get it started this year.

Yes, we're on, Miata! I'm looking forward to seeing you.

Brunswick, MD(Zone 6b)

I do have one other offering. My shredded umbrella plant bloomed and I collected the seeds in the fall. I don't have any idea how to germinate them. If anyone wants some to experiment with some, I've got plenty.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/70268/

See ya tomorrow shortly after 4 Critter.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Critter (and any other basil lovers), I have some Cinnamon Basil, too, if you don't already have that one. It's last year's seed, but will probably still give good germination.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm glad you've got Cinnamon Basil, Kubileya, as I have a pinch left from the year before for myself but wasn't able to harvest any fresh seed to share last season -- and it's a nice one!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Shredded umbrella- I'm up for a challenge!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Anyone have Passi seeds?

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I have two whole P. maliformis seeds and a number of P. rubra seeds. I might have some P. citrina cuttings, too.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Seems it might be time to post my list of seeds I will be bringing.

Now--I DO have one request.......

I have prepared between 10-20 packets of most of the seeds I plan to share. They will all be in well-marked, legal-sized envelopes in a box with the seed packets inside the envelopes. I also plan to have a description of the plant inside and will paste a photo on the outside of the envelopes so you can see what the plant looks like in bloom.
I will, simply, put this box on the Swap table and everyone can help themselves.

I would prefer that people do not ask me to put this or that aside for them as there will be plenty of everything. Please!

I do not, really have anything all that new. Most of you already know what I have...same thing I have always had, but there are some unusual plants that some of the new attendees might want and a couple new additions to my list..

Here is what I will be bringing to share:

1--Double Yellow Datura--20 packets
2--Tripple Purple/White Datura "Metel"--20 packets
3-- 4 O' Clocks-"Broken Colors"--20 packets
4--Tall, Red perennial Hibiscus--blooms in 3-4 years from seed--18 packets
5--Grandpa Otts M.G.--12 packets
6--Grandpa Otts M.G. (accidentally) mixed with Cardinal Climber vine--12 packets
7--Cardinal Climber (red)--11 packets
8--M.G. Blue Picotee (I. Nil type "kikyo") w/pink ones mixed it--15 packets
9--M.G. Crimson Rambler--3 packets
10--Tall, Blue Ageratum (seriously biennial!)--10 packets
11--Blue Forget-Me-Nots (biennial/perennial)--10 packets
12--Giant, Purple Amaranth--10 packets
13--Orange Oriental Poppy--15 packets
14--Northern Sea Oats--6 packets
15--Hollyhocks (assorted, common--not mine!)--10 packets
16--Anise Hyssop "Black Adder" (fragrant perennial)--10 packets
17--Wintersweet Shrub (Chimonanthus praecox)-blooms in 5-7 yrs. from seed--10 packets.
18--Light Pink Cleome--(annual) 15 packets
19--Tiger Lily bulbils (stored for a year??)--3 packets

Besides the above--there will be a "MISCELLANEOUS" section in the front with this and that--some older seeds--some past trades I am not interested in, some seed packets, etc......

Thank you, Gita

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita - I may have to bow out of our Brug trade. I had them marked but apparently the markings got lost some how - point being I'm not sure for certain what I'd give you is Dr. Seuss. BUT I can take a fresh cutting from the plant and bring to you if you'd like - please let me know.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle--

If you have any leaves showing yet........

Dr. Seuss' leaves are serrated all around the edges.
CG's are smooth-edged.
Other than that--there is hardly any difference between the two.

Does this help?

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

OMG - you're right forgot about that...I'll keep an eye on them... Problem is I found one insignis (sp?) in the bunch as well. I will do a better job marking next time I do this AND the more I read the more sense it makes to plop em in soil as you recommended. I think part of the issue was that the places I marked them fell off....ugh!!! Again, I can bring you a brown cutting above the "Y" as well if you'd like.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Chantelle--
If you have not yet rooted the cuttings, I am afraid that it might be too late in the season.

Usually cuttings are taken early Fall and then put in pots to root, not spring, when the plant is dormant.
It's no biggie if you do not have one--I will still bring you a Maya. I have so many growing....Besides, I have the WHOLE Mama vegging dormant in the basement.

OK? Don't sweat it! Gita

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahh Gita - thank you...I will add that to my Brug notes so I know in the future. I will also check the leaves - and keep an eye on the ones that I moved from water to soil for the swap.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

PEPPERS!

Who needs pepper seeds?

Here's what I'm packing for trades or already have packed.

I also have a few leftover seeds from the co-op I just did, including a $1 pack of 'Mandarin' (11 seeds, hybrid orange bell that's TMV tolerant).

