I have only the winter daphne blooming, but I've posted it already. Here are buds on my Hellebores:
What's blooming in January?
Very good, Jen. One of these days I'll try putting together a collage!
Terrific! P.M. I have forced many spring blooming branches over winter for blooms, but never saucer magnolias! You're a pioneer! Thanks for sharing your finding.
Kim from Al.
The Prunus mume blooms anywhere from December to Febuary here, depending on the weather. It's a winter bloomer.
Love that Georgia Blue Deb, I used to have that and now I wonder when and why it croaked. It is probably too hot for it down here.
WInter bloomers are special and Prunus mume is such a cool tree. There are many cultivars on that one; all different shades of mostly pinks and the flowers can be slightly different too. I really need to find space for at least one of them.
Debin: Love that Georgia Blue! That's going on my wish list right now.
I've been very happy with it, especially because it always starts to bloom in January. A big plus in my mind. :)
Amen, Sister! Anything that blooms that early is well worth it. I've got to add witch hazel and a couple other early-blooming plants to my garden.
My yard looks like early March everything is about to bloom I think. I also noticed the Maples around here coming out too.
And now we are supposed to have cool weather again. Poor plants; they don't know what to do.......
I just hope my fruit trees keep their cool. LOL>
Nice collage H.p. Please tell me more about 'Breath of Spring'.
Lily: It's a form of spirea, maybe listed as bridal wreath, but we've always called it breath of spring. I don't find it listed as that under the plant files, but will see what I can find on the net and let you know more. I do know it's a spirea.
Thanks for the compliment. Wish I knew what the camellia is, but a former owner planted it.
Bridal wreath sprirea? Oooh, I've those in the garden. After seeing yours, I'm gonna brave the winter chills and go out and take a look at them. lol.
As far as your Camellias, it's a japonica is for sure, but there are so many named cultivars... I've one out of 3 'Pink Empress' camelias that went on and bloom this month, the other two has patiently waited until early spring every year....but this year they got flooded out, I hope they will survive this winter flood.
Kim
p.s. thanks to you, now I learned that Bridal wreath spirea is also known as "Breath of Spring".
Lily: Okay. It's spirea thunbergii. Here's a link to it.

Now we both have learned something!
Im not a natice NC'r so im still stunned to see things blooming already!
Flowergirl1, these are exceptions rather than the rules. These early spring-like blooms are out of season, big time due to the fluctuation of our 'crazy' weather in the South, which is typified of our Southern's winter. Hot then cold, cold then hot. I've another C. japonica that got confused and went on to bloom this time of year.
thats funny and very welcome!
some do. Depends where you get them. Normally they are a seedling mixture though like the sunshine strain. I love helle's!
Lilylove, I can't get over the quince!!
Hemophobic: I do love variegated camellias. Mine is a solid pink, but it's a reliable January bloomer, so I'm happy with that. Gotta get me a variegated before next winter...
Your "Breath of Spring" is definitely different from my Bridal Wreath spirea, which isn't even really budding yet. Hmmm. Another to add to my list.
:)
Deb
Debin: BOS shouldn't be blooming this early, but there it is.
Pyro: I love the color on the hellebore. If you ever find out the name, please post it. Otherwise, I'd love to have some seeds!
Angie
Lily love, when do your camellias normally bloom?
