What weird weather we're having #5

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Mine is gone just with the injections. No problem now. Too much nose picking from the dirt in our nostrils. LOL

Eugene, OR

Ewwwww!

I thought nutria look like huge rats with beaver teeth. Course when I'm running them off with a broom, all I can see is their back side. They have got to be the stupidest animal I've ever seen. They do eat them in the south, I forget the name of that guy on the Travel Channel that eats anything, but he had some in one of the southern states. They said it's a staple in their area. Yuk! Course if you're hungry........

My mantra for fall.....I LOVE MY TREES, SO I RAKE MY LEAVES. I have to say it a lot!

Cold here too, not as bad as you rc, but we're getting there. It's 33 on my deck right now.
Love those pics.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thats gross Steve LOL
Thanks for the info on flat iron steaks, I am real picky when it comes to beef, and I love beef when I get a chance to have it which is not very often.
Love the pics.
I can't remember where I went to get my Google bar back when I lost it, I think it was in tools, will look.

rc I still think I have never heard of trigger finger. After working many years at a big university medical center I left nursing an 1982 to follow my dream to be an architect. I still have a California RN license - how scary is that! I kept the license because it allowed me as an architect to get into procedure and operating rooms to document workflow and to determine space needs for equipment, etc. I probably slept through the trigger finger class.
Check out Song Dog Kennels.
I was not fond of white wine until I started drinking riesling. I have to say I love both those wines. It just depends on what you are after- a white or a red.
I know you all are night owls but I'm going to sleep!

Eugene, OR

I think I'm going to have a glass of wine^_^

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Portland, For what I know about Indian breeds, is like Steve said most are inter bred, and mostly with a husky background. But the best dogs I ever had are Samys but a lot of care in brushing, and they don't have fleas nor the dandruff that most dogs have. I have had 7 over the years. I love them to death, but after losing my last one to old age. I could not bear to have another one. She was 14.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Trigger fingers are a flexor tendonitis that locks the finger in a flexed painful position that has to be physically un-latched with the other hand. Two methods of repair, steroids in the tendon sheath and surgery to remove the physical barrier much like carpal tunnel.
Tills you must like the collection of mass amounts of hair that you get with your Sammys. I had one that lived next to a house of mine and all along the garage wall (cedar sided) was the hair scraped off in the passing and rubbing of the Samoyed on that wall. It looked like a Sasquatch live nearby.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

The worms in the compost piles enjoy the hair I provide them: it makes nice little warmies...

I am so grateful for this December weather. I might actually finish the necessary chores before January, which would be a first! I just came in a bit ago from walking the property & was amazed at the multitude of plants that are still flowering and growing. Some things look a bit confused, as they are attempting to flower much earlier than would be considered "normal". I wouldn't mind dry weekends all the way into Spring, but I suppose the weeds would exploit the opportunity to stretch their roots.

Holy crap, when I left my house, headed for work a little over an hour away in Eugene, I threw in long johns, extra gloves, two sweatshirts, coat and raingear because is was still only 31 deg. at my place. An hour later here in Eugene, it's 61 deg. I couldn't believe it when I stepped out of my car because Eugene is usually only about 5-8 deg warmer. Wow, it's an absolutely beautiful day here and I don't think that my place is going to unthaw. I was actually a couple hours late to work because there were tow trucks pulling cars out of the ditch on both sides of my driveway.

I'll take the warm.....can do without the tow trucks....been there done that!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yep, I agree.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

It was 32 deg here this morning and very frosty. 54 and sunny now and just beautiful outside. I gave the Chi's a much needed bath a while ago and they could lay in the sun to warm up. (Indoors)

Here is my frosty frog this AM. Frosty warts and all!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Currently 32 and lightly dusting snow. AACCKKK!!! For south jersey, this extended cold is way too soon.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Now the Frosty Frog would be a good one for the photo contest!!!! I love him......of course I love almost any frog.....!!!!!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Reflecting..I think he might be a toad and not a frog. Toads have the warts.. either way he sure is cute!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Love the blue frosty frog.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Will ask my 7 year old granddaughter.....she informed me that I have Frogs.....Grandma Jackie has Toads....and She (my granddaughter) likes TOADS.....she was 4 at the time and had not quite accepted our family yet.....she is Laura's step-daughter. She is a sweet heart and one of my best friends now!!

Eugene, OR

Great picture Beahive. It was crunchy here this morning too. Like rc I was amazed at how fast it warmed up. I finished putting up my lights with just an extra long sleeved shirt, had to abandon the fleece jacket. Not so cool tonight. Could use a few more days like this.

