What weird weather we're having #5

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/923041/

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I just remembered my LOTR's figurines came from Lincoln City, OR. My daughter lived in Newport and taught for 5 years in Siletz after graduating from WOSC.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

My DHs brother lives in Lincoln City. And we spent part of are Honeymoon in a cabin there. was fun.

Eugene, OR

Tilly....hope you're rested up from yesterday, body and soul.

♪We're having a heat wave♪ It got all the way to 66 deg. today, it was heaven. Didn't have to wear a big jacket when I went out.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree completely Sally, the weather was wonderful. I was soooo wishing that I didn't have to be at work today and could've been at home getting stuff done in the yard. Hmmpf.... Oh well. This weather also makes for a much more pleasant day at work when you work outside.

Zhinu, you weren't snoozing. I was thinking to myself, 'when it gets to 260, then I'll start a new one.' So, if you were snoozing, then we both were! :-p when there's not a lot of pictures, the threads load quite a bit faster I think.

Marcia, sorry to hear about your Buster (I think it was), that's always tough to deal with.

Small world Tilly and Willow! My mom's best friend and here family live in Lincoln City. We go over there fairly regularly as well as Newport, because it's 'on the way.' One of Sally and I's favorite little towns is between the two of them, that's Depot Bay.

Eugene, OR

Yep and I like Newport and Lincoln City too. My BIL used to park his RV in Lincoln City, so we went to visit lots. It's safe to say I just plain love Oregon, especially the coast. Haven't been to the eastern part yet.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I love Depot Bay also. On our last trip down the coast to visit DD before she moved back home, we video taped the trip all the way down the coast so she would always remember it. I miss visiting down there. We don't do trips anymore.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

We don't do the trips anymore ether. Work work takes it toll. LOL

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

As does old age ^_^

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

geeminy.... it was 30deg. cooler today! That was a bit of a shock. But, i guess that I couldn't expect that weather to hold out forever. :-p

I agree with everyone, the coast is a fun place to visit. It's beautiful, but ultimately I do think that I prefer to "just visit."

What a great idea to video tape it all Willow. Not only that, but you know Depot Bay as well. It always amazes me that it's so well known for being such a small town. It's funny, I would say that about 75% of the time when I'm there that I run into someone that I know.

Ahh, I prefer to think that i'm not going to let age deter me completely! I know that i'm a lot slower than I used to be... but I'll get there. My grandmother had the best attitude toward it I think. She always used to say, 'how will I know that I live in the best place there is for me to live until I've seen the others?' This coming from a gal who made a trip cross country and back when she was in her twenties with a girl friend of hers in 1938. They even went up to Niagra Falls in their trip. She went other places after that, but when she was in her 70's, she saved her money and went to Europe with a bunch of folks from the congregations. At that time she needed crutches to walk, but she said that she found it easier to get assistance from the attendants when they realized that she had crutches! Anyhow, that's my speal on it!

(Judi)Portland, OR

My parents, who are 92 and 85, flew home on Saturday. They need a little assistance through the airport but other than that they do fine. Travel has helped them to remain connected to the world. My Dad is a little freaky - he does the crossword puzzles from the NY Times in ink, and completes them in record time. I can usually get, maybe, a few words but he is a walking dictionary.

Red my sister was here for Thanksgiving and when she returned home to Oakridge it was really cold. Brrrrr

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Currently 47. Had a niced weekend with family for our turkey dinner. I brined it this year. Turned out great!
Anyway, in our local paper yesterday they had an article in the travel section about Mt. Bachelor over in Bend. I thought that was pretty cool, since I live in NJ. I immediately thought of you guys.
Jan

(Judi)Portland, OR

I have never brined a turkey but I want to try it. What kind of turkey did you use & what brine?

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I got a 16 lb. one and thawed it. I had a big insulated jug 5 gal. I went on line to find out how to brine. The site I used said to dissolve 2 cups of kosher salt in a little water on the stove. Then add 2 gal of water. I lined the jug with a trash bag. Put in the turkey neck end first and poured in the brine. I then put it in the frig. 8 hrs - 24 hrs. Before roasting I rinsed it and patted dry then roasted it as usual. For that size bird it was finished in 3 1/2 hrs. Sometimes I put it in a bag, but didn't this time. I am cleaning my oven this morning. LOL. It was very moist. Generally, I am pleased with the results, but maybe will try less time brining or a little less salt. It was the perfect size for the group, but hardly any leftovers. BOO-HOO. Everyone said it was great. Check on line. I got the idea to use the jug from one of the cooking shows - don't remember which one, though.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Beautiful Sunshine today!!!!!

