Terese-I thought he was going to a new home??

SW-LOVE the puppy-I am working on DH for another dog-maybe this next year...

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

ROFLOL... Fairy, you're right, Terese was just supposed to be Charlie's pit stop on the way to his new home... but there was a glitch with his first home and then with his second, as which point Terese decided Charlie WAS home already. Her son had completely fallen for him, and she & DH weren't far behind... you should see all the toys etc. in his cushy new digs! Charlie landed in the cream, for sure. :-)

Hardy har har,

I happen to know perfectly well that "Ugliosus fantasticisissimusical" is the latin name for any musical that is so bad that it is good. Kinda like the car wreck you can not look away from. Silly music, silly cast, silly lyrics, like "what do you do with a B.A. in English?" Not some off, off, off Broadway thing, these Musicals go on the road and infect the entire country. I do not take any thing away from Avenue Q, I'm just sayin' is all.

And, dare I include, Spam-a-lot, another "Ugliosus fantasticisissimusical" in spite of the parentage. But now for something completely different.

Happy New Year, keep smilin'

Happy New YEars Everyone! I slept a little late because I actually stayed up past midnight for once! The last 3 or 4 years, I've fallen asleep before the ball drops.
SingingWolf -your pup is so cute!
Tcs I love your new kitty he is so adorable, but I can see your gonna have to set down the rules for computer time lol! : )

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Terese - he certainly knows where to hang out for some lovin'!

I got some great news this morning, my friend's blog on Hort magazine's site is up and running. Take a look for some more laughs, and some very good gardening ideas. The gal knows her plants like few other folks I've run into:
http://www.hortmag.com/kissmyaster

We actually stayed up until midnight too - can't remember the last time I was able to do that!

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Well, I fell a sleep a few minutes after ten. What a bummer. Missed all the good music and woke up a few minutes after midnight as usual. No ball watchign again this year, but at least I did get to see Dick Clark wish everybody a Happy New Year adn good night before the show went off.

Listened to the rest of the music numebrs that was on, danced aroudn to a few, playe don Dg adn finalyl went to bed about 4 this mornign and didn't get up til 8. I ws alzy bones this mornign adn for sure wil be lookig for aquickie nap this afternoon.

So what ya all eat for good luck today. Tradition down here is greens and blackeyed peas and pork.

When I lived up North our meal was ribs with this special sauce that had pineapple and green peppers and stuff in it and mashed pototoes and green beans.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I like the sound of the ribs and stuff - making my mouth water even this early! We'll be having pasta and sweet Italian sausage - Nora's mostly Italian so we kinda stick with her traditions around New Years. My family is predominantly German and I'm no fan of sauerkraut....

Sorry you missed some of the music Star, but you know you aren't missing out on good wishes from all of us!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I am getting the last of my seeds packed today to mail tomorrow Ella-sorry to be the last one-I will post the DC# tomorrow after I get to the PO:)

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

You all quoting the spamming Monte Python had me mention it to DH and now he is gleefully spamming through youtube episodes - the best spamming way to start the new year. Oh my.

SW - that has got to be the cutest little face of a puppy! It appears that he has one blue eye and one brown - or is that due to a reflection or shadow? I find dual colored eyed animals most interesting....even humans. Know a gal like that.

Happy New Year little piggies!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

YouTube is definitely addictive! I showed Nora the Knights of Ni spot, and before I knew it she was off laughing at all sorts of Monty Python stuff. And to think the original reason I got on there was to watch Dave's spot on how to make paper pots....

Edited to add - watching the Rose Parade too, as it's a family tradition, even if I'm the only one doing it anymore! We lived out there for a while, and went to the Parade once (too crowded), but the thing I liked the most were the times we went to see the floats after the parade. They park all the floats (I think it's near the Rose Bowl, don't quote me on that) and you can walk around and get nearly within reaching distance of them. It's truly amazing to see their construction up close and see all the things they use to create those things.