I'm hosting the traveling gnome from the Aroid forum this week. He got to go ice skating on the bird bath this morning. LOL

Beahive, I love that frog or toad, whatever it is!

Jan, sorry that you're getting too cold to soon! that' no fun. However, I really hope that it stays there!

For as much as I don't like to work in it, we are really beginning to need for it to rain, hopefully without the freezing. The river behind my place has gone to almost summer levels again. Just need to convince nature to give us the rain, but not all at once.

Tricia, your grandaughter sounds as if she's a lot of fun. And very bright! Glad that she finally accepted you as family.

Sally, that gnome is awesome! what a great adventure for you to allow him to go skating in your bird bath! lol Did you get as warm as we at work did? Probably, guessing from your work party pictures it looks as though you are in front of the southwest side of Pisgah and not behind it. Definitely the better place to be in the winter.

(Judi)Portland, OR

The frosty frog and the ice-skating gnome are very cute. Also so cute that your granddaughter told you about frogs & toads! Kids know the most amazing things. A few days ago I was walking past the environmental school on my way to the coffee shop and a bunch of little kids, maybe first grade, were putting mulch around some plants. I asked what kind of plants they were and they looked at me like I was deranged. Didn't I know that those are potato plants? Geeezzzz. Duuuuhhhh.
A little rainy here today but still no snow for Mt Hood. Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous!

Eugene, OR

I'll have to show you later where else we took him, DH is such a trooper! I haven't posted the pics on the other forum yet, so I don't want to spoil the surprise. Hosting the gnome has been a fun thing to do.

Yes, I got warm yesterday, putting up the lights, hope it clears up again today, still have mom's to do. It's drizzling right now. Southwest side of Pisgah sounds right, I haven't actually seen it on a map and my sense of direction is terribly lacking. I know we're somewhat protected, some systems just go right over us. It's fun watching Pisgah in the winter, it appears and disappears several times a day. Still foggy now, so I can only see half of it.

Tricia...your granddaughter reminds me of a friend of mine. She babysits her 7 yr old GD, she always says she's 7 going on 30. LOL

(Judi)Portland, OR

What is the hosting the gnome thing? Did I miss something during one of my "foggy" days?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

It is fun to go over and read the travels of the gnome on his forum. I went through the whole thing to catch-up.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Where is the gnome forum? I am so intrigued!

Eugene, OR

I don't even know how I got started, think I was intrigued by a new thread, checked it out and it sounded like fun. You host the gnome (Lingernot by name) for a week, take pictures around your garden (have to get creative now it's winter) and whatever else you want. Then you contact the next person dmail, get the address and send it on to them. It's been fun, still a few people to go before he gets sent back to his 'mommie'. People have gone all out and there's some neat souvenirs in the box with him. I still haven't learned how to do the link thing yet, but he's on the Aroid forum and this is the thread "۞ Lingernot/Staynot Gladomeer ۞ #8"

Eugene, OR

Hope this works http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/924221/

Thanks - I will check it out!
A gloomy day here but I am enjoying it. A good day to drink tea and read by the fire. I am watching the birds come after the little yellow fruit on the crabapple trees in my front yard. A few of the berries have turned reddish so the birds are picking those and leaving the yellows.
I have learned so much about plants by just walking around my neighborhood. For instance, I never knew that some plants have buds now that remain buds through the winter. While I was working 60 hours a week I never had the energy to think about all these things so now I feel so much more connected to the seasons. Ever raking the leaves has changed my perception of the earth.

Eugene, OR

I've been looking closer at my own garden this week, looking for interesting places to take pictures with the gnome. Found a few things I really hadn't noticed before. I always watch the rhody buds swell, the bigger they are the closer we are to spring!

rc taking pictures of frosted leaves got me out to look for some before the sun melted the frost off. Since I don't work anymore (at a job anyway Hahaha) I don't always go out that early. I do marvel at the spider webs on our newspaper box when I go to take the paper to mom in the morning. Todays was so big I almost couldn't get it out the box LOL.

Maybe rc is getting her rain, it's still drizzling here, probably won't do mom's lights today.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I'm at work now, so not much time to post. But, no rain yet. When I left my place it was sunny and then about 5 mi. later I got into the drizzel. I wouldn't say that it's my rain though:-p I think that most of the area is quite a bit under normal now. I thought that I read or saw somewhere that Eugene was about 17" normal for the year.

