Wouldn't it be nice if our home page automatically refreshed itself every 30 seconds or so? Just the home page, not the rest of the site of course, and with the option to turn it off as well.
DH is always thinking I'm web surfing like mad cause he hears the mouse click, click, clicking away...but in reality all I'm really doing is refreshing my home page every 10 seconds or so to see what new things pop up ^_^
Sure would save on mouse wear and tear...
Self-Refreshing Home Page
Now, that sounds like an exact image of me! Yes, it would be a great thing if our home page automatically reloaded on a regular basis.
Ten seconds seems a little quick. Maybe every minute? That would give me time to read a new message on a thread I'm interested in if one is posted.
My peeve is when responding to a thread and after clicking to preview my message a warning shows that someone has left a message while I was getting mine ready. I can click to read the new message posted to make sure my message isn't redundant [losing what I have typed. I have to type my message again if not redundant] or go ahead and send, return to the thread, skip to new and back up to the post above mine to read it.
I'm not sure how well the auto-refresh that's frequent like that would work (if it's even possible for Dave to do that). If you're in the middle of scrolling down to investigate something farther down on the page and it takes a time out to reload the page then you'll have to sit there and wait for it to finish and then go back to scrolling down to see what you wanted to look at. Personally I think that would be much more annoying than having to manually refresh on occasion. And if the auto-refresh works in threads too as well as on the home page, I expect if you were partway through typing a response and it automatically refreshed the page you'd lose what you typed and have to start all over again.
gk--I'm not sure what's going on with you having to retype your posts if you go to look at the new message, I have never had to do that since that link opens in a new window, all you have to do is close that new window and your post that you had typed will still be there in your original window. Or if for some reason it is opening in the same window and wiping out what you typed, there are two ways around that. One is to right-click on the link and tell it to open in a new window, or the second way is to highlight all the text in your post, hit Ctrl-C to copy it, then if you need it again you can type Ctrl-V to paste it in again after you've looked at the new message.
I asked for it ONLY on the home page...nowhere else, not in the forums. Just the home page..I think it would be cool and Dave can do anything!!
But how much time do we spend staring at the homepage?
Typically I find something, click on it and read/respond, etc., then click "home" to see what else is new and exciting ;o)
If you're in the middle of scrolling down to investigate something farther down on the page and it takes a time out to reload the page
This is why we can't do it. news.google.com does this and it irritates me to no end. I'm scrolling down, reading, when all of a sudden it reloads itself and what I was looking at is now gone, replaced by something else.
We all have a reload function in our browsers and that's the proper way to reload a static webpage. Just hit F5 or Ctrl-R and it'll reload itself for you.
hmmm...you can't do it just for the home page? that's too bad. I sit and stare at my home page all day, clicking the refresh button to see what's been posted new to my watched threads...
Oh well, it was a thought, thanks for responding!!
I'm getting real lazy in my "older" age, LOL. I want the computer's brain to do everything for me, maybe read my thoughts and when I think "reload", it will just automatically do it. At the top of my screen there's a little half circle arrow, icon thingy ... all I have to do is click on that to re-load the page ... that tell's you how lazy I am, huh?
On better thought, I guess it wouldn't be such a good idea for the computer to read my mind ... it would hear a lot of %%##@@**%%!! when I get impatient! ^_^
LOL ... Threegardeners, you really do sound just like me! I'm in and out during the day but stay logged in and whenever I come in I walk through the study, stop to glance at the computer screen and then hit the button to refresh/reload, to see what's new!
after clicking to preview my message a warning shows that
someone has left a message while I was getting mine ready.
You can just right click on the “warning” and open it in a separate page
to read it. That allows you to go back and adjust your post if necessary.
I'm with Dave! I hate when I'm looking at anything and it refreshes itself. Even the weather pages!
