Parte Cuatro: Breathe deep & tell us what smells wonderful..

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

ASTCgirl, you are so right. Syd and Regina are just the sweetest folks. Totally go above and beyond and everything is always so healthy.....healthier than I even keep up with (confession time.) They found these plants in the dark for me to bring along the next day, and apologized about it. Yes, I MUST have a list ready to go for them in advance next show. I also got a Calliandra from them - not fragrant, but very cool.

Chantell, I think that should be Orchids by Delray. I may have heard of them. Some folks down here are exclusive and some are just downright weird. If they are who I think they are then you won't find much info. on them and some people who couldn't hack commercial are great collectors who still hang on to their nursery license. I'll bet they have some great stuff. I will also be going to a get together next weekend, all stars aligned and willing. There will be a person with great orchid info. there and I will pick her brain on "our" behalf.

Beautiful epi pic!

Thank you...I was pleased with the pics...course I took a million...was just so amazed with these huge blooms and what was a soft lilly-like fragrance to my nose. Yes feel free to pick her brain on "our" behalf...course if she has any vendor names she'd refer that would be an added bonus. Here's the feedback over on the orchid forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/944450/
Samantha - came home with a "boat load" last year, if I remember correctly...LOL. I recall drooling on my keyboard when I heard about the mother load.

Gee, I'm pretty sure I visted Orchids by Delray when we were looking for an orchid for my Mom a few years back--it was wonderful! Finally decided on "Sharry Baby" one of the easiest to grow. Get this--she let it die because it was too big! Grr...Mom only gets roses now.

Regarding Moonflowers, I find that they really like it hot before coming up. I also believe what someone once told me: "They don't bloom until they've reached the top of their support" -- for that reason, I start mine on an old broken 4' wood ladder, this is one of my favorite pics.

Very nice! I can't wait until I get a multiple bloom pic.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Vi, I LOVE your picture! So pretty all those white blooms against the aged wood.
My moonflower has bloomed low on the vine actually...and it's in a pot! But...no blooms during winter like you Floridians (yes, yes, zone envy, lol!)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Was just thinking that!! What a great idea!! Have to peek at the yard sales come spring

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

This weekend I attended an Orchid Show, it was awesome! There was this intense fragrance in the air, and I had to ask where it was coming from! It was one of the Orchids, it smelled like those almond/coconut sun lotions, you know what I mean? Chantell...you would have been in HEAVEN!!!

I'll take a pic of the orchid I bought....(they didn't have the fragrant ones for sale though).

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhhh I'd be in utter heaven, I tell you!!! I picked up a Maxillaria Tenuifolia which I'm told smells like Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil when in bloom.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Yeah, THAT's what it smelled like!!!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

I used to rub that lotion on me just to smell it even in winter!! Oh to have that fragrance in the air!!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

I was just thinkin' maybe that's a cure for the winter blues...suntan oil.... ^_^

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

if you walk fast past them, nice enough fragrance. If you stick your nose close to flowers, "le parfum de pipi de chat"

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

lol Nery! I'd say the same about Datura leaves! pipi de chat or peanut butter!

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

LOL Nery...I hear ya on that one....no one shoot me but that's how I feel about the Tuberose scent...nice and wafting...but dang I don't want my nose right up in it...gag!
First year with the Sweet Olives and maybe "this" is the norm but the one I pictured above http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5965714 Is still covered in blooms!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C, I think your osmanthus should bloom from Jan-Mar. Here is a macro shot of mine. I don't know what var. it is. Looks like your flowers are more yellow and mine are more white?

Did I tell you about my score last fall? I went to a local nursery that has a 70% off sale every year. They had the rattiest, saddest sweet olives you have ever seen for $2.50. I bought them, then there was one that was beyond pathetic and the guy gave it to me, thinking I was crazy for wanting it. Well, that baby is full of green buds now. who's laughing now? ha ha ha ha ha

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahh Nery how SWEET (literally and figuratively) is that?!?!? I'm so glad I have these...I absolutely those these gals (sweet olives). The 2 that I have blooming seem to have more pastel yellow colored blooms. If they have those again for el cheapo prices let me know...be happy to trade or cover $ and s/h. These have really become one of my favorite plants...love coming downstairs in the morning greeted with that sweet scent!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I will make a note. they have them every year in late sep-oct.

You know what is odd about osmanthus? It is a slow grower, but I think it is easy to propagate. I'm going to experiment and see if I can root a cutting.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I think my pooch loves osmanthus. He walks by there every single day. He seems indifferent to all other plants. Here is Puddy w/ his favorite toy bunny.

