Winterberry questions and answers...

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

VV, I seem to like Oosterwijk and Chickemoo best. Chickemoo might be best for my dry conditions. Are these both red berries? Do they both get about the same size? Are their bloom times Different? What would be a good male for either of them? Keep in mind my dry conditions. Sorry for so many questions. I want something around 6 x 6. How late is late? Thanks

Dry conditions? Did you miss the part about "....southeastern PA is just about as close to the Garden of Eden as you can get for growing conditions in the US." ? I'm always watching out for snakes, and women with apples...

Seriously though, you could make a spot near a gutter downspout somewhere - these shrubs do like water.

Robins and catbirds have already been picking at 'Red Sprite' here. I have 'Jim Dandy' as a pollinator for it.

Claypa, I'm sure you have no problem encountering snakes and women with apples!! Sounds just like your cup of tea. LOL

I didn't want to put it up by the house, but out in my dryer beds. I want to be able to look out at it in the winter.

I have loved reading this thread. Thank you to all. I am currently in NC near VA border but am moving in 6 months or sooner to Massachusetts. Will be somewhere between Cape Cod and Boston. I am currently in the homestretch of a 2 year degree program in Horticulture and have decided a big part of my future passion ands business will be Ilex. I just joined the Holly Society and got my packet yesterday. I am so looking forward to the next annual meeting.

VV can you help me discern which chapter I would be a part of living in MA? Your Winterberries are beautiful and I understand completely how addictive they are, that is how I am concerning any Ilex that take a pyramidal form, though I also love compacta and soft touch!

OMG I can't wait to move and get started!

VV Thanks for all your pictures and info. I have four Ilex Verticullata 2 males and 2 females. I think my soil is much too alkaline for them. And this year we had severe freeze middle of Oct. and froze all the berries on my Ilex and Crabapples, except for Malus weeping Candied apple, protected somewhat by buildings.
So far this month have had no temps. above 25 degrees at any time, this morning 5 degrees, yesterday 3 degrees, Very cold for this time of year.

Wow Donna, that is cold for sure. We are still below freezing at the moment, I don't think it is going to go above 32 today and it was suppose to be in the 40's. A little colder than normal for NC, though we do get this in January and Feb, then we start warming up.
