Garden Photos - Part 48

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I'm after Victoria Day (May 18th this year) for perennials and annuals but my dahlias are planted out dependent on soil tempurature which is usually 1st week of June. I direct sow alot in April and May though. mmmm early veggie greens mmmm.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

wha, you have me spinning with all you sources. If Victor pips up, I will be sent into orbit. I have so many windows open right now that I am losing track of what I am looking for Vib, ilex, witch hazel and acer. I am waiting until I get a list of dwarf Japanese maples from Davidsans to order those. I did get two great reference books today. Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs and a copy of Hollies The Genus Ilex by Fred Galle which will help with my thoughts and plans. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

you want sources - i happened to visit Amazon today and ordered Vendees book on JM's 4th addition (not released yet) and the jm pocket guide. actually ordered the other day and waited for the new amazon visa to get $30 off. sweet deal - i'll cut it up when it arrives.

And i really think davidsans will be a great source of jm's - i have gift cert. i have to use else where - there are a couple at d-sans i have on hold and he is supposed to get a list to me as well.

build a spread sheet and then make your decisions

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you for all the input on Clematis everyone. Just the kind of info I was looking for!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

thanks Victor,Deb, and Jo Ann

Sorry I didn't write sooner Jo Ann, I didn't have time before heading off to work. I'm just on a break now, so this is pretty cut and dry.

Lombards Weeping is likely the smallest at 4-6' (I haven't seen one over 5')
then Christmas Cheer at around 6-8'
there quite a few in the 8-10'range. (10 year age) I list them later if you'd like.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, Doing a Spread sheet is a good idea. I love making them and using them for lots of stuff like the one I did for paint colors for all the rooms in the house, book lists, fund raising list etc. Plus my whole garden is in a journal on DG. Digging holes and doing entry work is my life these days.

I will order the forthcoming new edition (4th) of the Gregory/ Vertrees book. I will get the pocket guide now. I have life rights to receive all my books at cost from my old store. I had an old copy of Vertrees first Maple book done in the 70's that was lost in when we had water damage to our house. I always wanted Japanese Maples. Thanks for the heads up. More money spent. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Didn't know about the new edition. Have the 3rd and the pocket. I'll get the new one. Have fun, Patti!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thaks RC I am looking at Fairweather Gardens for shorter WH. Cant deide between the reds and coppers.

Thomaston, CT

I miss a few days, & am inundated with info--love the clems & the WHs---I think I'm about spent out, except for a few DLs & iris.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice pics, everyone!

Shelly, the pics of the road remind me of the roads I traveled in the Sierras around Reno, NV. There was the Mount Rose Highway, which was lots of switchbacks, and then there was the one the went up to Virginia City, another scary one. I knew a bicycle enthusiast who used to ride up those roads on a regular basis. I used to do a lot of bike riding back in the day, but I could never have done those twisting, steep roads! Not only would they have been too strenuous for me, but I would have worried too much about some crazy driver hitting me or driving me of the road. I could just seem myself tumbling down one of those mountainsides with my bike!

Joan, is there a clem coop going on now?

Karen

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Victor, the new edition wont be out until July or Aug. Wha told me about it.
Karen, there is a clematis coop in the wish list stage right now. She is paring down the list of what will be offered. Patti

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Karen, i think that not riding a bike there was very wise!!! What a view you must have had though. I have come across a few bikers on that rd before, and it really bothers me every time. Mainly because I worry about them.

Well, i wasn't going to post more pics for another hour or two. But, since I know that you are up already Jo Ann, I'll post some now.

You animal lol
Ruby is beautiful.
I found some smaller WH's on Fairweather Gardens.
Some only 40" high and some 3-4 feet.
Now I have to put the idea to DD.
I'll send her some pics at work.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

we crossed
WOW the back lighting on that is fantastic.
It is so grey and snow civered here, cheers me up to see the sun in your photos.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

You're funny Jo Ann!
I'm glad to see that here that they cheer things up for you! They say that we might get snow again this weekend. Sure hope not. I'm going to hang on to these pics, just to keep me going while it lasts.

since everyone has been talking about fairweather garden, and Jan sent me there ( :-) ), I checked out their witch hazels today. I think that I was reading their site wrong though. I thought that when it said to 30-40" or 2-3', etc. that that was the size that they were offering for that price. But, I'm going to have to check it out again knowing that it's different. That will be good.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I don't think that I have any more pics, on this computer, of whitch hazels. So I'll have to wait until this weekend to find some more to take pics of. The only other ones that I have here are all of frozen stuff.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I assumed the size was the mature growth size.
Do you mean they get to be bigger?
here is one of my faves.