From my garden:
'Black Pearl' (2008) ornamental with dark foliage & round deep purple hot peppers like gumballs
'Pretty Purple Pepper' (2007) small ornamental plants with purple foliage & round hot purple peppers
'Medusa' (2008) small ornamental with multicolored sweet peppers
'Aji Dulce #2' (2008) looks and smells like a red habanero, fruity sweet with little or no heat!
'Numex Orange Suave' (2008) looks and smells like an orange habanero, fruity sweet with little or no heat!
'Numex Big Jim' (2008, few) large mild chile pepper
'Hot Portugal' (2008) large medium-hot chile pepper
'Fish Pepper' (2008) heirloom from Chesapeake area, great flavor, cayenne-like heat, variegated foliage

Commercial
Tabasco (HPS 2009) loaded with hot little peppers
Pizza Pepper (HPS 2009) mild, thick walled

I also have a bunch of seeds from 2008 commercial packs shared with me by another DGer (parcelsus), including several varieties of pimento/paprika peppers, several frying peppers (thin walled), and (for the adventuresome) Peter Peppers. If there's interest, I'll edit this post with a list of varieties.

Let me know if there's anything general or specifically that you're looking for, and I'll check my pepper stash.

:-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Tomatoes!

I saved a lot of these 3 from last year's garden:

'Potato Top' (pink beefsteak, sweet & meaty, my most reliable pink)
'Wisconsin 55' (red round solid slicer/canner)
'Wild Cherry' (currant tomato, great for garden snacks, let it ramble at the edge of a bed)

I also have a pretty good stash of tomato seeds, so please let me know if there's anything specifically or generally (red, gold, bicolor, black, pink, oxheart, cherry, etc) that you're looking for, and I'll check for you.

Basils!

Italian Basil (2008) -- this is my favorite pesto basil from Italy. I didn't get many seeds last year, so if you have leftovers from an earlier year please don't ask for these.

"Hot & Spicy" basil (2008) from an island off the coast of Sumatra. Chantell found this variety for us! It's like an intense, peppery, Thai basil, with small pointed leaves and white bloom spikes.

Sicilian Basil (2008) -- similar to my other Italian basil, but milder.

I've got some other basils left in my stash, so again LMK if there's anything you're looking for... Lemon & Lime mix, dwarf small leaf varieties, cinnamon basil, purple basils...

Commercial basil/herb seeds
I purchased bulk packs of the following varieties from HPS & Hazzards. I'd like to be reimbursed 50 cents per pack for these, please, unless you're trading me commercial or rare seeds in return. Thanks!
(edited to say don't worry about $ for these... I put some sampler packs on Marketplace to cover that. :-)

'Blue Spice'
'Purple Ruffles'
'Serrata' (green with fancy serrated leaf)
Thai Basil 'Siam Queen'
'Fernleaf' Dill (nice in a patio pot with a bush cucumber)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

As usual I have no seeds - so y'all will have to be happy with my happy smiling self! I will be bringing a fatplant for the gift table (and several for buttoner & froggy) - IF there are any MG or BES-vine seeds I'll happily take them off your hands ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'm working on getting us a deal on row cover... even without an extra discount, ordering more makes it cheaper. Does anybody need row cover? I'm looking at the medium weight DuPont stuff, 6 feet wide, let's say in 25 foot lengths.

Becky, I should have extra MG mixed seeds for you. :-)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanx - on the row covers - hmmm, I could tape 3 x 25 ft lengths together & cover my entire back yard ^_^

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL. It's nice to use for covering seedlings and houseplants moving outside while you're hardening them off.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Bec - MG's seriously...you even ask...sheesh

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Bec,

I have several kinds of MG's. I don't have room for them. WHERE, pray tell, will you grow them in your tiny yard?

Holly is the MG queen. She has so many! Ask her--but I can, seriously, give you at least 3 different kinds....

Gita

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ooh, I just found a pack of Love in a Puff... nice to grow with other vines... ;-)

We're going to need a new and more organized thread this week, I think... I don't want this one to get too long for any dial-uppers to load, and as this starts heating up we'll probably want to post and edit our "have" and "wish" lists to help keep things together... or we could just continue the thread in this format.

I've started some index cards to help me keep track of requests... :-)

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm just like Seattle - I grow everything UPWARDS!! LOL Plus I also grow vines in pots and planters on the deck

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Tell ya what...I'll simply bring my box (minus the stuff I'm planting)...ya'll have a field day with it - to include 3 million MG's
Jill - index cards? OMG - that I could be a tenth as organized as you....

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

You can't see my desk, or you wouldn't accuse me of being organized! The index cards will work better than a list for me, since I want to make up some sort of little goodie bag for everybody with a pack or two of seeds to get started (if you don't make requests, you'll get something random, which you can then trade away if you don't want it).

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Request then - something that grows UPWARDS!!! ^_^
