I see now...I think if you remove the blooms and those older leaves that got bit, it will recover nicely in no time. ^_^

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I think you're right. There are two others that are similar . . . I'll probably take a leaf or two from each to stick, just in case, then let the repotting begin!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Have fun, Syrumani! I am watching basketball and repotting streps.

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

Dittos to what Gail said with the exception I am watching or actually halfheartedly listening to C-Span Book TV while repotting streps.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Well I just got back from a visit to Dave's Violets in Springfield Mo. I definately got my plant fix ^_^. I asked about the secret Strep room Jim-- and guess what-- He showed it to me;) I came home with 1 ginormis strep, 4 sinningias(2 micro mini) 2 episcia plants, and 3 stolons & an African violet-- I will get some pics as soon as the fire starts warming the house back up after my daylong journey!! Oh yeah-- all this for $40.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

No wonder you know exactly what is going on in the world, Goldleaf, all the time! While you are educating yourself, I am learning more about football and basketball (LOL).......

I got all nostalgic thinking about Mother today. So, I dug out all her collection of wooden ornaments and decorated a tree for the grandchildren. I even found a nativity scene one of my daughters gave me 10 years ago.

Beautiful nativity and special from your daughter. I'll have to get my set out. Plus, I must have a least a dozen lighted Christmas houses with accessories I collected that I should set up but it's a lot of work and I've been lazy I guess. Haven't set them up in a couple of years.

LOL on what you said,Gail. That's me, a real square peg in a round world.

You sure were the lucky one today, HGran.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I even got so moved by Mom's ornaments I ran to get a 'not real' tree because the 3 older grandchildren got their dad's allergies to live pine.

Someday, I will go somewhere to buy plants in person . . . aside from Steven and Ken . . .I have been lazy putting out my village too, but I figure I can't put out the village until I find a replacement Santa - may have to go to Michaels tomorrow . . . Nothing wrong with "not real" trees!!!

This is one of those 1/2 trees that you hang on the wall. Kevins Dad worked at a high school that they rebuillt, and this tree came out of the old one. Who knows how old it is, but I love it!! By the way, its Kevin who is Mr Christmas

Hi Turtle and Kivit

Nice to get greetings from fellow Virginian gardeners. Hope you have a wonderful holiday. I am waiting for my Irish Flirt violet to bloom for the first time.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Luv,
I posted in another forum about getting together in the beginning of Feb as Kim(Dimmer) is coming for the superbowl with my hubby here and there is a lady in South Boston I think would come and you if you like and Av_cd girl lives about two hours away so thought we all could do lunch or something??? I was thinking of meeting in Greensboro? Just a thought... Kivit I don't know how far you are from us but let us know...
Hugs,
Susan

I have a lot of strep leaves down with the mid vein out using a light mix.......but here are my 'mishaps' I decided to try in just perlite and vermiculite. The ones in the mix look great but no babies yet the most neglected ones are starting to make babies.......Cape Essence...

Hey luv!
I dont have many AV's-only the few that were included with streps as 'extras", but i believe Irish Flirt is one of the leaves I stuck. post a picture when it does!
enjoy the holidays!

actually...
MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone
because I am leaving tomorrow!
What will I do without DG?

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

It is a shame that we cannot post links for our favorite vendors. It is good information to share with folks who do not know where to go for quality products. I do understand the reasoning, though. I am sure that I would hate coming to DG if I was inundated by posts that amounted to nothing more than ads for plants for sale.

Hey Gail, heres some I got going in spagnum moss

I didn't realize we weren't supposed to post links to vendors that we've used and like. I know it's against the acceptable use policy for self promotion of ourselves or our businesses but I thought it was okay to post a link to a vendor we've used. I know I have posted links to a couple of places in the past.

I just went and read the AUP section: http://davesgarden.com/aboutus/tos/ again and maybe I'm not seeing it, or not comprehending what I'm reading, but I don't see anywhere where it says we can't post links to vendors. It would be wrong to self promote by posting a link to ourselves, or our own website if we are a vendor but other than that, I would think we could talk about places we've done business with, and post a link to that business. I know I've posted links to a couple of places in the past, sure hope I wasn't in the wrong doing it.

Williston, ND

do you have a business plantlady?
if so can you email me the name in a private dmail
thanks

JIM

(Zone 1)

Jim, Nope, I don't have a business, LOL. I can't even manage the house and the plants I have much less trying to run a business! When I was young(er) I thought I would like to work in a botanical garden or plant nursery but if I did, I would not enjoy coming home and taking care of my own plants. You know the old saying about bringing your work home with you? I was just commenting with a reply to where kathy65468 said it's a shame we can't post links to our favorite vendors. I think I will contact Admin. and ask about that. If it is against policy it sure would be a shame. We all like to hear where everybody else gets good plants!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

It really does not matter because I googled every name mentioned and got to the websites without anyone having to actually post a hyperlink. It works well and now I am drooling over many beautiful flowers. I will be glad to get back to work. I am on winter hiatus right now but start back in 2 weeks and I have my wish lists all made out for spending the first 53 paychecks next year. Hmm I do not think my math is going to work. I must get back to my lists and whittle them down.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

If it IS against the rules-(I don't think so but...been wrong before) - I think it is only against policy to self promote. We can always post the name and a link to the garden watchdog entry where there IS a link to the vendor site;)

(Zone 1)

Kathy, what do you do for a living that you are off for winter hiatus? LOL, I like that idea of having a wish list for the entire year! I have a wish list a mile long and it's really hard to visit so many great websites and NOT make purchases! Good thing some places don't ship in winter!