Eugene, OR

Can't really count this as anybody's rain, just a drizzle, was hoping there was more toward you. I agree we need it all around, I almost feel guilty for enjoying these dry warm days we've had.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

me too. I love this weather that we've been having. But, at some point reality must set :-s

(Judi)Portland, OR

Sally - tell me about the place where you live. I think at one time you said it was a retirement community?
By the way - I checked out the gnome thread and I think you all are in serious need of counseling (heehee). I sure hope there is not a psychiatrist following that thread! I can't believe you all have husbands and boyfriends playing along! My husband would have just scowled, but we have been divorced for 15 years. Maybe that should be a test for the next man - will you take a gnome to work?

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I so have a perfect place to take his picture in my garden. Maybe I will do it with the fairies I just purchased.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Rain, cold , sun, we've had it all today. I may not get warm again....not a great day for a bike ride..........

Love the Traveling Gnome......was too late to get in on that, sent a Gnome to Iraq with Desert Lawn.....then we started Cedric and Bailey....a traveling frog and his little dog....after leaving Laura and I they went to Farges France to visit Jim and went to the UN in Geneva and made Snowfrogs among other wonderful things! Now they are in Moosefactory, Ontario!!! It has been a lot of fun....if you want to check it out I hope this link will work.....http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/919181/

Eugene, OR

International Travelers!! What an adventure that must be. See Portland, I'm not the only one. I'll have to check that one out.

Willow..the fairies sound perfect.

Portland..this place is a 55+ manufactured home park (don't say mobile, they hate that). There are 99 units, we have one of the larger ones, on the corner at the end of a cul de sac. We all own our property and jointly own the acreage around us. I'm not sure of the total amount, but it completely surrounds us, more so in the back which is where my view is. There is lots of wooded area with walk paths, the Coast Fork of the Willamette runs across one corner and we have another piece of property across the river. We have our own well water system. A compost and burn area, a clubhouse and an indoor pool. We are out in the country, but close enough to town to be convenient. Everything is managed by volunteer and an elected board. We've really been happy here for the last 10 years. Things aren't always perfect, some people don't like rules no matter where they live. But for the most part I love it.

This is one of the paths.

You live in a beautiful area. Enjoyed your time with Lingernot.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Sally - you do live in a beautiful place. I like the idea of 55+. I imagine you have lots of friends living close by and it is so nice to be in the country but close to town. And how nice to have your Mother close by. Thanks for sharing that.

I envy the life of Cedric & Bailey!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I like the idea of 55+....this neighborhood was 55+ when my mom moved here 25 years ago...then it got to the point that a lot of retired people couldn't afford the rents, so we have a lot of younger people in the neighborhood now.....more teens and their friends....and things going on.....had the police down the street last summer....all of them!!!! Turned out the guy on the corner was dealing drugs, a couple were going to break in and rob him....someone was on the roof with a gun....all kinds of excitement!! Then last week someone went through every car on our street.......weird thing is that none of us can find anything missing.....CD's, expensive tools, all kinds of stuff...nothing missing but they sure made a mess of things looking for whatever! We are on a quiet dead end...still 80% Retirees....we have never had problems in the past.....never bothered to lock the cars, or even the house most of the time......as Bob said once upon a time.....The Times They Are a Changin'.....

I am rather envious of Cedric and Bailey too.....they get to visit lots of DG Friends and right now they are enjoying Caribou for dinner and really good looking ice cream for dessert in Moosefactory Ontario...reminds of the village where we lived in Alaska when I was a kid.

Eugene, OR

I still pinch myself now and then, just to be sure it's real. Dh doesn't really like the cold, but we didn't want to stay in CA and my parents needed help, then the people who owned this house decided to move a month before I retired. It just all fell into place like it was meant to be. Paid a little more than we intended, but what we have more than made up for it. Escpecially with mom next door (lost dad almost 4 yrs ago). It just makes it so easy for me to look after her.

Have to check out Cedric and Bailey, I've been feeling puny today. Trying not to catch a cold I think.

zhinusmom...hope they got all the druggies out of your neighborhood. You can do without that kind of excitement. We had to start locking up better too. We're gated but someone can still walk in. That's strange about the cars!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

It is interesting how things work out....my mom and dad moved into this duplex 25 years ago.....they loved the neighborhood. We lost dad in '92. About 9 years ago, just when we needed to move back into town the other half of mom's duplex became available....it is really nice being right next door...most of the time..! I love plants....if it was left to her there probably would not be a piece of plant life left in the yard! But we do a lot of crafts and things together and we have a good time. She just turned 80.