We brined our turkey too....this is out second year and we love it.
Mom just had a standard grocery store turkey...Laura took my big ice chest and filled it about 2/3 with hot water and added salt until it would float an egg (2 boxes).........this year we added several branches of Rosemary, a few bunches of Sage and several sprigs of thyme and what ever herbs were still in the garden.......cooled it down with a few ice cubes and let the big guy swim overnight....... a friend of ours added some Cinnamon and clove the theirs and said it was really good! There are a lot of good recipes out there.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Sheesh!! I go catch up on a couple of threads and now it dark, cloudy and getting a few rain drops..........this isn't fun!

Neighbor gave me a Mallow she had her gardener dig up and said I should plant it right away......

DG friend on the East Coast sent me 4 Brug cuttings...have had them in water as instructed now they are getting huge roots so I have to get potting soil and pots and get them settled in the back room for the winter.

Have a Froggie Santa and some other Swaps to get shipped and a dozen other things I SHOULD be doing......but have a case of the "don't wanna's" today. Oh well. bbl.

A little bright spot still in the garden........

Love the yellow flowers. Love yellow! I've been having to push myself since Thanksgiving..don't wanna isn't getting it done. LOL Went to put up Christmas lights and found out when we got new siding this summer they took out all the nails I hang the lights on across the front of the house. Left the ones on the garage and across the deck thank goodness, I was not a happy camper. I try not to do ladders anymore, I'll see if I can get my neighbor to help.

It was dry all day, rained as soon as it was time for me to go to a meeting. At least it didn't rain too hard while I was driving. I think it got up to 60, good day for working outside.

rc....your grandmother sounds like my mom. She and Dad came to the west coast from Pennsylvania right after they got married, liked it and stayed. They were full timers in their motorhome for 15 years and traveled all over the west, took a couple of trips cross country and did ballroom dancing wherever they were. It's fun to listen to the stories.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Tricia...you have a forsythia blooming already? Or is that a winter Jasmine? Either way, it's early! I'm jealous! :-p

Your right Sally, your mom and my grandma do sound very similar! It's fun that way. Grandma had some very interesting stories, as I'm sure that you mom does. Sorry to hear about your nails being gone. Hopefully they'll be up soon.

Today was ok weather wise here. Sort of overcast and fairly cool. I'm waiting for tomorrow! it sounds nice.

Jan... How surprising about the article and Bend. Small world!! What sort of overview did they portray of us? Hopefully not some sort of wild, wild, west stuff with a skii lodge in the middle!

Eugene, OR

I always worry they think we're all hippies! LOL

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Yeah.... Or that too!!! I forgot about that one!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

No, it was tasfully done. They gave lift prices etc.
We are up to 39 already. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 50's. November has been below normal temp.-wise. Sometimes we can sit outside for Thanksgiving dinner.

Eugene, OR

10:00 am and it's 58 deg on my deck. If it stays like this I'll get the lights done today.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Hmmm - the reason I moved to Oregon was because I heard Oregonians were all hippies...........

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol.... there's many different degrees. In my family, they say that I'm the liberal one because I don't hunt and fish for my meals! I'm sure that some call me more than that because I have a lot of earrings, but they're all in my ears! I'm pretty much meaning the ones who live up in trees all the time and don't use toilet paper (that's not a joke--I know a few).

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

EWWWW!!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I agree! It's not quite a gross as it sounds, they use and recycle other stuff. But still........

I could never, ever, even imagine!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Shelly, it's Jasmine I got from my MIL. Glad to have it as it is the only spot of color I have right now in the back......my poor little fuchsia out front still has a ton of flowers on it...I really should bring it in....and the pineapple sage on the patio has gotten a few blooms....quite strange..........

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Those spots of color are definitely much needed now! Is your fuschia Hardy? The pineapple sage is definitely out of character right now. Hellebores way early, sages very late, rhody's blooming now.... things are definitely turned around!!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We had a friend traveling around the west coast with us in the early 70's.....lugged his hard cover I-Ching and Plant books around in his back pack.....always telling us this is good you can eat this or that for whatever.......so guess what the Genius used for TP one day????? Yep, Poison Ivy!!!!! Was not a happy camper for some time....and we, kind souls that we were, never let him forget it!!!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

lol.... that's great! And you shouldn't let him forget it, especially since he was giving you lectures on plants!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

No the Hardy seems to be done for the year. This is Diva, Cherry White Upright.....

