Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #21

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

ooooo - SW, that's beautiful!

And I think Ni is much easier than the new name they picked....

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

Wow SW - that is beautiful.....and is that a teepee frame? I want to come out to a pow wow with you! ^_^

Someone on the WS forum just told us about gardening by the moon, which I have heard of - so took a peek. It says that Jan 10th - 16th is prime for WS. The idea of gardening by the moon sounds just as logical as WS so I'm in. Hee hee. We have had abnormally high temps for this time of year and even set a record - it's been in the 50's & 60's. We have had some cold, but with the warm temps, I'm waiting until the good moon tells us to sow.

Drooling over those piggy troughs Star! You teaser......

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Pull Tab.. LOL Thanks fo rth einformation and the chuckles. : )

Singing Wolf. In Germany they don't have such things as closets and dressers like we have in the states. If you have a room a person can stand up in it, it is taxable. Germans pay tax on every room they have i their homes. And we thinkwe go tgot some high weird taxes. The closet thing I cna find for an Americna word is somethign like and entertainment center/ shiferrobe closet type thing. The German word is shrunk. Mien gets fileld with alot of junk. ; )

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I had no idea I was such a piggy until I started trying to figure out how to make journal entries. I'm sending out like 16 packages, plus extras and getting back over forty. All I can say is OINK!
I've always heard that you should sow your seeds on the new moon so that they will have a boost as the moon waxes (increases in size). Don't know if the new moon corresponds with those dates, I'll have to look it up.
Dryad, dare I ask what the new name is? Oh, the chittering noise he made. Duh! (I'm slow when I have a fever.)
Yep! Them is tipi poles. Sort of look natural there, don't they? It is one of my favorite views here on the farm. So can you blame me for going out with my camera (even though I still have a fever and am out of apple cider vinegar : ( )?
Good thing my kids drink so much milk, so I can be ready for the winter sowing. I've been saving both milk and apple juice containers for a while, so I should be okay. If I'm not, I'll get those kids drinking more milk! LOL!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

oh yes... that Gardening by the Moon forum is neat... i dont post much [did a bit last year] but i do read a lot.

SW -- i was like that last year... sent out what i had, which wasn't much... and took back about 200 varieties of seeds.
though last year was different because Suzy got a "wine box" full of seeds from Weezen up in Alaska.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

So it's like a wardrobe or Ent. Ctr? A Standing Holding Room Trunk? I have a cedar chest and a blanket chest but no shrunks! Boy am I glad I don't live in Germany. California is bad enough!
Sorry our posts crossed. LOL still about the pops from the rattle pods. : )
Dinner is on! You know what the littlest piggy got!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I finally got my box of seeds mailed out. Sorry it took so long, with the weather, Christmas, Grandkids, and being sick for a week, I just can't catch up. Star, you are certainly working hard on this project, thank you. I really appreciate the effort everyone has put into this. I can't wait to get the goodies now!!!

Nepeta cataria is the one usually referred to as Catnip.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/8685/

It has more of the stuff cats like, but isn't all that ornamental. Also really good for calming tea and good for an upset tummy. Nepeta x faassenii is the one typically called Catmint. My cats have never been quite as interested in it, unless I've just bruised some leaves, so I figure the essential oil isn't quite as concentrated. They're the ones used most often as an ornamental.

(Zone 7a)

Lynn, you've got lots of company - all of which enabled me to send an extra envie of seeds this past Monday to Ella - the more we wait, the more seeds will come in - many thanks to Ella for accommodating us - it's been beyond rough for quite a few of us.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Ah! One of today's articles is about Catnip!

http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2016/

(Zone 7a)

Neal, once on a hike, we noticed that someone had dumped a bird cage by the parking lot. How I wish I had snarfled it up - that would have been just the thing through which to grow Nepeta cataria - the neighborhood cats would have had a hard time making a moonscape out of that!

The only member of the genus Nepeta I've been able to grow in my garden without attracting every cat within 10 miles to roll in it is Nepeta sibirica 'Souvenir d'Andre Chaudron'. This is such a pungently stinking plant, that I can grow and flower the Black Beauty lily up through it in spite of woodchucks and rabbits romping around in the vicinity. Eventually, the woodchucks will obliging get into the Havahart case, and I suspect a fox controls the rabbits, so the Siberian catnip isn't defending the lilies alone - but I'm sure it's a big help.

There are many definitions of what a cottage garden is, but to me, a cottage garden mixes useful herbs and vegies among the flowers...wish someone would dump another bird cage by that parking lot

Karen

(Zone 7a)

Cute article about catnip, Neal. I wuvs me cats (J.T. and St. Ray) and apologize if I sounded too snarky about what their brothers and sisters do to my garden.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Read the kitty nip article. Was good and loved the kitty pics.

This supposed to be a fun swap, don't stress getting yoru seeds here. They all getting here as weather and situations allow. We actually moving alogn really good. Ya all gona have lots to keep ya busy over the coldest and worsest parts of winter for sure.

