To Chase Away The Winter Blues...2

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

It has been grey & raining hard all day; much of the area is experiencing some radical flooding. I am on a hill, so no flooding. LOL - I pay my dues when the hills get icy...
These have been offered in lieu of Sunshine. (capitalized due to its importance.)

Katye I hope you see a little sun today. We finally are getting some and even though its cold out the sunshine does lift your spirits. Your pics certainly have helped as well. I like the last one of "Sunshine" very much, but would it grow here?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Pat, do you mean the yellow iris Butter & Sugar? If so, yes..I have them here, in Maine.

Well duh. Missed the SI meaning. Thanks for info pix. I think I recall you posting these sunny beauties now that you mention it. So many beauties and so little room. My SI and JI didn't bloom very well last year due to the drought I think. They also probably would benefit from dividing if I can get to it this year. Oldest son and DinL have new house so I can give some divisions to them. Maybe I should have a dividing of the plants cookout to start the garden season off and get some help digging. Hmmm sounds like a plan. :)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Sounds like an excellent plan. I may have to try that myself. Hey, come on over and bring a shovel... lol

Watch it on inviting over with shovel....my DD tells the DGD's they are going to the plant place to get some new plants. Next thing I know the kids and DD are at my house wandering through the yard looking......

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

do they call you the plant lady?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Nope..Mem the Lily nut.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

just got the year end 401K statements - talk about your winter blues !!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I don't plan to even look at mine, Bill. It's just too depressing. I'll resume looking once the nightmare economy turns around. LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good idea, Louise. It's down to a 201K by now.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

LOL, Victor!! That may be generous too!! LOL By the way, did you see that tamiflu is not effective on any of the current flu strains? Bummer! My doctor gave me a prescription for some to have on hand given the terrible case I had last winter. A couple days ago I had the early feeling that I was catching something from a violently coughing medical tech that I had to have contact with the day before. I immediately tried your approach of gargling with the hydrogen peroxide/water several times and after one sluggish day, I feel much better today.

Stay well everyone!!

South Hamilton, MA

Got a flu shot in Oct--have asthema so Dr. insists. So far so good.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well i have been ignoring them - in the middle of refinancing the house so had to provide the information. great deal on the refinance dropping down to a 15 yr fixed for almost the same monthly payment - the omg moment came when i realized that we lost more this past year, really the last three months of 08 - than we just saved on the refy. they will come back - they will come back................

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Coupla years my guy says.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

I hope they come back before I have to retire. I don't look very often either. They have improved a little from the worst low last year, but not much. If you can refin. now is a good time to do it. So many people are stuck with negative equity right now I'm afraid, so the ones who need the help in monthly payment can't qualify usually. Very scary stuff for a lot of people right now.
On a happier subject, here is a friend in the garden I am looking forward to seeing again.

People are getting layed off up here. Basically anything to do with wood. From the sawmills to the hardware centers.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Just heard a good line on the news ....
"I'm in the same boat as most Americans ... I think it's called the Titanic."
My DSIL has been out of work since the day before Thanksgiving. Things are getting interesting. It's a challenge learning how to stretch everything.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry to hear that, Candyce. Good luck to him.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Victor.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Oh, Dear, Candyce.....I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he can reconnect soon. He's such a nice guy and so hard-working. Down here things are so bad for so many good people. I think this county leads the country in foreclosures. So sad, and so much more crime as a result. The home invasions mid-day are very much on the rise. I'm so glad we got a security system last year. The worst part about being laid off is the psychological impact, I think. My DH went through it in the mid-90s, and it is so hard not to take it personally. Very stressful.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Candyce I hope he finds a good position soon. The uncertainty of losing a job is almost as bad as the loss of a paycheck. Best wishes to you all.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh yes, psychological impact of being laid off, fired, whatever, is horrific. Seen it too often! Even quitting can be tough to handle.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Love all your pics Kassia, Bill, Katye and Pat. Snug, nice Longwood Garden picture. I love that place. Been there twice. Would love to visit around Christmas someday. Thanks for sharing, everyone!

Kassia, I especially love your close-up of the peachy-pink rose petals. Soooo pretty!!!!

Bill, I like all three of you sunflower pics. I love that JM Shiraz. Very yummy looking!!!

Best wishes to anyone who is struggling in this economy now. Gas prices are going up again, I see. Hope it won't get too bad like before. The bad economy is not hurting us real bad right now. Since gas prices came down it's been better. My job is same as ever, in fact I'm making a little more lately. Might be making a little more in my PCA job soon, too. I never have made a lot, so I'm used to that. I use my car for work, so it's nice when gas prices are down.

Karen - glad to hear that you are doing ok amidst all this terrible uncertainty jobwise and otherwise. Even though retirement has its financial challenges, at least we're "living lean" by our own decision and not because of someone else's. LOL

Oh my what gorgeous orchid plants. Really lovely.
Here is a pic of some lilies. I miss the fragrance they send all through the garden. Can't wait for their return.

I love your orchids agedgardener, I wish I could grow them. I have one left from last year that I haven't killed yet, I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping I will see a bloom. : )
Beautiful liliesngam!

Love all the purples in your garden shot Meredith. I especially like the different combos of flower types and growth forms. Just a very nice scene.
Scicci, do you know the name of your DL? It looks very much like one I keep eyeing to buy every year but would like to see in a real garden first. All your pics make me feel spring can't be as long off as it seems when I look out the window.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thank you, it is kinda my not really wild - wildflower garden : ) lol
