What are your gardening plans for the New Year?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - didn't check that one yet. Guess I'll have to now!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

One thing in my plans is what to do with 150 caladium bulbs.Just did the co-op
OMG The 5 pound mixed bag has up to 110 bulbs in it.
Funny how the imagination expands when presented with this task.
Guess they will go where the woodpile is. The pile will be gone by March so a May planting is in order.
Theyll go in the top right area, nice shade there bright but not harsh.

Oh my goodness Jo Ann! I only got 30 because I knew I didn't want to tackle to many on top of everything else I order. Your going to be busy!! lol

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That is a lot. I did a mixed bag one year (from another source) but did not have the room to start them ahead of time. I ended up moving many of them after they starting leafing out because I did not like how they looked together.

Hi all gardening gurus! ;-)

Wow, as for plans, that's totally impossible since we will be moving from our current balconied apartment (Which is too small for my indoor plants and my partner is forever dishing the black-thumb's bit of grief. [winks!] ) to what we hope to be a rental 2-3 BR house or apartment in the Clinton/Lancaster/Leominster, MA with some gardening space, more than just container-gardening space...praying for a place to try out my blueberry-cherry tomato genetic cross to see how the anti-oxidant boost will effect my blood-work! That and a smokin' culinary herb collection would be awesome. To top it off, I have over a hundred cool varieties of out-of-the-ordinary variieties of flowers (annuals and perrenials) some Egyptian Walking Onions and maybe a few more useable spots, maybe a little bit of shade for some really neat shade plants, flowers, and evn herbs. I've got about 22 varieties of tomatoes and a bunch of cool veggies from last year as well, but I would LOVE some Dahlia Tubers and some Gladiolas for late summer-early fall.

So, those are my hopes...can't make plans yet...but given what I am hoping for, that is what I would do with a neat garden area, even if it is just a flower-bed area! PS: My trade list isn't up to date because, though I did find an easier way to add seeds to the list, it's still very trying for me, unless anyone has easier ways to do so? LOL (Didn't think so.) The attached image is JUST my flower seed collection of this year as all of my vegetables and herbs would take up another box equally or larger than that one! :-)

My plans are relatively easy. Don't buy anything. Organize (design) what I already have. Don't buy anything. Prune, fertilize, love what I already have. Don't buy anything. Divide a few hostas that are getting too big. Don't buy anything. Move the agastaches. They attract too many bees in the middle of a garden. Don't buy anything. Happy New Year Everyone..I won't buy anything. Til July. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

'Prune, fertilize, love what I already have'. Fidelity lives!!!!!!!!!!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hmmm, Victor, I like your spin. Not so sure about the pruning part tho, or maybe I should say that Jack is not so sure about the pruning part^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Guess it depends on the part?

I'm planting more daylilies...surprise! I've been sort of, kind of, busy on the LA (the lilyauction.com for those not in the know). I still have a few DL's that I just "NEED" and will try to get them on/from the LA.
There are about a dozen or so hostas that I want/will get. And come heck or highwater I will get a 'Dorothy Benedict' this year to use in future hosta breedings.
The garden bed is definitely going to expand this year, by leaps and bounds! If everything works out fine, I will have even less grass out back than I do now...long term plan=no grass at all...I'm at about 45% or so, of attaining this goal.
More stone, more soil, more mulch.
I'm definitely investing in a few really good hoses this coming year, and a few of the better sprinklers.
I'm going to concentrate on a few tropicals/annuals, and try to plant only what I've overwintered=EE's, Bananas, Dahlias, some annual seed that I saved (and some I received for trades!).
I have a nice little shrub/tree order that I listed on another thread...I've conferred with Victor a few times on this list, and I think it's a "definite!"
There's a wall I want to build, not sure if I'm going to get to it this year, but I'm gonna try.
There's also the shrub row at the back of the property that needs to go (this is also where the wall is to be built) this has to go also...not sure if that's going to happen or not. If it does, It will give me a space of about 40'x20' for more DL's and sub trees/shrubs!
ok...I'm sore and swetting already, and my debit card is growling at me...lol.

Have a Happy New year everyone!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I think the word might be Ouch! (many explatives deleted)

Hey Hem, Happy New Year!

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

I'm with you, venu209! I've only owned this house for two years, but the beds that I have are already really too crowded, so my plans are to make new beds and spppreeead out what I already have. Besides, my daughter just announced to me that she's getting married in June, so my budget has just gone into negative territory! Although I have offered to her that potted plants all over the ceremony site would look SO nice, and I'll be HAPPY to plant them in my garden after the wedding day! Aren't I a great mom? Heeee....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Congrats on your daughter, drum!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Congradulations drum! You have a wedding in June - and I have a new grandchild!

Dahlianut - we will be driving - not flying - to the westcoast. We hope to go through Canada on one way, and through the US in the other direction.

bbrookrd - I am trying to locate a Canadian source for the David Austin rose - Happy Child - to give to the baby; but of course, this is a perfect excuse for me to buy it for myself!

Hey! Maybe I will get a new rose for every one of the baby's birthday! That sounds fair, doesn't it?