If it is...let me know and we can do a swap-a-roo of sweet olives!!!
Ok...I'm going to throw out the pride and show everyone how utterly brainless I can be. I was in search of a plant - and now I can't remember it. The vendor had showed it as sold out but then I emailed them and they listed it in two sizes...any of this ring a bell - anyone? I swear if my head wasn't attached...there would be serious issues - bad enough that it is attached...ugh

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Dang Nery...who took THAT pic...it is incredible...cute pup as well

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

C, looking at your previous posts: orchids? epis?

Totally O/T: I had a fellow garden club member visit me today. I was showing her around and we stopped in front of my large Frosty Pink brug. As you can imagine, the leaves are hanging by a thread, all mushy and sad from the cold. She looks at it and earnestly comments: "Oh, that is gorgeous". I knew what she meant--she could picture it in full bloom in warmer days. Only a gardener can do/say that.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ahhh Amen to that...!!!! You KNOW...when you KNOW just what it will look/smell like...MmmmmMmmmm
Decided to quit searching the threads and searched my email...found it....Sweet Almond Verbena - ugh!!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

you could get the small, it is a fast grower

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

That's exactly what I was thinking. Unless it's a difficult plant I always get the smaller sizes...even when shopping at a local nursery/store I flip over the plants - getting the smallest available with the largest root ball...LOL Taught my young nephew how to help me out doing this...sad, I know. ^_^

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

one of my fave roses, blooming in mid-Jan. Deliciously frag, though I have a hard time describing scent. All I can say is that it is the kind of smell you'd want all over your house, but won't give you a headache.

Nery - you've only told me a zillion times but one more plez? What's that mini you like so much? Scent better or the same as the one you have pictured?

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/65055/

Frag. about the same. You don't have to stick your nose in flower, you can enjoy frag. as you walk by. I don't remember if I said I had it in a hanging basket and have since transplanted inground. I would take a pic of it but looks a little weather-ratty. I may later, just to give ya a general idea.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Puddy is gorgeous, how often do you melt with those eyes? Bet he's a bit spoiled, lol.

Hummmn, I like all the resistances "Chariot" shows:
Resistant to black spot
Resistant to mildew
Resistant to rust
Stems are moderately thorny

Perhaps I will try another if it can take your heat Nery. Do you grow it in shade?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

This is where I'll be headed soon, scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Daphnes and Osmanthus (7 month bloom!) for sale. (I better get that job soon) I fully stand by my words--Tea Olives smell like Apricots! Sweet Olive?

Nery - what would be your 2nd choice for scent that Nor'East carries? (yes, I'm feeling compelled to place an order...see what you've done?) LOL

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

Vi, $8 for a 2 gal is a very good price and they will be spring-fresh, not fall-ratty. What a score! Duh! I meant tea olive. Peaches, huh? I hadn't really associated its frag. with anything specific, just divine, that's all.

My sweet chariot did get a little bit of BS last year. Since it was in a pot and you know how one has to water potted plants more often than inground plants, I think I might have precipitated the BS w/ overwatering. An even though it is a mini, (1' x 1' at maturity), get the largest hanging basket you can as it will mature quickly and will beg you for water all the time.

Miss C, Noreast is the best place I can think of for minis. I would suggest you contact Kassia. Minis are her passion and she is quite generous w/ information. She may very well own every mini that Nor'east carries. Honestly, I'm not the best source of info re: minis. And you (read: everybody) can always come hang out in the rose forum, we will drag you down to our level of obsession in no time at all! And if Kassia is n/a, those girls at noreast are so helpful, they will make suggestions specific for your area. Customer service is a BIG deal with them. A couple of local nurseries in my area are getting their minis inventory from them. They're good!

Puddy is my baby, but don't let the big dog, big cat or big bunny hear that....shhhhhh

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

No, APRICOTS!

LOL

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Vi - as for your question about "sweet olive?" LOL I too have called them both Tea Olive AND Sweet Olive apparently they go by both http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1450/ -- was wondering why I used both terms...LOL

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Vi, sending that link was just MEAN! lol!

Nery...I had already hear about this roses's reputation. Now that you've confirmed it...it's on my wish list!

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Sorry sweetie, I will remember you when I visit. We're hoping to go on 2/7.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Hey guys....look at what will bloom soon for me! I can't wait!

Even the pizza delivery man once told me..."I love delivering to your house so that I can smell those on your front porch!" lol!

doesn't that just make your day???

what is the plant, I don't recognize

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok Roberta....those leaves look like a teeny vine I have in my living room...that RJ was kind enough to send me...but I'd have to dig out one of our long dmails...what cha got there?
Ahhh I was a good girl and put it into my journal - the one I have is called a Solanum seaforthianum...the leaves just look the same.
