shrimp plants
Tropical Garden # 24
Hello everybody!!! I hope the holidays were good for you!!! Y'all's pictures are great!!! They give me hope that this weather will soon be over. I had some damage from last weeks freeze. But I managed to save a few.
Thanks Rita I really like that look. I'm gonna have to go look it up.
Randy, it looks as though you have successfully populated the Texas gardens with brugs. From the ones you brought I now have blooming today, yellow ( has covered the bush) white, pink, peach. Your magic touch extends even to your sharing.
Thank you, thank you.
How are you doing LouC? Did you get over your back surgery?
I am better than new. It has been 3 1/2 months and am told there are no restrictions. Use common sense and listen to my body. First time in 5 years I have been free of pain. Finally back to my garden. How is your rehab from the hurricane going?
Christi
We have a birthday today???? Happy happy one Dutchlady, """FELIZ CUMPLEANOS""
Love to all today, raining and just awfull, hoping for better weather tomorrow!
That is so good that you are better than ever!!! Thank God for such Drs. that can work miracles like that!!!!
I think we're going below 32 tomorrow again. Hope I have time to cover my brugs, hibiscus and bromeliads.
LOL Clem we crossed posted. We had the rain yesterday.
It's cold and windy here today too. It's been pretty warm here for this time of year. Cold front blows in for a day or two, then it bounces back to warm again. It actually was so warm and humid on friday we had to switch on the airconditioner.
Going to be chilly tonight though.
Thank goodness Christi, I finally have reduced my brug population to something more manageable. And still, I have a few in the holding pattern. I most likely am going to have to work on the plumerias next.
Happy Birthday Dutchlady
Jeri 32 degrees, ouchie girl, well I have that here but I cannot believe you can get that over there and keep your green children outside, lol, yeah!
RJ, he he, keep reducing your brug population and send it all to NY, my house of course, lol!!!!!

Hey, Randy, because I was paranoid about losing the brugs, I cut above a "y" on each bush and just shoved into a pot in the greenhouse. They have all rooted I suppose because they are putting out leaves. YAY! Today I cut back Tequila Sunrise hibiscus, the duranta, and the clerodendrum ugandense, squirrell tail and shrimp plants and stuck them all into pots to root. The plumerias are already out of the pot and laying on the shelf. Tomorrow need to buy a heater for the greenhouse. The tool barn is so full you can't walk through it and the heater is already on low there. Need a really BIG greenhouse. When are you coming to visit?
PK
Here only days before we will have a frost/freeze is this a bloom forming on the banana?
No problem Clemen, well start the Brug Express!
Now Christi, how do you think I got so many brugs? uh huh...exactly what you did, stick cuttings in the dirt, and I tell ya they have a high success rate. Not to mention rapid growth. You'll be sending to Clemen !
I know, I'm asking myself when for visit too. My brother's been asking for too long, but..he has first hand experience getting bumped off of airplanes. After the Holidays my time is more flexible as I'll have vacation and floating holidays again.
Looking forward to it.
I am waiting here patiently, ha ha ha, amtrack coming my way full of Bruggies!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhh that would be a dream come true!
Happy Birthday Dutchlady. Hope you are having warm and sunny weather and all your plumerias are blooming.
I hope to have many brug cuttings to share next fall. I got a bunch of brug cuttings from a generous gardener and they are all rootings. I've only killed 2 - I don't remember which one it was, but I hope it's not a double.
It's been raining (and brrrr cold) here since Friday. Can't put the Xmas lights up outside. I think it will clear up tomorrow night, just in time for my daughter's class to go caroling.
Merry Christmas ya'll!
Lilli, Christmas tomorrow, lol, today it is still November, tomorrow, yes yes you can say it, lol!!! i have brug cuttings too and i have lost 5 so far, worse thing they were the doubles anb triples, so sad! Well I am lucky to keep the others alive, hopefuly they will make it through the winter!
Night night all! tomorrow another day, glad to know you are all friendly!
Clemen, I have lost more than I have "saved" (rooted).
Lou so I am not alone!!!!! Love the ones I have though, brugs are beautiful no matter if they are doubles, triples or whatever, I am glad i came to love them and collect them, now you know I am a crazy bruggie lover!!!!! YEAH nutty crazy, Gordon knows, right my friend in Brooklyn????
Would expect that even the most experienced have not had 100% rooting with whatever plant is their passion. My list is growing.
How many do you have??? I have about 20 or so, a little more or less and lossing them!
This is my first serious year with brugs. Have 14 in ground. Will see how they survive our winters. All are very large and mature, strong roots and large trunks. Trouble here is that we have 70 one day and 30 the next...wait a minute and it repeats. The plants never go fully dormant and try to continue to grow. All of one temp or the other is best.
I'll always send more if you need Clemen.
Here, I must carefully pick the prunned brugs off of the ground to prevent them from growing where dropped.
It's all climate.
Yes...Clemen.. whatever you'll admit to is a step tward recovery...
LouC.. well you can cavalearly say you'd like all cold for them... but below zero outside..Brugs inside...alive or dormant... is another ball game entirely....
I'm a founding member of the I Killed 100 plants this year. Club..
Be sure to order your club T-shirts... for all of the gardeners on your list.
Hey! Gordon. I haven't been following your other thread but how is that "greenhouse" you put up on the roof doing? Are the brugs surviving the cold weather there?
I was just in Brooklyn late this spring - May, visiting a cousin. Very nice neighborhood. I love the open market on Sunday! It was my first time in NY in a long time and my cousin was trying to tell me how to catch a cab when I came out of the airport. LOL! She ended up sending me a car instead.
Well.. LILI... the cool house is doing well... the lowest heater setting has it at about 50 most of the time... 45*-50* when it's warmer outside.. and below 32* outside it stays at about.. 38* inside.. a little warmer than what I'd like to see for adormant sleeping temperatures... it as47as a low there and 53 as a high .. over the last 24 hours.... and it says it's 92% humidity inside there right now....I get wireless. updates every 10 seconds or so to a display... near the computer area down here... although it has rained hard all day yesterday.. there were no leaks or drips inside.. and it's still sits right there.. . .so it's doing real great..
OH.. you'd have had no problem with a cab at the air port.. there are almost always some about there... and they have a dispatcher that will get you one .. keep the cabs in line.. and make sure that the cabbie has an idea as to where it is you're looking to go.. and the fare is displayed right on the meeter inside when you arrive... but having a car meet you is great... the drivers stand there by the exit with your name on a sign for you to see.. all you need to know is who you are... they already know where you are going...
May is a great time to be in NYC.. everything is blooming..come by for the roof tour if you're in town again... there's always something blooming up there..Welll ...starting in March/April with the spring displays.. and Blackberry winter.. [ blackberry winter is the last of the cold... about the time the blackberries/raspberries are blooming... kind of like a reverse IndianSummer ]
I love your roof top garden! I never tire of the virtual tours, and great vines!
Is the roof top vacant pretty much during the winter?
Rj
I took my little 2 year old nephew for a walk and enjoyed some beautiful gardens in Brooklyn. Wish I could have seen your rooftop. You have a fantastic view of New York!
I have read that some annonas can be adapted as potted plants and grown inside in colder months. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=annona&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
A cashew fruit in some English-speaking countries (including the US) is called a cashew apple. :)

Clemen, the seeds came today. Thank you very much. I love the surprise passion flower seeds, I will have to go look them up.
joegee, I have a guava tree about 6-7' tall, bearing fruits now for a few years. Hopefully, I can do the same with the anonas.
I am from Belize, I am very familiar with the cashew, we called it the cashew fruit. I do not like to eat the fruit but love the wine and the nuts.
