Wow, that's interesting. Wish him good luck for me!
Some blooms from my Fla. gardens.......
Since 9/11??? It's not like they threw javelins at the towers. sheesh
I know, Jen, but Homeland Security has tightened up a lot of things with anything that could be used as a weapon. Before 9/11 we carried a golf club onto the plane with us when we flew down to Fla. (it was a Christmas present to Hank and he wanted to put it in his set of clubs he kept down here). That is strictly prohibited now. I try to consider that they are just trying their best to protect us all, and whoever thought that a plane would be a weapon! I guess you have to just scratch your head at some of the things people think of!
Man, I just went outside to check on my seedling babies in this heat, and things were terribly wilted out there. My tomatoes are in pots and they are needing to be watered every day now. Hank just went out to gather some tangelos to squeeze us some juice for breakfast. I love not having to buy any juice and knowing ours is chemical-free.
There is a new stray cat on the scene. He has very long legs and his dark striping is very prominent. He also has black rings around his tail. He has been hanging around my patio a lot and lying in wait for the birds that come to our feeders and bird baths. I think he is living under our shed now. He is thin and I feel sorry for him, but I won't dare put any food out for him because it wouldn't be fair to him for us to leave and abandon him in 6 months. Does anyone know what kind of cat looks like that? Yesterday I was sitting on our sun porch talking on the phone when he came up to the door and looked in at me. Heart tugs!
A skinny raccoon?
Funny you say that, Jen.....I was wondering if he might be a Maine Coon cat because his tail at least resembles a raccoon. His face is definitely cat, but his markings are very different. I know so little about cats, but we have our regulars that stop by and partake of my low bird baths and I really like them. In the night about a week ago, I heard a serious cat fight and then I saw this guy run like heck from "Frosty's" turf a couple of days ago. Frosty and Butter are our regular visitors that live in different houses behind us. Yesterday I saw a dove take off in a flurry from my low bird bath, so I got up and looked out and there was Coonie hiding nearby in one of the bushes. Tsk Tsk. I had to tell him the rules around here. He didn't like my rules, so he walked away into our citrus grove.
Maine Coon Cats have long hairy tails, & tufts in their ears---their faces look like lynxes, & they're very talkative---expensive, too. I hate to see any animal abandoned, but a Coon Cat would somehow be worse. My stepson usually has a few Coon Cats, & he gave us one that was a mix---he had a short tail, but his personality was pure Coon. Loved the story of Hank & the javelin---but do not like the gators--they really creep me out!
A meercat.
I just knew that program would start the cat fanciers having to have them as pets.
Now the owners cant live with and release them into the wild,
lol
DonnieBrook, Love the idea of Hank out heaving his Javelin. Hope he finds a better spot soon. Poor kitty and birds, he needs a bell, but then you would have to catch him, which would mean you would start to pet him, then feed him and then what to do when you head north. Big conundrum. I would love to see a picture of "Coonie" Patti
Oh, Louise! I was sort of subliminally (wrong word ...) avoiding this thread, but now I'm hooked! Fresh tangelos and lemons? Dahlias from seed? Oh my goodness! And I think I've read about that Tibouchina but never seen a picture - stunning! Oh, I'm jealous, for sure. Just learned we need a new roof!
JoAnn - what's a "meercat"?? And what program?
Patti - I'll try to get a photo of him for a better basis for an ID. No javelin practice today......it's pouring finally. I saved a bit on our water bill this morning, as it is our assigned watering day, and things really needed it, but we gambled and won on this one. This is the first day of rain since we've been here. Things really need it.
Marilyn - thanks for the description of the Maine Coon Cat. That is definitely NOT what this guy is. I'm trying my best not to get attached.....that's such a problem with me, and I do not want to set him up for abandonment in May.
Carrie - sorry to hear about your roof. Yikes! And yes, the Tibouchina is pretty unusual. I think it's from Hawaii. My dahlia babies have gotten their second set of leaves....proud Mom here! LOL
Louise I believe Jo Ann meant the show 'Meercat Manor' on the Animal Planet Channel.

It's cute as heck!
Oh, thanks, Celeste! I've never seen that....very cute! Coonie is not a meercat. I've got my camera ready to snap him if he gazes into the sunroom again. He's probably reclining under the shed at the moment.....good day for a snooze with the rain.
It never ceases to amaze me how some of us seem to have the entire www at our fingertips! Amazing, Celeste!
It was nothing, i've seen the show before as my brother is a huge fan!
Your right.
It was an Animal Planet series that went for two seasons, maybe three.
"It was nothing" she said modestly.
You're lucky you don't have any fisher cats down there, Louise!
That's for sure, Sue! We have them in NH and they are bad news for domestic animals that get out!!
I saw one on Beaver Island in Northern Michigan.
I only saw it once, it was huntinh along the sand dunes out side the camp we were staying in.
Cousin in Rockland has seen them near Torsey Pond in Maine.
I usually don't see them but rather hear them and I perfer it that way! lol They are nasty little devils!
All weasels are, fisher just the largest N.A. one.
Pixi what kind of noise do they make?
I have never seen a live one for sure, but think we caught a glimpse of one in Vt last year. We saw something briefly that neither of us knew very early one morning. Kind of strange that they are so hated, but so little known. I have seen pelts of them. People do say they make a terrible noise. Patti
I wonder if its the same noise as a Wolverine?
Weasels sound like this, 'My dear constituents...'
LOL I can always count on you Victor
HA HA!!
FOTFL----how true, Victor! I've seen 3 fishers---the best place is our brush dump in town which is by a river---they're very wary---I'm glad---would not want to tangle with one!
For those that don't know, a "fisher cat" or "fisher" is a North American Marten.
They weigh between 4 and 15 pounds, and are between 29 to 47 inches long. (The name may originate from the French word fichet, which referred to the pelt of a European polecat.)
Fishers are also known for one of their calls, which is often said to sound like a child screaming, and can be mistaken for someone in dire need of help.
Thanks Sue.WOW
So how many would I need for a coat? LOL, just kidding.
Carrie, we can always count on you for a chuckle!
As long as I get a chuckle and not a shoe thrown at me, I'm ok. :)
Fisher fur is beautiful, but knowing the animal, don't think I could wear it!

Wow - a triple play, Marilyn! LOL (How does that happen???)
When she REALLY does not want to wear it!
She doesn't like fisher fur!!
Fishers scream at night, it's ghastly sounding but it your close they will growl and hiss, even.
Funny, Victor!
Eek, Pixie - I wouldn't want to be close enough to hear the hiss!!
Ok....time for a few more pics.......I took several, but the morning sun had faded the blooms, so I'll wait and retake them in better light. Here's one of my patio veggies. You can see how the green beans and broccoli have grown.......