Just don't blame the sender when ya all got all these little bitty seedlings to be transplantign liek crazy. heheheheh I refuse to take the blame. ; )

Beautiful Brazoria C, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay, Okay,

I used a little bit of 'piggie latin' in describing the Nepata family. So it is Nepeta cataria, not Nepeta cat-like-yummy-us, it should have been Nepeta catlikeyummyia. Whoda thunk?

I stand corrected, I flunked out of the Master Gardeners' Program through UCDavis and another one in the Great State of Rhode Island.

Ank-thay ou-yay, Ar-stay for all your work for us little piggies.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

hehehehehhehe : )

Today get to see how good my basketball pitchign arm is. I flunked out paper wads into the school trash cans, so should be fun.

Then again, I had thought abotu playign 52 pick up with the seeds. Just puttign all the buckets in a big tight circle and goign wheeeeeeeee. LOL

I just have to keep y back door closed when I not sitting here so that th elittle birdie that likes to fly in and raid my cheese nips box doesn't try and fly off with any seeds.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have a "little birdie" who raids snacks here too... but mine is wingless and rather tall.

With apologies, my box is finally in the mailbox also (I used click 'n ship). Starlight had asked me to wait until after I returned from the Christmas holiday so the box wouldn't be in the holiday mail crush, but I caught a stomach bug and ended up staying on a bit longer than expected. I used a small box, thinking that way I'd surely be under 1 pound for shipping -- not! The box weighted 1 and a quarter pounds. :-)

If I missed anything that somebody wanted, just LMK... we'll work it out.

Starlight, I'll Dmail you with the delivery confirmation number, for whatever good it does, LOL.

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

PullTab, I kinda thought your first latin version was good! We inherited some version of catnip in the back yard, which I'm not crazy about as we don't have cats and our dogs LOVE to go running out there to chase them off. So I end up pulling the catnip when i see it, but it's a particularly hardy variety that seems to have little root volunteers all over the place. It smells nice though, so I don't mind it much when I'm weeding. If only the mulberry trees they let go were as easy to get out!

Hey Lynn and Jill - hope you're both feeling better! So far so good here (knock wood!). Sis keeps telling me to get that flu shot, and I keep telling her that the only flu that comes around isn't covered by the shot.....she's an RN so it makes for some interesting glares from her - LOL!

SW - I think the new name (from Knights of Ni) is something along the lines of Knights of Ikyikyikyikypataangzooopoing....or something like that. I think I'll stick with Ni - LOL! Perhaps next year we should have a picture of Roger the Shrubber....

I hadn't checked the Gardening by the Moon forum for WSing yet - thanks for that! I've got to go read that and get updated. Sis gave me a wonderful calendar last year for Christmas - the kind given out by the local utility company and it has all sorts of great info crammed on each day, including good days for fishing. I waxed so rhapsodic over it that she gave me another one this year (this one's from the Feed & Farm Supply Co!), so at least I can look at the calendar real quick to see what phase the moon is in, and check the almanac bits for our part of the country. She and I always look at the almanac and compare it with what's really happened/happening. Not sure what we'd do if we found it was really off, so far it's been pretty close to what our actual weather has been.

OK, off to read the Moon threads, and the article on Catnip. Hope everyone's having a good New Year's Eve!!
Robin

(Edited to say - PullTab, don't worry about that Master Gardener thing, I've discovered plenty of folks with that designation who don't know a fraction of what you know from real life experiences. One of them actually made it all the way through the class without learning a darn thing and got his certificate anyway, as the test was open book!)

PullTab, don't mind me. I can do lotsa stuff with Latin besides spell a few things right. Have you heard of Ugliosus fantasticisissimusical? I'll bet there isn't a plant on earth that, one time or another, hasn't had a bad day and therefore hasn't fallen under that appellation. It's not just for plants - many's the day I've had a bad hair day and looked into the mirror - Ack!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I was flipping thru a seed catalog this morning when i stumbled onto the page with Marigolds...

i have a seed, which a few of you are getting... it was that photo i posted with the dried spent blooms on a paper plate, and i just called them burgundy and orange, short, French doubles .. .something like that...

well in this catalog they have one that looks just like it called... "Boy oh Boy" Marigolds.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Phew, lots to catch up on. I'm visiting my parents and in-laws, with little time for the computer. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Closest I'm getting to seeds this week is looking at different types of pollen under my daughter's new microscope! Dried up bugs, bird feathers, ... maybe I can look at some seeds when we get home!

Happy New Year!! Starlight, you can shake those rattleboxes instead of a noisemaker at midnight :)

Orrville, OH(Zone 5b)

I've been receiving seed catalogs all week. Thanks to this swap I will look at them and have enough self control not to order because I know have so many nice seeds coming from this swap. Then today the Select Seeds catalog came and I've been highlighting names and turning corners down to mark the pages. I have this tremendous urge to send out a humongous order for seeds That there is simply no room to plant. Now I'm perfectly aware that everyone here is suffering the same Plant Acquisition Disorder that I suffer from so this is the wrong place to come for support but I just want to warn you DO NOT OPEN THE SELECT SEED CATALOG.
It's probably safest to have another family member to check the mail for the next few weeks and be sure they destroy all catalogs before you even know they came. If any participants here know of a support group then please share it with the rest of us.