Usually. 10-12' is sort of an average size for them, sorry to say. :-/

Here's the davesgarden info on Orange Peel. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/84359/

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Fairweather has a great selection though. If I weren't trying to get a handle on my fetish for witch hazels (already have 5 or6 of them, maybe more :-o) I would look into getting some from them. Unfortunately they don't have strawberries and cream though. That's they one that I might make an allowance for this year.

I just checked WH on Forest Farm and I simply cant use something that big.
NUTS I was going to go for those short ones for the garden lol guess not.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Sorry about that. If it's any consolation.... My 4 yr. old christmas cheer is only 1' tall x 3' wide now, and I prune my Arnold Promise every other year to keep it at about 3'tall x 3.5' wide. I've had it for at least 7 years now, and it was a pretty good size shrub when I got it (i'd say 5yr. old when it came home with me)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Never say die I say
Just talked to DD she said the one she had at her old house was 12 feet high.
She noticed the crestfallen look on my face as I had crought up WH the first week we moved in.
She suggested I remove one of the diseased Vibernums pictured below and replace it w/WH
How great is that? and all befor 7:00 in the AM.
This will be a job for nursery so Big bucks meands lots of months of saving.

OH the WH would go at the right ,there are two vibes together and both are on the short list as far a life goes. They are 20 years old and diseased, dispite how they flower profusly.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I was just going to say "wow, those are diseased?" they are sure giving it a "last hurayyy" then. But, if they're going to go anyhow, then that looks to be an excellent spot! quite amazing for all before 7:00am. If they are just going tearing things up anyhow.... does it need to be a nursery person? Could it just be a neighbor kid (if there is one in your area) that wants to earn extra money that you could pay to cut it down and dig up some of the roots? Then it would just take someone more knowledgable to plant the new plant . Normally people pay the more big $$ to hire someone to work in the yard, that knows what they're doing, so that they don't kill things. But, in this case, maybe you don't really need that. Youd make a neighbor kid happier and then you'd be happier for not having spent as much. Or maybe It's just wishful thinking on my part, given that I supervise teenagers, it's easy for me to find one that really wants to do a good job and earn extra money.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

There is a neighborhood kid right in this house.
I love her dearly but there are new perennial plants around the skirt of those vibes and I want someone who will be careful. I'll use the same people who replaced a viber. in the front of the house.
I "over trimmed" one and it looked awful.
I am not allowed to be seen with trimmers since.
What time of year is it good to plant WH 's?

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

That's funny JoAnn, a neighborhood kid right in this house!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I overtrim many shrubs in the late fall or very early spring like march and by june they usually look fine sometimes it takes that for the plant to heal itself or for you to be able to spray and help a plant since one that is overlarge may no be able to help itself, I prune and chop all kind of stuff love doing it hubby calls me edward scissors hands and it is not in good way lol hahahah or sometimes its the butcher but in the end it is always for the best of the plant

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

She is a XBOX 360 champion and works weekends for her father.
She helped me plant bulbs once and I got the definate impression she would NOT make a gardener.
She even blanched and ran away from a garden spider devouring a bee.
This would also be the kid who doesnt miss a slasher movie.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

LOL Sicc.
When I pruned the vib I took off the flower buds for the next year.
DD is the shrub and rose mavin so thats her department now.
I design and plant the gardens.
She has a sun garden on a slope where I cant go due to old age and bad knees.
Give me a level spot anyday.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

ok well it is important to trim after the blooming if it builds blooms for the next year ahhahah live and learn hahah

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

hi shelly - nice picture of diana - that is the one it have here.

I fell over once and could not get up. Couldnt roll left, right backwards. On a slope headed towards the swamp 130 degrees with my head pointing down. Couldnt move to save my life. Level ground? I wont go there and dont care what grows there, those cockabur things can grow.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am in for the level property too!... i hate the slopes around my house

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

that is the pitfalls of life I have a really bad back so I trim but hubby does all the picking up and raking and digging with the full size shovel and if I get down to do things he then has to help me get back up since I do get stuck on the ground he always laughs and tells me if I am not nice one day he will leave me there lol hahhah and I tell him he will have to make his own dinner

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

chicken - i think i saw you an America's funniest home video's!

My husband was lucky to find me. Outta site outta mind!

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)
