Let's Talk Turkey - Year-End Edition

Thomaston, CT

I'm afraid hot peppers wouldn't work on the dale---when he had stitches the vet put on a substance no dog likes to ingest--he licked it off like gravy! Hey--I happen to be blonde---although my doctor told me I was "too blonde" the last time I saw him--told him time was marching on, & that the grey underneath was making me too blonde! This from someone without any hair!

She was throwing out all the W's!

Good golly. I am reading where a farmer uses human, chicken and other manure for his garden.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee - good one, Pam.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Oh, I got a bunch of 'em, mainly to annoy my blonde friends. Heh heh.

Human manure??? I know it's used (or used to be used) in China, but I'm thinking it would be a disease risk to just toss it in your compost pile. Not to mention icky.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Definitely ICKY!!!

FUKUOKA FARMING

"And I guarantee that anyone can farm this way. This method of 'do-nothing' farming is based on four major principles:

No cultivation.
No fertilizer
No weeding
No pesticides"

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Great name.

Yeah great name. I guess what I am reading is he started the lasagna bed. If you dig up the earth then you have messed with it. Harder earth. Good reading. If you have his 1st book its worth alot of money.

That's why I always advise people not to till.

Anyone have a Reynold's vacuum bag sealer? I posted this on another thread.

My friend has a Renyolds vacuume sealer. He said it uses too many batteries. He took an electrical adaptor and converted it. Now he plugs it in and uses it.

A little white electric adapter. Has no clue what it was to.
He said - 6 batteries (which it takes) will equal 9 volts.
Class 2 Power Supply
Imput 120 AC
Output DC 4.8 V
500 mA
2.4 VA
Model # AU35-045-050

Cut the plug end off and peel the wires back 3-4 inches. Strip the ends about 1 inch. Twirl them and get them tight. Keep the wires separate! Take off the cap to the vacuume and stick the wires in. He has not soldered the wires on yet. I know it works as I saw it.

He tried higher volt ones but they did not work. He has no clue why it works.

This one is filthy I stole it out of DH garage.

Robindog and Victor, I still have a sinus infection, too. Darn doctor said I just had a cold when I went in to see here at the beginning of December. Still coughing up mucus. Yuck! Feel like I may be getting bronchitis, too. It's been a month now since symptoms started, but it's like low grade, just enough to make me feel not well, but not enough to make me feel really sick.

Love all the stories of the dog theivery. We can't leave anything near the edge of our counters. My Patches will get it when everyone is out of the house. She will get into the trash bags out on the porch, too, if I don't put them up where she can't reach them. She's very naughty. Nowhere near as bad as many of the dogs I've seen on that Animal Planet show called "It's Me Or The Dog". Great show! Those are some very bad dogs! It's amazing how easy Victoria Stillwell makes it looks to correct all the naughty behaviors, though I know if they whole family is not consistent then it doesn't work. My family here will not be consistent on anything where training is concerned. For them most part I don't have trouble with Patches, just now and then, so it's not too big of a deal.

I had a dog once that ate all the filling out of a pumpkin pie I had on the counter to cool, and another time she ate a whole big plate of cookies. Boy was I mad! She just gave me her guilty look while I ranted and raved and she would grin at me (if anyone here has not seen a dog grin, it's when they pull back their lips and show their teeth, they are trying to imitate a human grin, as people always show their teeth when they smile, and very few dogs will do this).

I will have to read up on that Fukuoka Farming method later. I bookmarked it. I don't want to use human waste, though, unless it's milorganite. Did you all know that is processed sewage sludge? Not recommended for use on veggies, I think. I hear deer will stay away from the gardens if you use it. Will have to try it. It's supposed to be great fertilizer, and I've read a lot of daylily growers use it with great success.

Good morning.

My dog does not even have the grace to look guilty when he does some thing bad he just smiles at me. He thinks live is a joke. The pine trees down here in "northeastern" Florida are shedding pollen. Another sign of the coming spring. Next are the willows and the Carolina Jasmine. Our winters down here might be mild compared to y'all but I like to see them gone. LOL

Here is the brat smiling.

Whenever we would come home and our lab slinked into the coat closet we knew to start looking around for what he had gotten into. Usually it was the trash and we would find little pieces of paper that had some kind of food residue strewn aropund. Mostly he ate them, then would want to go out at awful hours. He was the best comapnion though. We miss him dearly still and it has been about 3 years.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

And what a smile he has!!!

First major snow storm in North Central Pennsylvania.....Baa Humbug! The first half inch was pretty.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Well I have a little note that spring is going to come. The robins are here, they are forming flocks and filling up before heading north. This is one of my signs that the seasons are changing as we never see them in the fall or early winter.

Also the camellias are blooming. Spring is coming just hang in there

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, Wren--love to see the birds flocking---we had a feeder in the Villages--the chipping sparrows would be there in huge numbers---one day--they were gone---I like to think the ones who nest in my yard in CT every summer were from my yard in FL.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

My robins don't migrate - they hang out in the woods/swampy area near us. They'll come a dozen or so at a time to feast on my crabapple during the winter.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I saw a small flock of robins in the woods on New Years Day.

In the bird's eye opinion.....I live in the woods. The robins are here or near by all winter. They are seen everyday downtown where the thermal mass is a couple degree warmer factor.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, everyone, I just saw the best movie ever! It's called Slumdog Millionaire, and was filmed and takes place in India. Wonderful storytelling and beautifully filmed. Very sad and also funny, even when it shouldn't be. Plenty of action and romance. Never a dull moment. Everyone loves to see the underdog win, especially if that underdog is honest and good.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

send me my robins oh thats right they will freeze their butts off since spring my way only
shows up in may should start seeing those robins at the end of april lol

two feet of snow and it has not been pretty in a long time like since november

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Ok I will keep your robins safe until the snow melts.

I haven't seen the cedar waxwings yet so that's a good sign that the winter has no getting to bad yet, they only come down here when the weather gets to impossible up there. LOL

1 CUP PEANUT BUTTER chunky or plain
1 LB SUET
MELT THEM TOGATHER LOW HEAT THEN ADD THE REST

2 CUPS OATS
2 CUPS CORNMEAL
1 CUP FLOWER wheat or white
1/3 CUP SUGAR
Lined the bottom of the dish with non salted walnuts.

I have 1/2 lb of suet left. I am going to put that in a mesh onion bag with a chunk of this. Lets see what goes first... ‹(•¿•)›

Mmmm---birds will love it! We see robins once in awhile---they are near our son's house, & that town is much colder than ours.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That does look yummy!

Just finished boxing up the decorations. Started last Thursday but a major poke in the eye put an end to it!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Some very happy birds at your house I bet. I think some robins stay around all winter and come out of the woods when there is a bit of a thaw. Usually see them in large groups then. I had six deer at the feeder last night, they would make short work of your peanut butter bird desert, not to mention the psycho squirrels.

This will REALLY make you think
This is enlightening!!!!
This is probably what it does to our brain power - like putting your head in a microwave.