I'll take Monty pythyonius over Lawrence Welkiardiharhar any day - lol PullTab

Cute critters, all

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Fairy.... Sounds good! : )

Pull Tab.. Besides your survior seeds the seeds to help rebuild your neighborhood community, gonna put them in the same package. Wil mark them community and you can pass out from there. You can look through incase their somethgin else in their you want that didn't get in your trough.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Did it seem to any of you Select Seeds is offering fewer seeds and more plants? So many of the plants they're selling for 5.95 (a lot of annuals) I'd way rather start from seed.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Happy New Years everyone!
Yes, Chele, the puppy has one brown eye and one blue eye. Also reddish spots on his body.
Star, I missed the ball dropping myself, but I have a good excuse, please take a look at this. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/898616/
I felt it would give us all a good start with good heart for the New Year.
I love watching the Rose Parade. DH hid my tv/cable remote, but I will find it and watch one of the re runs. They play it all day here. Dryad, you are not alone, I am the only who watches it now in my family too. My sons would rather play computer games and DH would rather watch football. LOL! : )
The Monty Python clips were a great way to spend the evening! I laughed so hard on some of them, my face still hurts! : )

I need help if ya can or Singing Wolf maybe ya cna giv eme some ideas too.

What kinds of seed goes with " natural forage for critters?"

Ya got me stumped.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Happy 2009 everyone!

Our New Year's day food tradition is pork and kraut too. Usually we stick a roast or ribs smothered in kraut in the oven and let it simmer all afternoon then eat it up with mashed taters.

I had one particular interesting New Year's dinner when I visited my brother in OR. He's a firm believer that you can't have too much good luck so he's adopted all the traditions he's ever been exposed too. Of course we had pork and kraut, and after having a souther room mate in college black-eyed peas were added to the menu too. (None of us like them mind you, and we swallowed them like pills with our dinner beverage, LOL. But still we "ate" them for the good luck.) After that it really got interesting as my SIL is japanese. Her traditions included some little candies and wanton type thingies that were really quite tasty. I didn't notice that my luck was all that improved after the meal, but my brother pointed out what it might have been had I NOT eaten all that "good luck food." Good point.

Anybody else thinking about starting some seeds today? Haha

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

Happy New Year! ^_^

Yeah Lala, I've been thinking about starting some seeds but am making myself list some seeds for sale first. I need the $! :)

I'm afraid I haven't been very festive. I went to sleep around 9 last night and haven't eaten any lucky foods today, just frozen pizza. :)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ooh frozen pizza is lucky ? : ) I had some too, and here I was worried I didn't eat anything lucky. lol

Star, I found a tag for some seeds that I sent for you, I wrote pink and white on them. Well, I found out they are called Wave Misty Lilac. I just wanted to let you know so you'd know wether you need em or not : )

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Yep, thinkign abotu it, but it gonna be a bit before I can get to starting any. Can't imagine why. ROFLOL

My lucky diner was a banquet tv dinner of preprocessed rolled chunked and diced and otherwise unrecognizable piece sof chicken and rice and brocolli head seeds pieces with imatation cheese in starchy to salty sauce. Was fillign though.

Meridith. Oh goodie! Thansk for lettign me know. : )

GA, GA(Zone 7b)

Well, I think frozen pizza is only lucky in the fact that if you eat it, it means you aren't starving!

However, pepperonis do look like coins and the whole thing is made of "dough" so maybe it'll bring financial prosperity. Hey, it makes as much sense as the traditional lucky foods! ;)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I wished I had more of them, to share, and I think I just found some more of them. They were next to the tag in a bowl so I'm pretty sure they are. It figures it's after I sent them. I slacked off with labeling towards the end of my seed collecting. Now I am going through stuff that didn't look like I'd get more than five seeds. Some of it isn't labeled and I don't know what they are and have had to guess. So does any one recognize these? I have no idea, they must be something I've never collected before because they aren't even sparkin my imagination at all.

Danita I didn't have pepperonis! NOw I'm ship out of luck. : ( JK

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Meredith - the pod looks like a daylily, but the seeds sure don't. Wish I could help!

Lala - Jan. 2, 3, 6 and 7 are good days for planting above ground crops, and Jan.10-11 is good for seed beds, according to planting by the moon. I'm getting trays ready tonight so that I can get some seeds started on the second and third. I'm hoping I can get some WS stuff done on the 6, 7 and perhaps 10-11 as well. I figure what the heck, following the old traditions can't hurt!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks dryad, : )
I am wondering if they could be leadwort seed. Aka Ceratostigma plumbaginoides
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/876/ That's the only thing I can think of right now.

Added probably not, I think the seed capsule is too big.

This message was edited Jan 1, 2009 6:44 PM

hi all

i figured that you all stopped chatting for awhile but it got too long then i had to look and found you all so i got lost for awhile

i did not get a dmail about the pepper coop yet

these look like cosmos seed>?

happy new year 2009 !!

it has been storming with rain and wind. At least the snow is all gone. It is warming up to 40s but very very wet here. Snow might return tomorrow. I have had no luck getting outside and doing any winter sowing yet as i hate to get all soaking wet.

