last year i picked up lots of pointsettas, amarylus bulbs and living christmas trees (bushes?)--hope i find some this year--anyone have any good bargains they'd care to share the locations of?
after christmas sales
Lowes here in El Paso dropped the prices for Christmas cactus starting last week. Also for paperwhites and pointsettias. No leftover Amaryllis in that location...
HD here doesn't do too much sales in the plant dept...
oh i forgot about christmas cactus! did you buy anything? i do not like paperwhites because i don't like the smell when they bloom
very pretty--was it a gift to yourself? i'm glad i got myself stocking gifts or my stocking would have been empty!!
Well, I'm calling it a gift from my hubby... we went shopping together, I chose, he payed!
They also had some rosemary "Christmas trees", but they weren't on sale last week (the upright type). Maybe soon? Though I'm wishing for a trailing one.
a lot of husband gifts seem to go that way!! works tho doesn't it?
the rosemary trees are so pretty and smell great too --i have rosemary in my yard and grows like a bush -so easy! but if the price was right i might get a little rosemary tree for inside just for the smell!!!--a trailing one? not sure what that would look like
so it is a different kind of rosemary? different flavor too?
got myself a rosemary topiary--christmas cactus and small cedar table top tree with ornaments---fun, fun, fun!!!
Congrats on the stocking stuffers, Linda!
I saw the two rosemarys next to each other in HD. Except for the habit, they looked identical, leaves, flowers, smell. Didn't taste them...
The trailing rosemary is a bit different fragrance. I enjoy the smell but don't cook much with either. I have a small plant and where it is planted, it is a slow grower. I also have the regular. I have been training the trailing rosemary into growing around a hoop. One of the reasons I like it is it blooms more freely. Last time I walked thru the garden centers, we had just had a nasty freeze and all was mush. The gifts I select and DH pays for are "the best"! Guaranteed to get what I want that way ~ LOL
husbands like it too!! my husband picked out a jogging suit for me but when i held it up it was really small--he got it in the juniors rather than womens--i will be returning it but turns out i want a different color anyhow and now won't have to hurt his feelings
How sweet of him. I'd take that as a compliment!
i know--i held them up and thought "he thinks i am this size? god love him!"
I'm going to Lowe's today to see if they have amaryllis left and on sale. I love the rosemary. I have one in ground, but like others, I love the smell and would enjoy one inside. The first time I saw the trailing rosemary was in San Antonio around the river walk. It was in lots of the raised planters and blooming profusely. It smelled wonderful. I use it in cooking too. It's great on chicken or pork roast. I also chop it up finely and put it in yeast bread dough. It's wonderful on homemade bread with garlic butter. Not that I need any more pounds added. It's been decades since anyone would assume I'd fit in a junior size anything :)
I'll post back once I've been to Lowe's and let everyone know if they have any goodies in the plant dept.
Crow
well crow he got the large in juniors so i guess he thought large must work--i will tell you that large in a junior hoody is anything but large--they (meaning who the junior size is made for) like to wear it form fitting--not me!!
don't remember seeing my rosemary bloom--what kind of blooms?
i got the rosemary topiary and i have wanted to try topiary and this is just a round ball one so i am looking forward to trimming and keeping it in shape (does the ball just keep getting bigger or do i keep it the same size i wonder?)
i like rosemary as an herb but forget how many ways it can be used-thanks crow for some nice ideas--
you might want to check Calloway's...they might have some things..especially cactus...there is also a coupon online, sometimes....
oh and i forgot all about calloways!! how did i do that? thanks
Sorry all that I didn't post back about Lowe's. I never made it there. Two of my grandsons, ages 4 and 2, decided they just had to have a day at Grandma's. I was run ragged by the time the little darlin's were picked up by mom and dad. Whew, how come when there's two of them, the energy level becomes exponentially larger?
Because one runs in one direction, while the other one runs in the opposite direction. By the time you corral both of them, you've covered 3 times as much distance as just following one. Just think of them as being an excercise machine for Grandma. I remember those years. They always wanted to climb the "leaning" live oaks on the property and the smaller one had a totally unexplainable desire to stand on fire ant mounds! My grandson (the firstborn) is now a high school senior...where did all that time go? They're visiting SIL's family in Canada this holiday. Brrr!