I sent an e-mail to Admin. asking about posting links. I have posted links (many times) to nurseries I've purchased from and sure hope I wasn't breaking any rules. I will post back here when I get a reply. I'm thinking it is just not allowed to post links to your own website if you are a vendor (self promoting), but I'm hoping it's okay for us to share links to businesses we love to purchase from!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I answered plantladylin, but I'll post a recap here.

It is against the Acceptable Use Policy rules to use our forums or dmail to promote your own website or business. (It would be like walking into a busy diner and handing out menus and flyers for your new diner down the road. Not fair, and not nice ;o)

However, it is not against the rules to mention a business, as long as the vendor didn't ask you to "plug" for them, and you're not related to them.

As far as finding good AV vendors, or sharing your $0.02 worth, we've had an AV category in the Garden Watchdog for years: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/advanced.php?category=71&submit=Go - this is alphabetically. There are a few on there that are not dedicated exclusively to AVs, but they do sell AVs or other gesneriads.

This version is ranked according to their customer ratings: http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/advanced.php?state=xx&country=XX&category=71&search_text=&sorter=rating&submit=Search

If we missed any, you can add them, or let us know and we will. If you haven't shared your experiences, we really encourage you to do so. What you know will help others!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

Actually, the company that I work for has job openings all over the country. It is weekends only. It pays $12 an hour for guaranteed 11 hours a week. They have cut the hours this year. Last year it was 16 hours a week. I am looking at another company to help fill in the lost hours. It was great having so much free time to work in the yard last year even though I was working a job. It is truly the best of both worlds. I have lots of time at home yet still go off to work just part time.

(Zone 1)

Terry, Thanks so much for your quick response to my d-mail ... and also for posting here. You explain things so much better than I could. I really appreciate all the good work you do for us all to have this great site! Thanks for the link to GW too ... I'm going to check out some of the vendors right now!

Kathy: Sounds like you do have the best of both worlds! A paying part time job and time to "Play in the Dirt!" Of course we all know when you have the love of gardening/plants, the $$$ disappears quickly!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

Yes they do but with trading the plants do not eat so much dollars. Gotta love the barter system!

(Zone 1)

Oh yeah! I had never bought plants on line or traded plants through the mail until I found DG! I've still only purchased plants a couple of times ... much rather trade and join in on Co-Ops, which I've done three times now too! Great fun!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jim, I started strep leaves in SMoss but the problem was that you can never take them out again. The roots of the streps get so tangled in the moss that you have to continue growing them in s moss and I didn't like it. Stay in touch with us and let's see what happens to yours.

I didn't think there has ever been a problem with vendors as long as we aren't promoting ourselves.

Wytheville, VA

hey lin, what are Co-ops???

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Kivit, go to communities at the top and look for the forum Co-ops..........a lot of people go into together to order something. (Dave is not responsible in any way for co-ops is my understanding)

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

did'ent find co op anywhere.

bonnie

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

LOL You are not looking hard enough.

(Zone 1)

Here ya go Bonnie: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/groupbuy/all/

This time of year there aren't any going on, I don't think. Most have finished out by now because of cold weather. I joined in on a fabulous Caladium Co-Op last year and they are doing another one in a couple of months.

Watch for the listings with headings saying: Any Interest in .... and it will tell what co-op someone is contemplating! I ordered Caladium Bulbs, Amaryllis Bulbs and Hanging baskets and pots in a couple of co-ops this year. Love them!

Eunice, MO(Zone 5b)

there are a couple going on right now. There is one for seedling heat mats, a canna one, and another.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

I agree-- co-ops are the best-- This is my Amaryllis "nymph" that I bought in the last one I joined-- the bloom is over 8" across!

Wow! That is a Beauty! I have gave a few for Christmas gifts and have a few sprouting now, can't wait for the blooms! I'm fortunate because these gorgeous plants can be grown in the ground down here ... popular landscape plants for lots of folks. I will probably plant mine in the garden in another month or so. I had a bunch in some beds in the backyard and dug them all out because the bed was full of weeds. I gave some to neighbors and potted a few up. I weeded the bed but you should see it ... full of weeds again! That's one thing that isn't so great about gardening in Florida ... sometimes you just can't keep up with the weeds! And, I always have a few inches of mulch in my beds too. Living in a tropical like climate we get stuff that grows like gangbusters and weeds are included.

Wytheville, VA

Oh1 I LOVE nymph! Think I have one somewhere, but they are dormant for the winter.
i got some ordinary ones todat for $4.50 at Lowes: Red Lion, Minerva, Appleblossom & hEY! Nymph!
how about that!
