How can you 'tag' pages?

State of..., MA(Zone 6a)

I see you can tag items on DG but I can't figure out how you do that. I am also not sure exactly what you can tag. Can you tag an entire thread, or a single post on a thread? Can you tag multiple threads with the same tag? Can you then do a search for a tag that will bring up a list of everything tagged with that 'label'? It seems like it could be a useful function but not figuring out how to use it.

Thanks

On every page here, you'll see a little folder icon near the upper right corner--click that to tag that page. If you want to tag just a single post instead of a whole thread, you'll need to click on the "post # xxxx" link that shows up on every post underneath the poster's name/date/time. This will open up that post on a separate page which you can then tag. And yes, you can tag multiple things with the same tag. As far as searching, right now you can choose to either view only the things you've tagged, or else you can view tags that everyone's made. You can browse through the list, or if there's a particular word you're looking for, go to the list of all the tags and use the find function of your browser to look for that word (Edit menu--> find or hit Ctrl-F on your keyboard) To browse everyone's list, look in the navigation bar on the side of the page and you'll see a link that says tagged pages--that will bring up the list of all the tags. At the bottom of that page there's a link to view just the things that you've tagged. Or you can go to "my info" to view your member page, on there you'll see a link to view pages you've tagged, and from that page of your tags there's a link to view all tagged pages.

Here's a brief explanation:
http://davesgarden.com/tools/tags/add.php

You cannot really tag multiple threads with the same tag
but you can name them in a way that makes it is easier to
find them later.

What I do is add a category for myself when naming a
tag -- such as "Recipes: Mary's apple pie," or Computers:
How to..." or some such thing. Otherwise they get lost in
the cloud.

Ooops, Ecrane just cross posted with a far better explanation!

You can definitely use the same tag for multiple threads...tags are actually more useful if you do it that way since then clicking on a particular tag word will bring up a number of threads on the subject, to me that's much easier than having to dig through the cloud for 50 similar tag words each of which was used to tag one thread. Here's an example of multiple threads that were all tagged with the word "birds" http://davesgarden.com/tools/tags/tag.php?tag=birds That particular one might be a bit too general to be useful, but I think it shows the idea. For finding things that you tagged yourself, I'd recommend going to "my info" and viewing just your own tagged pages, that way you don't have to dig through the cloud to remember what you tagged.

Thank you all for the quick reply....I'll look this all over and I am sure I will be able to figure it out now!

I mainly just tag specific posts so naming them works best
for me. The challenge is remembering what I named things
which is why I categorize them. Then I can maneuver through
the cloud more easily than the list.

Happy Thanksgiving!
