I'm wondering what kinds of poppies any of you have grown sucessfully in Texas? Happy Thanksgiving! Y'all
Poppies in Texas
I like the yellow orange California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) Or maybe that is not considered an "official poppy" since it is not in the papaver genus. Anyway I love the bright color in the springtime. I planted some of the taller ones this fall. I can't wait to see how they will do in the spring.
Carol
Goodmorning everyone, When is the best time to plant seeds and plants from nurserys? I really like them but never had much luck with them. Jerry
Usually seeds are planted as the pkg says unless you know from personal experience something different. I try to plant flowers when the moon is coming up from new moon but that doesn't always work because of weather, etc. As far as plants are concerned you can't depend on the nurseries to have the right plants out at the right time. I just hate it when they try to sell you spring flowers at July 4 or some such. If you are familiar w/the plants you can use your own judgment or whatever the stake says or if you don't ask DG. If in doubt don't buy and save yourself some time and money.
Ann
ANN, Very true! Thanks. Jerry
I am about 50 W of FTW ( Millsap).. When shoyuld I plant Poppie seeds??

Kylie
I am 14 miles from downtown Dallas. I scattered my poppy seed, giant larkspur and hollyhock seed last week. These all should be planted in the fall. Did so last year and had a wonderful surprise in the spring as I had forgotten about it.
Sheila, do I have the poppy you show at the first post? I sure hope so.
Christi
This is May 1st , 08. $1.29 for a pkg of seed.
Thanks.. It is 68*F outside today .. Calling for Warm days and cooler nights should I refig. and put out later or go ahead and plant???.. Our Winters are so wierd..LOL
That is Beautiful...
K
Beautiful, Jo. Just came in and found a cat on the milkweed you brought. Still pretty small but I'm guessing it is a Monarch. Wooooweee. Now what?
Oh forgot, planted the sweet pea last week too.
The sooner you plant these seeds the better. Poppy is not really "planted". Just scratch the soil with a leaf rake and scatter, then water lightly for a day or two. It is sooo tiny it takes care of itself.
Well Christi, you could try raising that monarch or leave it to her own devices, they know what to do if they survive. Are you set up for raising it?
Thank you Kylie, they are beautiful indeed, but they don't call them prickly for nothing, you have to handle the plant very carefully.
Josephine.
Really???? I have never grown Poppies but once.. no clue what they were (Red)...I do have a handful of seed I will put out tomorrow say a little Prayer and look forward to Spring...LOL
Days till Spring!!
106 Days, 12 Hours, 56 Minutes
No. I have never attempted to raise butterflies before. The cup you brought is in the greenhouse with a ceramic heater going. Guess I will have to let nature take it's course.
Christi
That is probably the best thing to do at this point, maybe next spring we might get you into butterfly raising, it is a lot of fun.
Josephine.
I haven't seen any Monarchs for a while. It could be a Queen; they have been very active on nice days, saw two today. Do you have other Milkweed plants to be able to feed the cat Christi? If not, I will dig a couple of mine and take inside in case we get a freeze. How big is it now? Get a picture if you can.
Oh...just realized this is the poppy thread! Sorry.
Yes Christi, those are from the same seeds, but some will be hot pink.
ooooo Those are pretty!!!
Last Spring we had a Swallowtail hatch in the house it was very cool! We also had some Praying Mantis that hatched inside.. There was ALOT of them..LOL they were everywhere..
Kylie
Oh wow! I can hardly wait for spring and the poppy and giant larkspur to bloom. I have already "scattered" the various seed. Best part of all is that they will all reseed from now on. Need to start getting rid of all the grass in the backyard. Definitely don't have enough bed space for everything I have or want.
Will try to get a picture of the cat this afternoon. Saw it again this morning when I went to check on the new heater I put in last night. Everything was all warm and cozy. I have had swallotail cats often on the parsley and the rue.
Christi
Christi, look at the cat closely and see if it has two sets of feelers, if so it is a monarch, if it has tree sets it is a queen.
Josephine.
Oh how exciting!!!!!! Just looked and she/he has two sets. Just sat the milkweed with the cat down on the floor of the greenhouse closer to the heater....but not tooo close.
Josephine, just now looking at Dallas paper from this morning. Picture of Molly Hollar and an article about the Wildscape Park. Will save it for you.
Christi
Oh how neat, I hope it gets to be a butterfly for you, such a thrill.
Thank you for saving the paper, I would love to see it, she is such a nice person, works like crazy for that place, but it sure is worth it.
Josephine.
Is this not where you hang out?
Absolutely, I spend a lot of time there working. I also raise the plants for the wildscape.
When the weather is more amenable I am coming to your house and then to the Wildscape.
Christi
I would love to take you there, and also to the Fielder House butterfly garden.
Josephine.
Looking forward to it. Now that I can walk I'm ready to take on the world. hahaha
Great, you should go at least twice a year to experience the changes with the seasons.
Count me in for a cooler weather tour. It was very hot when I got to go to Fielder and MHW.
Allright, we will have to think and find a good time, maybe Deb can join us too.
Great, I would love to see it in the spring.
Put me on the list too! This time I will remember my camera.
Happy Days! A party in the brewing.
Christi
Very good, I can hardly wait !
We can make it a picnic like we did last time, that was a nice treat.
Yes, I like the idea too.