I have tried rosemary in my garden twice and both times it died. Don't know what I am doing wrong. Would love to have some. Maybe I should try one in a pot on the patio.
mind does great outdoors--it is an evergreen so is green and usable all year long--it needs no care either--i have some in the ground and some in a huge pot--this is ;my first time to try and grow some indoors since i got a topiary
I think it does best in a fairly sunny area in well-drained soil. I planted one in poor sandy rocky soil with afternoon and evening sun. It thrived in that spot.
Hi Bobyrd.
You probably "loved" it too much, with water. {speaking from experience}
Mine get lots of sun, and a rare watering, now.
LindaTx, how funny about the "exercise machine" for Grandma. They sure are that. They can get into some of the darndest things.
Bobyrd, rosemary needs really well draining soil. Sun and drainage are about all it needs. If your soil is heavy clay, raise it on a small berm or use a pot. Mine does better in the ground than pots, but it's in a slightly raised bed. I love having it near a walkway where it smells so good when you brush by it.
I did finally make it to Lowe's yesterday. They didn't have any amaryllis left. They did have paperwhites, daffodils, tulips and some bearded iris. None of them were marked down at all. Still 10 bucks for 6 paperwhite bulbs. They obviously liked them more than I did so they got to keep them.
Good for you. I haven't made it into town as yet but going to the HGC in Missouri City tomorrow for the last days of the 70% off sale of this year. I usually go the last day of the year and stock up until spring. Hope they have something I can use.
Bobyrd, do you get Dyno Dirt in your area? I get mine in Denton & it's THE best soil. I have made my garden with it & replenish as necessary every year. It drains well & has natural nutrients as it's made from compost, but is great soil...I have never had anything as good, even Miracel grow isn't this good.
I am going to put rosemary in a container this year as it grew really large in my garden then it died, I guess it was old, I had it for 4 years. If you get the plant from Calloway's, or Lowe's they will replace it if it dies, just keep your receipt. As rosemary is a perennial.
I had a Rosemary bush for eight years ... it always turned brown, but it went back to green ... somedody thought it was dead and pulled it up. Its just terrible when you cant get out and watch what people are doing in your yard. I had that trailing Rosemary once too and it bloomed the prettiest purple flowers. ... but I never used it in cooking, I wish I could find another. Oh .. and btw I bought my Christmas Cactus last year from Krogers ... I was standing at the back door and saw it blooming like crazy ... bought it inside and put it in my bedroom ... what a treat that was. Its amazes me that two people could pass that cactus everyday and not notice the blooms ... and I saw it from a distance.
Hey Sylvia!!! Glad to see you surface. I hope you are on the mend and looking forward to retirement!
I keep trying to take a photo of my trailing rosemary bloom but it is elusive. Such a pretty purple bloom is right! Happy New Year all....
Yeah Pod ... you can root a piece for me and bring it the Spring RU. lol Yes I am looking foreward to retirement ... I think. lol It can be costly running around everyday ... when I go out the house it never cost me less than 50.00! I cannot afford that! :)
I have a trailing rosemary, "Irene", that needs serious trimming. I think there's 8 of them out there. I wish I were better at getting things to root......just don't have the patience right now.
Rooting has never been my forte either. If a cutting manages to develop roots, I disturb them by removing the cutting multiple times to admire them! LOL
Annette_M,
Maybe I could come over and do a "little trimming" on your trailing rosemary! Maybe I could get it rooted in a pot.
Bonnie
Bonnie, you can sure be my guest! Let me know.................
Annette
Yeah Bonnie ... go for it Actually I think any plant that spreads like that have developed roots anyway. Check it out Bonnie. ;)
Great Annette,
Maybe I can come over at a convenient time and clip some off!
Just send me a dmail
Bonnie
Bonnie you have dmail!
Don't forget your grocery stores. I got five amaryllis bulbs for $3,00 yesterday. One even had another bud coming up. They didn't have names, but at that price, who cares. I never met an amaryllis I didn't like.