Thom - just how big is your garden, anyway? You seem to have more plants than a botanical park ^_^

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I concur. Have you tried this one? http://www.hortico.com/roses/view.asp?action=sbcn&catno=SHHACH10

I think Thom eats some of his plants or sprinkles them about in his neighbor's yard. Patti

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Congrats on your DD's june wedding and the potted plants thing sounds very practical to me. After all waste not want not especially when plants are involved. Will the color scheme go with your garden? LOL

Here is another rose site to check out. http://www.palatineroses.com/search/ Oh yes one for every birthday and first step and first word and etc...etc. All great accomplishments should be marked with a growing monument don't you think. :)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I did go to Hortico - It's $14.95 for the rose - and $24.00 to ship! YIKES! A forty dollar rose?

I will see if I can find another source first.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Palatine is in Canada. You might be able to stop by enroute!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

You could call or email David A. to see who they sell to in BC. Or maybe email a BC Rose society and ask for local help.

That would be a pricey rose at 40.00 Patti

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

My yard is slowly becoming less yard and more garden, which I am totally and completely fine with. From the back of the house, to the bottom of the property, it's about 150x40. The yard grades down, and gradually widens. Last year I took a 1/4 of the back yard and made the raised bed with most of the DL's I bought last year ( I don't believe '08 is already last year!) so this year I plan on taking on the other 1/4, installing a small pond, another raised bed, and a whole bunch of DL's. Also the shrub/tree line is going between my neighbors property and my property all the way down. So I'm going to be planting on a sloping hill, for about 150'...lol.

That does seem like a lot of work.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Thom your plans sound wonderful. A lot of work? Are you kidding I am worn out just thinking about it. You will do a fine job and I think we should see some before and after pics maybe? (subtle hint that) Don't forget some pics of all those lovely DLs. I went to the DL site and checked out some of your beauties, very nice.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thom's house needs to be put on the garden tour!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Patti - I am checking out those links. ^_^

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Congrats on the new grandbaby, Michaela. Grands are GREAT!!! Also, Congrats, Drumlin, on the upcoming wedding. I LIKE your idea abaout plants for the ceremony migrating to your garden afterward.
HMMM... new plans. Well, I'm with venu on rearranging, dividing, pruning, etc. However, I have ordered some alliums and some caladiums, but not as many as JoAnn. Mom will be able to sit in a jungle on the deck this summer. Oh, I also am going to try wintersowing some seeds I saved from last year. Have never done that before, so the jury is out on the success of that attempt. But, other than that, nothing comes to mind. OOPS, my bad, I want to check out some witch hazel and JMs from Fariweather. Actually, the kitchen is going to be worked on this summer. I've only been dreaming about it for a few years. Demo a wall, etc. DH snagged some soapstone from a company that closed up, so that will be in the plans and he has been drawing up plans for the cabinets.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I am returning to this thread WAY too late, as usual!
My congrats, Seandor! You are going to LOVE being a grandma!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Congrats! Michaela and Drum.
I have plans to do a veggie garden this year. and now with the puppies have to find way to keep them out of the garden I started last year.
Louise, sounds like your trying too hard to convince yourself not to buy anything, lol

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Jen I am working very hard at NOT buying, but as hard as I work at that, it is nothing compared to the work you're going to be doing keeping the pups out of the garden. lol Good luck with that!!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You know . . . I know I am supposed to LOVE being a grandma - but I have to give up my gardens for six weeks this summer . . . (gosh, what a self-centred b*&^% I am!) Well, I guess seeing this is the first baby of the next generation I have to go - but honestly, I would rather go at Christmas when junebug will be six months old and a lot more fun. sigh . . .

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Ha ha. Spoken like a true gardener. Actually the new mom and baby need to bond ya know and they do just sleep and poop at first and oh your right, duty first I guess. You will be thrilled to be there but the best part of being a grandparent is they don't go home with you. All the fun without all the work. Then there is as the years go along the revenge factor. When your kids complain about theirs, you get to have that little smirk on your face and say....remember when you.... :)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

FINALLY my DD said "How did you do it Mom?"
What a great moment that was.
Love the wee one as long as you can, they will ignore you later on.
Going home alone? The best!
There is a reason we have babies when we are young and strong.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Yep!

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for not making me feel like a total heel. I calculate it will cost $6,500 + to drive the truck and camper across the continent, pay for campsites, groceries etc. We expect to be gone for six weeks.

You know . . . right about now would be a good time to win the lottery ^_^

South Hamilton, MA

Try to get weeds out & plants in a partially shaded bed. Hover over the iris seed boxes encouraging germination. Remember to prune the 2 roses this yr.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I noticed weeds growing today. It's January, don't they ever take a break??

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Well at least you have something growing even if it isn't very welcome. I wouldn't mind seeing a dandelion right about now. LOL

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I agree! A happy yellow dandelion would be a welcomed sight, for sure!

I would probably eat it, flower and all

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Call me crazy - but I am growing a couple of batchelor buttons in my basement in hopes of getting some flowers early

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Cool seandor. I'm thinking petunias.
