Great idea, thanks Dave!
I love the new Today in History feature
It was Terry's idea. :) She and Melody have been working on putting it together since late September! It was a heroic effort for them to put together a list of over 1,000 historical entries for this new feature.
Ahhhh, Mel and Terry will have to be on my list of heroes, then.
Thanks, ladies. A worthwhile effort.
Awww, shucks. It was fun, in a geeky sort of way. (Speaking only for myself--Mel is way cooler than me ;o)
Not going there....I've known Mel wayyy too long, and she lives wayyyyy too close!
Cool geeky feature, though, so again, thanks.
What a great new addition to my home page! Thanks a bunch, Terry and Melody (and Dave, of course)!!
Barb
What a great idea! I really love this new feature.
It was really fun putting it together, and there were some dates that we had to really hunt for something that would relate to DG. We have some silly things thrown in, as well as some very important garden related dates. Something for everyone, regardless of your favorite plant or activity.
Cool feature. Thanks. Today was important in American history too - the Boston tea party!
Was getting ready to say that Victor, and you beat me to it. Tea was gone and Chicory became the new favorite!
The switch was to chicory at the dock...
I thought it was hickory dickory dock....
That was my set-up!
LOL!
Sorry--it *was* too easy. Guess I should have seen the setup coming!
Y'all are such a mess.
I love love love the new history feature dates! This just makes my day a bit brighter.
I agree... Thanks for the History.
Dave, maybe if you know a day or two in advance, that you're lacking ideas for a particular date you could ask your worshipers/members to submit ideas. But, then again that might take too much of your much needed time to sort through them.
Every date has at least one historical fact or event. That is what took us so long.
If you see that we have omitted an event that would be of interest to DG members, we'd love to hear about it though. This is a 'living list' and we can add to it as more dates are 'unearthed'
It should be fun.
Definitely would like to see more garden/hort/botany items like today's one about Wilder.
Lots of those Victor...lots
Like in 1876, when some poor soul in America said, 'Sure I'll try planting it. What is it called?'
'Kudzu.'
Best I can recall, there was a kudzu related date or two included.
It will grow over every other date and event.
Nope, none in the queue yet.
Terry is going to be making a forum for the discussion of this feature, and we're going to open it up so other people can submit new events directly into the system (new entries will be approved by an admin first).
Terry is going to be making a forum for the discussion of this feature,
Done: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/trivia/all/
Dave will have to work his programming magic to allow new submissions to "feed" into the queue.
so when we submit new stuff, like "when kudzu took over the world," do you want any links to info or pictures? Or just a summary?
What we would need is the exact date and any details you can provide; if you have hyperlinks to where you got your information, all the better.
We aren't set up to accept photos to accompany the events.
Dmail that info to you?
For now you can post it in the new forum. Dave has mentioned he will set up a means for everyone to submit dates and details into a form with the proper formatting, and then we can approve or decline (duplicates, inappropriate submissions, etc.).
How far in advance do you need it?
If it's for tomorrow, I'd need it like...right now ;o) Otherwise, anytime is fine.
What fun--I love it, thanks!!!
Will there be a way to know what's already in there for each date so we aren't submitting something that's already there?
So I have time for Feb 29th??
Victor, not all of us are horticulturalist .........I would enjoy something I am unfamiliar with but half the fun is that we do recognize these events. We might not remember the exact date but have some familiarity with the subject matter.
Love the new feature!! Thanks Terry and Melody!
What happened on Feb. 29th Victor?
Where do I find the Today in History feature? Lee