(Judi)Portland, OR

If you're gonna save the trees by using less paper I'm sure there's a better way to do it! I've been known to take toilet paper when traveling to some foreign countries.
We are supposed to have a few dry days so time to rake up the last of the leaves.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Not going to touch that. LOL

Talk about Desavoo, I mentioned about my DHs bro living in Lincolin City. Well guess who showed up on my door step this morning. Him and his wife. And no word they were coming. I haven't seen him for over 2 years, He came up one summer with the other bro. And we where trying to remember the last time we saw her, had to have been 14 years ago we we went down there. They are going to be opening a new restaurant there. Not sure where yet, find out when we do dinner tomorrow night. Just blew my mind.

I try to recycle all I can, but I have my limits!! LOL I've read some things about the people redchic was talking about and there's more than a few.

It was a beautiful day today, no lights. Our committee (I live in an over 55 community) decided it was a perfect day for trimming some willow trees and overgrown bushes. Since I'm on the committee, guess what I was doing this afternoon? We have a small chipper, so we're chipping what was pruned to put on walk paths in the woods. Needless to say I'm tired tonight. We did get a lot accomplished though.

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Trica.... I love that fuschia. We need all the color that we can get right now!
Portland, I agree about the situation with TP in other countries. However, it really makes a person appreciate home that way.

Tilly.... that's awesome to hear that they stopped by! and for it to be such a surprise. What fun! You'll have to tell us all the name of it so that we can check it out when we go through. Hopefully it all works out for them. It's sort of worrisome given that other businesses aren't doing so good right now.

Limits are a good thing Sally! especially when it comes to sanitation!! Sorry to hear that you didn't get you lights up. But tomorrow is supposed to be nice, so there's hope. Hopefully it was well worth it and you're not sore!

I'm really looking forward to decent weather tomorrow. for one, kitty has to go back to the vet, the first diagnosis doesn't seem to be working. But, after that I hope to get around to cutting the rest of the trees that the powerline folks fell. The first time through, they cut the wood up into firewood size pieces.... but left it down by the river. It took a while for me to move all of that wood up to the top of the bank. To top it off, one day while I was at work, someone drove up this old rd (just a path now)and help themselves to two of my largest piles of wood. I was quite peeved. Especially since all they had to do was ask! I have more than enough. Anyhow, the powerline folks made a second trip through (I didn't know they were going to) and fell several more trees.... but didn't cut them up. Someone has already came by and taken the only cedar tree. So, I put signs and flagging all over the trees saying..... 'see the only house here??? this wood belongs to that house and you're on their property.' It does seem to have deterred folks, but I know not for long because it's always been obvious whose property they were on. However i'm hussling to try to get it cut up and moved over to the house! tomorrow should be a great day for it!

Eugene, OR

Sounds like a really big job!! Careful with all that cutting. We'll be back with the trimming tomorrow. We did get a lot done, but there's more to go yet. Depends on how many volunteers show up to get it done. When we get it all done, there will be a nice area for ducks to stop this winter and the heron always come in to feed. And since we've trimmed some of the trees, we'll actually be able to see it. The trees are all along the storm drain ditch and have gotten way out of hand, so we're trying to take care of that problem. Cleaned out culverts so the water will drain better, etc. Doubt if we can take care of the whole problem now, but making a good start.

Hope people stop helping themselves to your wood. Some people just don't seem to care if it belongs to someone else.

(Judi)Portland, OR

I saw a sign in a yard near Oakridge that said "You loot we shoot".

Eugene, OR

I Love It!!

Bend, OR(Zone 5a)

Wow! I haven't been on here for a couple of days and before you know it a new thread!
Sally, I have to agree!
Portland1, Maybe there should be more signs like that out there.
Susan

Eugene, OR

We just got a little carried away. Coming to the aid of redchic.

I'll try to remember to take a picture of the work we've done, hope I can find a before. It looks so nice, but we are all tired and the guys doing the chipping are getting beat up.

It was cold all day today, stayed around 46 all day, still is, but it felt colder. I went and bought a new pair of loppers today, everyone was laughing at my old ones. They were really old and I couldn't sharpen them anymore. Now I can cut with the best of them. Titanium blade no less!