There be truth in them old traditions. Thanks for the heads up, dryad, on the lunar planting cycles. I'll have to see if my new Book has them listed, and plant accordingly.
I bought a deli cooked Malibu Chicken (seasonings I guess), made baked potatoes and salad (from the bag), for dinner.
Pizza is round shaped like a coin. It is made of "dough" and has plenty of fat in it, all are symbols of prosperity. Sounds good to me. All food has nourishment, some for the body, some for the soul! : )
Chocolate and pizza fit both categories! : )
Our South American friends surprised me one year. At the stroke of midnight, they grabbed their suitcases and headed out the door. Why? Because they believe that what you are doing at midnight will happen during the year. They wanted to travel. : )
Last night at midnight, I was pushing a button to share a photo Dad sent me of Rainbows. (See link above)
I wonder what that means I'll be up to this year. Hmmm. How do you make a deep in thought face? Giggle.

I was thinking about planting today, but that's about as far as it will get. With Star, ROTFLOL!
Star, I did get to ask EB#1 about the Endangered wild Helianthus swarzti (sp?). He said that it will cross pollinate with my natives. So it would not be good for me to be a host. Need someone in that area.

About natural forage for wild things, depends on the critter. One example (for me) would be like the strawberry tree from previous posts. Also any sunflower type seed, or other berries which the birds like. Then there are the nectar producers which attract HBirds and Bflys, food for the caterpillers. I don't feed bunnies on purpose, and there are no deer left around here. Sorry, that it was such an open ended request, I'll be more specific in the future. My Bad! : (

Have any of you noticed the Rudbeckia - Branched Coneflower 'Prairie Glow'? It looks intriguing.

Hey Robin thanks for the moon planting info. Now I'm going to show my ignorance and ask what the difference is in "above ground crops" and "seed beds."

above ground crops would be anything other than potatoes, carrots, turnips , peanuts..etc

seedbeds are finely tilled soil for direct sowing

thats all i know

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

lala - don't feel ignorance on your part it is not something I was taught either so am learning. I was wondering what the difference is between above ground annual and planting for root growth, especially flowers and herbs - some of which are also above ground annuals. It's all somewhat confusing. ^_^ Never a stupid question.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

LOL - I'm so glad pam jumped in with the answer as mine was going to be a WAG! I'm hoping my WS sort of counts as seedbeds... The Moon Gardening thread has some great information from folks who are much more experienced than I - check it out for some more detailed info.

Here's the link to the pepper co-op, in case you need it.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/938361/

Neal, I'm getting a bit cautious about those new Rudbeckias and Echinaceas - it may be me, but they don't seem to be as hardy as the older ones. I got sis some of the orange and yellow Echs, and they didn't survive two winters. Although that 'Prairie Glow' sure does look nice....

We're watching the new Major League Baseball Network (can't help it, I grew up with a Grampa who was a BIG Cardinals fan, and I run a fantasy baseball league with some friends and cousins...). They're playing the entire 1956 World Series game that was a perfect game...and I'm having cookies and milk while watching in honor of my Grampa :-) It don't get much better than this!

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

OK since I just got a free pass to ask not-stupid questions, what about seeds started indoors? Are there any right and wrong times for those? I guess I could go check the forum out myself, LOL, but it's fun to banty these questions around here too.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Whew! I've spent the afternoon/evening uploading seed and seedling images from my spread sheet into Plantfiles. I added about 50 photos and I'm about 1/2 way there. I encourage you all to add any images you might have as well....there are few things (to me) as frustrating as NOID seeds and seedlings at planting time.

hi
dates for sowing indoors..most annuals and some veggie transplants are started 8 to 10 ( maybe 12 depending on what ) weeks before your last frost date. the reason for this is because the transplants get too tall and get languished or root bound and will not grow optimally if you do not plant them out at that time. The annuals grow pretty fast so this is for the optimum growing experience.

I was so mad yesterday-went to pack up the Hibiscus seeds and they started moving and bug were in the seeds and they all had holes!!!!!

How do I prevent this in the future and of course I am sorry to anyone who wanted hibiscus seeds from me as they are now ruined:(

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Fairy, what did the bugs look like? I had that happen with the first Snapdragon seeds I brought in to dry, little black bugs with a red band around the middle, about the size of a lady bug.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

Lala - as far as starting seeds indoors vs. outdoors by the moon, I treat them both the same.