I hope everyone is having a happy holiday season and have a wonderful New Years.

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

LOL! I have been receiving catalogs as well and am SO excited. As soon as I read your post I ran out to the mail box to see if I'd gotten the Select Seed Catalog, but no. Hee hee. I'm not sure if I'm signed up to receive this one. You are right, you'll not find the right kind of support from me - I've got some highlights to see if they come in my piggy feed bag...........if not.....I....just......have.........to...........have........more!! Actually, I think I need a new house with more land. DH is cringing. ha!

Scottsburg, IN(Zone 6a)

My Plant Acquisition Disorder is trying to be triggered by the Baker Creek Heirloom catalog. Glossy, full color, perfect-bound......I just put it in the magazine basket and am trying not to open it - LOL!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

ROTFL maozamom!
I call the seed catalogs my wish books! I like to look then I get mad, because everything I really want, they don't ship to my state. Never-the-less I can not resist the store flowers. I just bought a beautiful red Amaryllis today. It hasn't begun to bloom yet. But after it does, it will go live in my B.fly/H.bird garden. : )
Chele, I can just see you jumping up to race out to check the mail! : )

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

So we all have PAD (Plant Acquisition Disorder)!
I was reading your posts to DH, because he wanted to know why I was laughing. When I got to the part where maozamom said to have a family member dispose of the catalogs before you get to them, he said, "Thats what I do!" I was wondering what happened to my catalogs. Now I know! (Little does he know it won't work, te he!)
Quit making me drool dryad.
I don't get either of the two catalogs you all just mentioned, hmmm. I can fix that!
LOL!

LOL... Laughign my head off. I knw I have a major plant and seed disorder. Was raised on corn farm when wa slittle, just seems my tastes have gotten bigger than corn kernnels.

Man, I got so many seed and plant catalogs. The burpree one is one I look forward too seeing, then there is th etulip ones. A man they make me drool and can't order a one of them, since they don't grow here.

before ya get really tempted with the catalogs, ya can make some really cool garden or house art with them. notMartha ( Dori) take s all them catalogs and makes the most beautiful decorated balls. She gets used bowlign balls for free and makes liek these calogaes (sp?) from all the pretty pics. Wil have to see if I cna get her to come over here and post her directions adn show ya some pics. Think she may have posted some of them on the Daylily forum, but not sure.

So while yoru spouses may be tryign to hide them catalogs, tell em ya got a good use fo rthem after ya get done orderign from em. : )

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

I did run outside to the mailbox - didn't even put my coat on - it's COLD! If you don't get the Select Seed catalog....... http://www.selectseeds.com/

Hello, my name is Michele and I have a need for seeds!

Orrville, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh Dryad, the Baker Creek Heirloom catalog is another wonderful catalog. Unfortunately the only full sun I have is in my front yard and a little 4X7 bed at the south side of the house. That only allows me to grow a minimum of vegetables. A couple of tomatoes, a lemon cuke, and a small amount of leaf lettuce are all I do and even with that some people think it's strange.

Starlight, My Dh and I bowled for many years. There's a number of balls sitting in my basement and winter is awfully long in N.E. Ohio. Maybe if I cut the catalogs up right away I won't be tempted to buy anything.

Sw, you have to get these catalog. You don't want to miss any great seeds.

Chele, checking your mail if important but put your coat on first. We wouldn't want you to get sick.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Oh, Chele,
I have to laugh. You want to rhyme do you?
I am a piggy
With a greed
to feed
on piggy seed! : )
star, thanks for sharing.
I've seen docorative paint used on old bowling balls but never seen a collage before. (Bad chelle has me rhyming!) : )
I think I'm going to go down to the thrift store and see if anyone got a new one for Christmas! Then I'll recycle the old one or three!

Oh, the Baker Creek Heirloom catalog is gorgeous this year. They must be doing well to print such an expensive full color catalog. Although I have to say, the photo of his wife looking glamorous next to an exceptionally large cylindrical squash made both my mother and I giggle a little.

Edmond, OK(Zone 7a)

Hee hee - I noticed I was rhyming....however my intent was to introduce myself to seeds anonymous. Hello, my name is......and yes I'm a piggy.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I googled it and found you can order a catalog online here http://rareseeds.com/request2/
for the Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds Catalog.
Meet my new friend "Spirit". He is a gift from DH. He is an Australian Shepherd. Puppy breath and that face!
Happy New Year, may all your gardens grow an abundance of flowers, food, and fruits! : )

Off to find Jill's pepper seed co-op!

We decided to watch a couple movies tonight - just finished Hell Boy II (quite a good movie), and are about to queue up The Triplets of Belleville. I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy New Year!
