A successful Wild Goose Chase from a couple of days ago . . . Snow Goose is a rarity over here, so it was nice to go and see one that turned up not too far from home, hanging out with the local Greylag Geese

Not a lot of birds around today, I think this was one of the reasons.

This morning, when i looked out the back door... i noticed this quite large bird [of prey] on the "bunny bush" [this mound of twisted brush where the bunnies like to hide] and he/she was just sitting there. When i let the dog out, my yard is fenced, it didnt phase it a bit. THe bush where it was sitting is probably 60-80 feet behind my fenced yard.

After i flew away, i went out side to take a few images.... plus to see if it were sitting having breakfast, but i could find no evidence of that. But, later it flew over head... so i came in to try and figure out what it was.

i've come to the conclusion it was a female Northern Harrier .. at least i think so. I could not get a photo, as it was too far away. She was a very beautiful bird though.

BUT - i did see a green parakeet ... which i have no idea if it will survive our winters. It was 10° when i woke up this morning. I know i saw the lil bird on Thanksgiving day... so i know it's been out there over a week now. It's been hanging out with the house Sparrows and Cardinals.

Any comments on parakeets living outside in the dead of winter [cold winters] ?

Here is the Cardinal... i couldnt get close enough to get a good shot... as i got closer, it flew back into the other trees.

I wouldn't think the parakeet could survive for long once winter really settles in.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I used to raise parakeets. They can stand pretty cold or pretty hot temps as long as it is not a sudden drop or a sudden rise but I wouldn't think he will survive very long with our winters. BEV

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

hopefully the lil guy can find a sheltered area so he/she doesnt freeze to death.

PERTH, Australia

tcs, any chance of enticing the parakeet down into a cage (hunger is a powerful master). I'm sure if you could capture it, someone would be more than happy to keep it as a pet. Any native by-catch could be released if they end up in the cage as well. Considering they are native to the hot, dry deserts of Australia, I can't imagine this poor little one surviving for long.

Nice shots, everyone. GP, I still haven't received the package with the Painted Buntings. C'mon, what's the delay?

Melbourne, FL

Can't catch those little buggers........actually all I have so far are one adult colorful male with what may well be his charges, several immature male Buntings. I think I will be seeing more as the winter progresses.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Margaret -- the lil parakeet is hanging out at the bird feeder with the other birds. I was going to contact the police dept to see if anyone lost one.... DH is assuming someone just let it go. I'll see what i can do... put i've never seen it low enough to 'entice' it down.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

If you could find a bird cage out there with some food maybe he would get in it. BEV

Nothing really special from yesterday...I saw two beautiful Red-shouldered Hawks on our forst walk yesterday morning. But it was so cold that I hadn't taken the camera with me.

So how about a Downy Woodpecker & a Tufted Titmouse...
