Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #19

Absolutely Beautiful!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

mygypsyrose that is the coolest thing! I need to try that, I have not had any luck trying to start cuttings. I've tried a bicolor butterfly bush that I love - it's my favorite and I want to have more. No luck on cuttings so far, and it is sterile so I can't try growing it from seed. Where do I get those special cups?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Gardengus, did that cedar land on your table there? looks like the legs are bowed :) Your land is beautiful! I wish my field looked like that but it's all weeds.

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

The table is one of the two piece kind . The ones that are also a bench, The wood part was in need of replacement anyway.

It's called the Rooter Pot from Leevalley.com http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=2&cat=2,47236&p=46938 .
I bought 5 of them last year. I plan to propagate a few of my shrubs next year. I'd be glad to put a couple on for you TCS.
Andrea

Edit to say,

I honestly just wounded them, put some rooting gel on and stuck them on there, watered them and forgot about them. Every once and a while I just checked to make sure there was some water in there. But that was about it. Real easy.

Do you think these would work for roses and Japanese maples? Did it take about 3 months?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

mygypsyrose, would mind putting a set on your order for me, you can let me know the shipping cost and I will mail you the money, I've been trying to get a cutting off of a red dogwood and I have no luck with those at all, I have such a rough time doing any cuttings this looks like the answer to my prayers lol Please :) I have root powder, and would send you some for yours if you want some :)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Those would work great for roses! I've had roses root where a cane was touching the ground, so that would be perfect.

Lea, have you ever tried layering? I have some plants I've never been able to root a cutting from, but have laid a branch on the ground, scratched a little wound in the stem to put rooting powder on, and secured it to the ground with a rock or wire hook. Works like a charm!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Neal :) The red dogwood is too tall to layer or I would try it.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Those stiff, upright plants are tough to do that way, the branches break before they touch the ground. A lot of roses are that way too.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I have a rose that I dug up twice and it still comes back lol It was a beautiful big lavender one then it turned red, the bloom is huge! I guess if it comes back this year I'll just put a trellis up it's a climber lol I have a lot of trouble with roses though they always get that black spot. I have the stuff to spray it with but that stuff is very determined lol Roses are too much trouble for me :)

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Lea, I only grow roses that don't need babying. There are several out there, just a matter of finding them. A good place to start is the Earthkind roses- cultivars that have been tested without the use of fertilizer and pesticides. I don't even look at Hybrid Teas any more- they're the ones that have really given roses a bad reputation for needing constant care.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Yep that was my first roses along with the climber but they never came back after I took them out, the tea roses were lavender too. I doubt if I buy any more roses for a while until I get my gardens half way where I want them anyway :) I would like to have some knock out roses eventually.

How's your weather today are you getting any snow, winds to 30 MH here and just spitting snow, wind chill is 15 :) We're lucky it 's not like some of them on here, poor Pamsue watching her pipes so they don't freeze! I couldn't imagine! I bet Suzy has a lot of snow right now.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Lea, I'm trying to get good at starting roses, so as I have luck with the toughest ones I'll send 'em your way :-) I've got double knockout and pink knockout I just planted this year. They're pretty vigorous, so I hope to be able to start some in '09. Free is the way to go for things you're questioning how well they'll do!

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I like that idea Neal but you need not go thru so much trouble for me lol I would have to find you something special :) I've heard people making comments on how hardy and vigorous knockout ones are that's why I thought I would try them :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I've got one (a red knockout rose) in my very exposed (north facing slope) front bed, at the bottom of the driveway where it doesn't even get much in the way of watering... and it still looks good after several years! I think I need to try propagating mine, too. :-)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Did they grow a lot after you first got your Knockouts Critter, that's what I was wondering how much they would spread and how fast. I'd just like to get different people's opinion on them :)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

OK -- it looks like Star is ready for a new thread, and this one is also getting a bit long for the 'dail-upers'
