New Years Blooms

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Here is a new thread that can carry us over into the new year. This will be especially handy for those of us who have a few blooms going now, that may not be the best in a few days!

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/932507/

Oh, what adorable lil' pups! I really, really miss having a dog in the family! Someday we will adopt another one or two but for now we are down to 3 older kitties. Went to visit my sister and BIL and family for Christmas. They have 3 large dogs, one giant breed. This is BIG "Bubba" the English Mastiff, 3 years old and he weighs @ 215 pounds. The Vet has him on a special diet to gain weight because he is underweight.

He would love the little Chi's ... he is a Gentle Giant!

He is beautiful Lin, We have a couple of them that come into my work... You are right about being gentle dogs.. They are lovers...

Yes, he is a sweetheart of a Giant dog. My sister and her husband also have a yellow lab that weighs 105 and a black lab/chow mix that weighs right at 95. Big dogs that have NO TRAINING! They are all lovable critters but it always scares me to be around them because they are like a pack of 3 year olds vying for attention! They knock each other out of the way trying to get petted, and jump around ... I am always so scared of getting knocked down and breaking a leg or something! They don't know sit, stay, or the word no, LOL. My BIL always jokes about the lab flunking out of puppy kindergarden. He's the only one they took to puppy obedience training and they never reinforced it. We have always been a big dog type family but my DH and I believe in obedience training ... and I think it's REALLY important with the large breed dogs. It's almost impossible to control them on a leash when they want to do things their way and drag you along!

I agree Lin, Even my little dogs know how to behave and our Dolly knows she does not get pet until she sits... At work people think it is cute to say Oh the dog does not like being here so it may bite you.... I look at them and say sorry they are not going to bite me... We have people tell us that there dog comes into there living room and growls and they have to get off the sofa... Yeah not in my world...LOL

Susan

LOL, I have always felt dogs have the brains of 2 or 3 year old humans and Obedience is a MUST!

Bubba is such a huge dog that it is really hard for him to lower himself to the floor to lie down. His legs shake and shake as he slowly lowers himself. So, most of the time when he wants to sit, he just backs up to a chair or sofa and plops down. He sometimes will sit right in your lap ... not comfortable when the dog weighs 215! Here my sister was sitting reading the paper and he tried to sit in her lap ... she had to scootch over to the corner because he wanted to sit right where she was sitting.

He's also so tall that he is at eye level with the kitchen counters ... LOL, you can't leave any food on the counter for 5 minutes! He walks over to the table in the breakfast nook and rests his chin on the table. Funny Dog!

Here's my kitty - he will be 17 years old this coming May.

Oh how cute they all are... Now I can understand the dog having to sit on the sofa and also resting on the table.. But if my dog comes into a room and growls and shows his teeth for me to leave a chair... I don't think so.....
Hugs,
Susan

Syru, what a handsome Shepherd and beautiful kitty! We have 3 cats, 14, 13 and 11.

We had one cat live to be 24 years old ... well, actually we had to have her euthanized two months before her 24th birthday. She was a solid black cat but by the time she was 20 her entire muzzle was gray and her whiskers turned gray and her front paws too.

Sue: My sisters dogs don't growl, snarl or ever show their teeth. They are all big, lovable dogs, just aren't trained to mind. Bubba is the only one who is so big he can back up to a chair and sit down but he never growls. He is a big baby.

I could never be comfortable with a dog that showed his teeth and growled at me! That is a sign of dominance and the human should be the dominant one. They will try to be the authority if you let them. That Alpha dog mentality.

This is my sisters yellow lab "Zach"

Wow! Y'all have such beautiful plants blooming right now! I only have one little Chirita tamiana that just finished blooming ... no other gessie's with flowers at the moment. Maybe if I took better care, and fed them once in awhile I'd see blooms, ya think? LOL.

I sure enjoy seeing everyone else's lovelies though! Keep em' coming!

Oooh Gail, I don't know Strep's but that sure is a beauty! I went looking through the images you've uploaded. Could it be 'Kim'? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/162729/

Can someone show me a picture of how you use matting with wicks? Roxanne had sent me some picture but I lost them... So any help would be great... some of my plants are staying to wet with the grid and wicking so I want to try some c. matting....

I would like some info on using mats too. I have two trays of leaves with babies. I don't know if the mats should be soaking wet or just damp. Are the little pots supposed to have wicks, or can you just sit the pots on the mats? Hopefully, someone can teach us how to use the mats.
All the blooms are georgeous, and I love seeing all the pets. Here's my little guy, Shanghai. He is a peke (don't know correct spelling of pekingese) and two years old.
